Since Teacher Sweet was calling him out by his real name, Gu Mian couldn't very well keep playing dumb.
Just as he opened his mouth, about to say something like, "Not a chance. Eat shit!"
A bedroom door suddenly creaked open, interrupting the disrespectful words he was about to utter.
A head peeked out from behind it. It was the Fortune-teller.
Seeing the situation in the hall, the Fortune-teller was momentarily stunned.
I just found the card in my room to fill in my name, how did I come out to see something like this?
That Doctor and Teacher Sweet are standing in the middle of the hall, looking like they're about to fight at any moment. Since when did players get strong enough to beat up NPCs? Do they have a death wish?
"Ha... ha," she laughed awkwardly. "What are you two discussing?"
Teacher Sweet smiled at the Fortune-teller. "We're discussing my excellent employee who was abducted."
Abducted excellent employee? The Fortune-teller's mind blanked for a moment. She recognized all the words, but strung together, they made no sense to her.
And then, the Doctor uttered another perplexing statement—
"If you're that eager to see him, I can certainly try my best to arrange a reunion for you two."
Teacher Sweet: "..." She pressed her lips together, no longer wanting to speak.
Seeing Teacher Sweet fall silent, Gu Mian happily left the hall.
The Fortune-teller by the door looked in confusion at the suddenly quiet Teacher Sweet, then at Gu Mian's retreating figure, and decided to follow him.
Just as Gu Mian was stepping out the door, the person from behind caught up.
The Fortune-teller ran up to him, panting heavily. "Do you know that Teacher Sweet? You two seem quite familiar, don't you?"
That's impossible. How could a player know an NPC from an instance? she thought. Besides, isn't every instance reset after it's cleared?
Before Gu Mian could answer the Fortune-teller, he heard two male voices arguing about something behind him.
"The amusement park is nearby; I think we should go there to play."
"No, I think we should find a place to eat first."
"Amusement park first."
"Eat first."
The argument continued endlessly. Gu Mian turned to look. It was the two "selectable targets" following the Fortune-teller who were arguing.
Gu Mian looked surprised. "These people following you are quite lively."
So realistic, they can even start a fight?
The Fortune-teller chuckled. "Those two have fought at least three times since this started. It's hard to believe they might be ghosts."
Gu Mian fell into deep thought. Why are the four following me so lifeless? No one's even started a fight or anything...
Seemingly understanding that Gu Mian didn't want to discuss what just happened, the Fortune-teller smiled faintly. "The weather is lovely today..."
The weather in this instance was indeed very good.
After leaving the house, they could see a clear blue sky with large clouds drifting slowly. The sunlight shone down, and even the wind carried a hint of warmth.
"It's a perfect day for fortune-telling," the Fortune-teller said, her smile widening. "How about I read your fortune?"
Gu Mian hesitated.
Do all fortune-tellers have this kind of quirk? Just grabbing random people in an instance to tell their fortunes?
Sensing Gu Mian's thoughts, the Fortune-teller explained, "To tell you the truth, do you know about profession instances? Once you pass the trials of a profession instance, you're granted the corresponding profession. I was fortunate enough to obtain the Fortune-teller profession..."
Gu Mian stroked his chin. Speaking of profession instances, he was actually quite familiar with them.
He even remembered accidentally killing a Doctor in one such instance.
The Fortune-teller continued, "Because I only recently acquired this profession, I can only perform a divination once a day. So, I need to pick someone out of the ordinary to practice on. We can do it right here; it won't take up much time. Just consider it a little interlude in this instance."
"Why don't you do it for yourself?" Gu Mian asked.
The Fortune-teller held out a Crystal Ball about the size of an infant's head. "Profession restriction. I can't divine my own fate. And even when I divine for others, I can't predict specific events, only random outcomes."
So, you mean if I want to know about my luck in love, you might tell me I'm going to be hit by a car tomorrow instead?
Still, it wouldn't hurt to let this Fortune-teller try. Maybe she'll come up with some useful information.
So, Gu Mian agreed.
But not long after the divination began, he realized things weren't that simple...
"Hey..." The Fortune-teller, eyes still closed as she focused on the Crystal Ball before her, heard the Doctor opposite her suddenly call out the word.
She interrupted Gu Mian, "Don't make a sound. It will be over in just a moment."
Unexpectedly, the Doctor opposite her was still speaking, though this time his voice seemed a bit more distant. "It's not..."
The Fortune-teller frowned and emphasized again, "Please, no noise..."
But fate, it seemed, had other plans. Before she could finish speaking, a tremendous sound erupted right in front of them.
It was the sound of a powerful explosion.
The sound was so loud it even startled Teacher Sweet out of the house. She hurried to the doorway and saw a woman standing there, stunned. Shards of glass were scattered at the woman's feet. It seemed some glass object had just exploded.
Gu Mian was standing some distance away, and said with a complete lack of sincerity, "I did tell you to wait a moment. I didn't expect your Crystal Ball to have an explosive feature."
"Impossible!" The Fortune-teller shook her head vehemently, protesting, "The Crystal Ball absolutely does not have such a function!"
Gu Mian spread his hands. "It couldn't have exploded just because it didn't like the look of me, could it?"
After saying this, he showed no intention of lingering at the site of the explosion. "It's getting late. Since your Crystal Ball has exploded, I'll be on my way."
The four people following him were waiting nearby. Their expressions were no different from the Fortune-teller's; it seemed they had all witnessed the explosion. Seeing their faces, Gu Mian quickly walked over to them.
The Fortune-teller remained where she was, watching Gu Mian's figure recede into the distance until he disappeared from view.
"I've performed divinations for many people, but I've never encountered an explosion like this!"
"I must have really seen a ghost today!"
