Apocalypse: Last Traveler

Chapter 222: Transport and Artwork

It rained the next day, but it was just a light drizzle. Even though the sky was overcast, the temperature wasn't low.

Such weather was perfect for sleeping in. Lu Xi'an listened to the soft "pitter-patter" of rain falling on the car roof and couldn't resist lingering in bed a little longer.

Yao Wei also slept a bit more.

After waking up, the two took turns freshening up in the bathroom before setting off in the car.

Upon arriving outside Fengcheng County, the white cloth hanging high had been battered against the buildings by the rain, looking even more tattered compared to before.

Perhaps it was because all the people in the city had been killed by Luo Ping, and now there was no one left to tidy up.

But the two were unsure about this, so they didn't enter the city.

What if there were other people in the city again?

After passing through Fengcheng County, and bypassing Gaojiazhuang Village, they traveled for half a day and finally reached Tan Village.

After confirming through the Resonant Gene Scanner that there were no Neo-Humans, Lu Xi'an had the mechanical dog control the drone to take off, patrolling the surroundings above the RV.

This brand new drone was equipped with cannon barrels and a small energy receiving device.

However, because it didn't fully use Dyson Sphere materials, the drone's strength was insufficient. This energy receiving device was different from that on the mechanical dog and couldn't directly receive Dyson Sphere energy beams. Instead, it used Gou as a bridge, receiving only the energy dissipated from the mechanical dog after attenuation.

In other words, the drone could only fly if Gou was nearby. Without Gou, the drone was merely a decoration.

On the drone, there were two cannon barrels that could directly compress Dyson Sphere energy into high-pressure energy beams and fire them to cause destruction.

The most sturdy parts of the drone, capable of withstanding highly compressed energy beams, were these two cannon barrels and their related components.

So long as Gou was present, the drone could fire infinitely.

As long as there were no Neo-Humans nearby, or even no Type A Neo-Humans, this drone could handle all situations without Yao Wei needing to stand on the car roof.

Relying on the new version of ground-air coordination, Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei drove through Tan Village's roads without encountering any living people or danger.

Upon arrival at Tan Village, Lu Xi'an got out of the car to look behind the building and found it still in its original state. They had removed the wall bricks, so they could hide the car inside.

After inspecting it, they were certain that no one had been here since they left, and it was still safe.

Nevertheless, they moved the car behind the building and together carried it inside, using bricks to hide it properly.

Once they finished, they dusted off their hands and planned to open the entrance to the Tan Village Shelter.

Just then, Lu Xi'an glanced around and suddenly noticed a patch of land overgrown with weeds, much more lush than other areas.

Lu Xi'an was startled and pointed in that direction, asking, "Look over there, is that the place where we buried the trash before?"

Yao Wei followed Lu Xi'an's direction, recognized it, and nodded, "Yeah."

Curious, they walked over and found that the place where they'd buried trash was indeed much more overgrown compared to other areas, with a clear distinction.

Lu Xi'an patted his forehead, realizing, "The trash we buried before was all decaying food, apparently nourishing the land.

"Now, this patch has been fertilized by us, and the grass growing on it is better than elsewhere."

"I see..."

Yao Wei nodded and asked, "Is this the same principle as Shu's idea of using manure to fertilize the land?"

Lu Xi'an said, "I'm not sure either, probably similar. I'm not an expert in this area; it's best to ask Shu about these technicalities."

He couldn't help but feel sentimental, realizing that their unintended actions had resulted in such an outcome.

He initially thought he would walk alone in this world and eventually leave alone, waving goodbye without leaving a trace.

But now it seemed he was wrong.

How could one exist in a world without leaving some mark? Every action and consequence, in this desolate world, painted an unintentional picture.

"Let's go gather supplies."

With that, Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei turned to leave, heading to the collapsed entrance of the shelter, where they found the stone he had loosened before. They opened it, and Lu Xi'an, Yao Wei, and the mechanical dog went inside, closing it behind them.

The mechanical dog turned on its lights for illumination, leading Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei down the stairs, through the corridor, into the interior of the shelter.

Everything here was still exactly the same as when they left, without any change.

Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei took a look at the room where they had slept, feeling nostalgic.

Revisiting familiar places always stirs sentiments.

But now standing here, neither Lu Xi'an nor Yao Wei felt inclined to stay for another night.

Compared to their brand-new RV, the conditions here were notably lacking.

After pausing for a brief moment, they turned to leave, heading to the kitchen, opening the storeroom, and hauling out sacks of rice, and boxes containing sausages, salt, sugar, and dehydrated vegetables, making several trips to move everything to the shelter's exit.

Soy sauce, cooking oil, and vinegar were transferred over as well.

Next, Yao Wei planned to push open the shelter's stone to exit, but Lu Xi'an suddenly remembered something and said, "Wait, let me grab a few more things."

He turned to go, and Yao Wei followed, asking, "What are you getting?"

She didn't think there was anything left in the shelter of value, everything worth taking had been taken.

Lu Xi'an smiled slightly and sold a mystery, saying, "You'll find out later."

Yao Wei had to suppress her curiosity for the time being and followed Lu Xi'an inside the shelter. There, she saw Lu Xi'an go into each dormitory and take all the bed sheets.

"What are you going to do with these?"

She asked again.

But Lu Xi'an continued to be mysterious, "You'll know in a bit."

After selling his secret, he seemed to remember something and said to Yao Wei, "Go and get two quilts, ones with inner linings, more comfortable to cover.

"The space in our previous car was small, so it wasn't suitable to carry quilts. Now the space is sufficient, and having quilts is better, much more comfortable than bed sheets."

"Alright."

Yao Wei nodded but only returned with one after entering the room.

When Lu Xi'an asked why she only took one, she said, "We'll be holding Fungus Stone together at night, two quilts would be inconvenient."

That's great!

Two people sharing a quilt was exactly what Lu Xi'an hoped for.

"Then take another one. If this one gets damaged, we'll have a spare."

Lu Xi'an added.

Only then did Yao Wei fetch another quilt out.

After gathering enough things, they had Gou lead the way with lighting, returning to the entrance.

Once outside, they dismantled the brick wall at the back of the house, first placing the quilts and sheets in the car before pulling out the car.

Then they started loading goods.

The boxes were loaded into the RV by the two of them, lined up along the edge of the sofa in a row, then piled up, both on the sofa and the boxes, tied securely with a rope.

As a result, the sofa was temporarily unusable, but that was okay, they still had the bed.

The remaining one or two boxes were squeezed into the front storage compartment with a few bags of rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, and sugar.

The storage compartment was large enough to fit quite a few things.

This way, the only things not loaded onto the car were a few bags of rice and millet. The plastic greenhouse sheeting, salvaged earlier from an abandoned greenhouse outside Yao County in Pingchuan City, came in handy.

The two stacked these bags of rice and millet on top of the car, covered them with the waterproof high-tech plastic sheeting, and secured them with the remaining ropes. This way, everything was on the car and protected from the wind and rain.

"Mission accomplished!"

Lu Xi'an clapped his hands and said.

But Yao Wei frowned slightly at the sight of their brand new car turned into a cluttered storage room, somewhat dissatisfied.

"No longer new..."

She mumbled.

However, she only grumbled a bit; she knew how to choose between keeping the car looking new and keeping their supplies always ready.

"Is it time to deal with those bed sheets now?"

Yao Wei still had those bed sheets Lu Xi'an had taken last on her mind and asked Lu Xi'an.

Lu Xi'an smiled, "Of course." He had Yao Wei get on the car, but instead of dealing with the bed sheets first, he rummaged in his backpack for a while.

Soon, he retrieved two items, which Yao Wei saw were a needle and a large spool of thread.

Lu Xi'an laughed, "I found these in a tailor shop before. I even made a satchel for Gou, which I later gave to Chai Xin.

"Stand here and don't move, I'll make you a piece of clothing."

As he spoke, he got to work, found scissors, and started cutting the sheets, then threading the needle, occasionally looking at Yao Wei and then looking down to thread the needle again.

It's surprising that after the physical improvements of Type A Neo-Humans, even his ability to eyeball, cut, and sew significantly improved.

He didn't even need a ruler to measure and tailor. With a rough estimate, he could just manage to sew the clothes.

— Though the sewing was not all that visually appealing.

After a while, a crude top was completed. Lu Xi'an handed it to Yao Wei, saying, "Here, see if it fits."

The top made from the sheet was short-sleeved, somewhat loose, with a definite homey, casual vibe.

Yao Wei took it, frowned, and said, "This kind of material isn't very durable, is it? In case of any mishaps, it could tear easily."

Lu Xi'an smiled, "This is not for you to wear outside; it's sleepwear. This sheet is quite comfy against the skin. Made into sleepwear, it'll be comfortable to wear at night."

"Oh."

Only then did Yao Wei nod, comparing it against herself, saying, "Feels alright."

Lu Xi'an said, "Great, then I'll start making the pants. Do you want shorts or long pants? Also, if you prefer short sleeves, you can cut the sleeves off this shirt."
