Anna and Layla stood in front of the two endless night heretics tied to the chair. Their faces were all bloody and swollen. Their heads down as they had fainted from all the torture. Bren stood beside them with a knuckle on his hand, stained red, blood dropping down on the floor.
"Did he say anything?" Anna asked.
"Nothing lady Anna. They are the most tight-lipped bastards I've ever seen." Bren said helplessly, shaking his head.
"We'll have to try something else then." Layla said.
"There's only one way then lady Layla. We need a wizard who can extract memories." Bren said.
"But wizards like that are very rare. The wizards from the tower are quite haughty. They don't even meet outsiders." Anna said, clicking her tongue in annoyance.
Silence spread in the room. All three of them went into thought. Contemplating for solutions. Just then there was a knock on the door. The three of them were pulled back from their thoughts with the knock.
"Yes?"
"Lady Anna! It's me Liam."
"Oh! Yes, come in."
The door was pushed open by Fred when Liam entered with a chubby young man, clean shaved and short black hair following him.
"This is Palmer lady Anna. He is the shield mage I talked about." Liam introduced the chubby man behind him.
"So, you're palmer. Liam probably had already told you about it right? So, what are your thoughts? Would you like to join the team?" Anna asked.
"Y-Yes lady Anna. I'm honored that you considered me to be a part of your special team." Palmer bowed his head, nervous and tense.
A smile spread on Anna's face. "Liam sang a lot of praises for you Palmer. What I need are loyal and dutiful soldiers. Strength can be acquired anytime, but loyalty and honesty cannot." Anna said in a serious tone.
"Since Liam has vouched for you. I have nothing more to ask. Welcome to the team Palmer." Anna said with a smile.
"T-Thank you, lady Anna! I'll make sure not to disappoint you." Palmer was excited. He instantly saluted at her. Anna nodded and asked him to be at ease.
"The girls are ready too lady Anna. Would you like to talk with them now?" Liam asked.
"Yes! We'll go now." She then turned towards Bren. "Try to see if you can find the wizard. Try to contact the tower if possible. I hope someone agrees to help though."
"Yes, lady Anna." Bren bowed, accepting her orders.
"You need a wizards help?" Liam asked, confused.
Anna was a bit surprised at Liam suddenly asking about the wizard. She looked at Layla. Layla was a bit surprised too, but she then nodded and turned towards Liam.
"We need a wizard who knows the memory extraction spell. These two endless night bastards are not spilling anything." Layla said.
Liam's brows creased. He went silent for a second, thinking about something. After just a few seconds lifted his head up and looked at Layla and Anna as he started speaking.
"Is extracting the memory the only thing that is needed?"
"Well…yes. That will be enough." Layla said.
"I think I can help then." Liam said nonchalantly.
"WHAT!? Really?" Anna yelled out, surprised.
"Yes, lady Anna. I have a contracted beast that can help." Liam said.
Anna and Layla were stunned. Never once they had expected Liam to solve the greatest headache that they were in now.
"Go ahead then." Anna said, surprise and disbelief still apparent on her face.
Liam nodded and moved forward. Anna and Layla moved sideways, giving him the space. Liam waved his hands as mana started gathering in his hands. The strands of mana moved towards the floor. a runic circle appeared and from there a translucent blue slime came out.
The slime immediately jumped towards Liam right after coming out.
"Haha! alright Rimu. I missed you too." The slime cuddled Liam, not leaving his side.
"I need you to do something Rimu. Try to extract the memories from those two men tied to the chairs. It's very important. Can you do it?" Liam asked.
Rimu nodded enthusiastically, jumping up. He then moved towards the two heretics and positioned himself between them on the floor. Two slimy tentacles appeared from Rimu and moved towards the two of their heads.
The tentacles stuck to the center of the foreheads. Blue waves of energy moved from Rimu's body, passing through the tentacles towards the foreheads of the two heretics.
The energy waves kept on moving for a few minutes as all of them kept observing with berated breaths. Tension and nervousness rising with every minute.
Suddenly, the eyes of the two heretics opened abruptly. The eyes immediately rolled back and their body started shaking vigorously. A small runic circle appeared on their foreheads and their heads started glowing blazing hot.
"Move back!" Anna screamed and jumped forward. A mana shield appeared in front of her, protecting everyone behind her.
Just then the heads of the two heretics burst open. Blood and brain matter flying everywhere. Two headless corpses now sat there bound by the void cuffs.
Rimu retrieved its tentacles and turned around disappointed. Its head lowered as it slowly moved towards Liam.
"It's alright buddy. You tried your best." Liam patted Rimu, consoling him. he then turned towards Anna.
"I'm sorry lady Anna. I've disappointed you." Liam said with his head lowered in shame. He knew how important it was for Anna to get information out of those two heretics.
"It's alright Liam. You tried your best. It's my fault for underestimating them again." Anna said, gritting her teeth in anger and frustration.
Silence spread in the room. No one was saying anything. It was the first time they had caught those heretics alive, but now, even that had become useless.
Just then a tentacle appeared from Rimu and moved towards Liam's forehead. he was a bit surprised but didn't reject Rimu. The tentacle stuck to his forehead as the blue energy waves emitted from Rimu's body again, moving towards Liam.
Liam closed his eyes and for a few seconds the energy waves kept coming towards him. Finally, the waves stopped, Rimu removed his tentacle and took it back inside him.
Liam slowly opened his eyes, his face excited as a smile spread on his face. "Good boy Rimu!" He patted Rimu, praising him excitedly.
"It was not all useless lady Anna. Rimu extracted a small part of their memories. I think this is a vital information." Liam said.
Color returned to Anna and Layla's face. "What did he find?" She asked, hope reignited in her eyes again.
"He couldn't find anything about their main headquarters or top echelons, but what he got is that, the endless night heretics are planning something in Silverpeak. They have hidden bases in the mountains and planning something big." Liam said.
"Silverpeak?" Anna was a bit confused with the name. she was trying to recall when Palmer spoke.
"It's a city in the Muguvelen kingdom Lady Anna. Near the mountains separating the empire from the barbarian lands."
"But what will they accomplish there? The Muguvelen is just a mining kingdom. They don't even have much military strength." Layla asked skeptical.
"Whatever it is they are planning. Its definitely not anything good." Anna mumbled under her breath. "Is there anything more that you found Liam?" Anna asked.
"There is nothing more lady Anna. Just that they are using the natural minerals found there and making something out of it probably. It's not clear though." Liam said.
"I see. We have to move there immediately then. Or else it will be too late." Anna said in a urgent tone.
"You can't lady Anna. The regelak and Muguvelen don't have a good relation. Moving there without the king's permission can lead to devastating conditions. You'll need a referral from the Duke first, then the king has to approve it. Only then you will be considered a delegation and not put in the prison for trespassing." Bren said hurriedly. Trying to stop her before taking any rash decision.
"But it will be too late by then. We don't know from when these heretics are planning this in Silverpeak. Many innocent lives will be lost just like in Frostbane if we keep waiting for approvals!" Anna yelled out in frustration.
"Still, I can't allow that Lady Anna. I'm here to protect you, I can't let any harm come to you. It's my duty as your personal guard." Bren said firmly.
"Uncle Drake is here sister. We can ask him about this. If he talks to father, it would probably be faster." Layla said.
"Do you think he'll help us though! When two kingdoms are involved, the matter becomes serious. And even he can't speak for us in front of father. You know how he is." Anna said in annoyance.
"What's the harm in trying though? At least we can find other ways if he refuses." Layla said.
Anna went into thought. After a few seconds she nodded. "Alright then. Let's talk with him."
