Apocalypse: Last Traveler

Chapter 233: Egg Fried Rice

"Boom rumble rumble!"

The sound came from ahead, and both Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei looked forward through the windshield to see a large mudslide suddenly falling from the mountain not far ahead, mixed with grass, soil, and stones, roaring like a flash flood.

Landslide?!

"Attention, landslide occurring ahead, spreading trend observed, please exit this section promptly."

The RV's speakers emitted the electronic synthesized voice alert of the robotic dog.

"I can see that without you telling me!"

Lu Xi'an watched the mudflow spreading little by little, not daring to hesitate for even a moment, and immediately made up his mind.

"Yao Wei, lift the car and turn around!"

He hurriedly said to Yao Wei and then opened the car door and jumped out.

Upon hearing Lu Xi'an's words, Yao Wei also got out of the car without saying a word.

The mountain road was narrow, maneuvering the steering wheel and shifting gears to turn around was slower than doing it manually.

Fortunately, both of them were Type A Neo-Humans, nourished by Fungus Stone over a long period and trained daily according to a manual, making great strides in their physical qualities.

Otherwise, facing an RV that far exceeded the weight of Yao Wei's car, they would have been at a loss.

The two worked in perfect harmony, getting out of the car quickly, one moving forward, the other back, each lifting the car from the front and back, swiftly changing directions, and then putting the car down.

"Boom rumble rumble—"

The landslide extended outward again.

After putting the car down, they dared not pause for a second, quickly got back into the car, shifted gears, and sped away before the landslide caught up.

The muddy, uneven road couldn't stop the RV's speed. The tires alternately landed and lifted as they rotated rapidly, nearly bouncing the Resonant Gene Scanner inside the RV.

Yao Wei had to leap to the back, hugging the laptop and holding down the Resonant Gene Scanner on the table to prevent these two precious items from falling and breaking.

The RV raced, with vibrations trailing behind. While Lu Xi'an floored the accelerator, he glanced back through the rearview mirror and saw the mudflow had submerged a large section of road, blocking the way, and continued to widen.

Luckily, as they sped away, the speed of the "riverbed" widening behind them gradually slowed and then stagnated.

They finally escaped the landslide, and the robotic dog even broadcasted that within the mudflow submerging the road, there were several life forms washed away to death.

Lu Xi'an guessed those life forms were probably animals; if they were washed to death directly, it saved the trouble of hunting them, and they could easily be cooked and eaten.

But Lu Xi'an didn't dare to stop the car.

It was still raining outside, and without the "boom rumble rumble" landslide noise, the "pitter-patter" of rain on the roof was amplified.

Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei weren't sure if the rain would trigger a second landslide, feeling it was very unsafe to keep driving at the foot of the mountain.

The car wasn't worth risking for a few animal carcasses.

So they'd rather not have that bit of meat.

After driving out of the mountain path and away from Qin Mountain, they finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Lu Xi'an stopped the car and glanced in the rearview mirror, still feeling a bit uneasy.

The mudflow from the mountain had formed a large slope on the road that he could see from here. If the car had been submerged, it would be tough to dig it out.

"Luckily, we're both Type A Neo-Humans."

Lu Xi'an exclaimed.

And Yao Wei, in the back of the RV, nodded and said "Mm," expressing her agreement.

Feeling worried, she opened the refrigerator to look inside.

Seeing this, Lu Xi'an asked, "How is it?" The refrigerator contained eggs, the fast driving just now and the bumpy road made the car feel like it was flying; he wondered how many eggs had survived.

Anticipating the worst, he didn't expect Yao Wei to reply, "Some are broken, but most are fine."

"They're okay?!"

Lu Xi'an was quite surprised.

"Mm."

Yao Wei said, "The rack Shu made is excellent; it secured most of the eggs, only a few fell out."

As she spoke, she removed the rack and wiped it clean.

Lu Xi'an glanced in the rearview mirror, seeing the broken eggs securely held in place, mostly only half-broken, with some egg liquid spilled and some still in the shell.

He immediately said, "You just clean up the spilled egg liquid, and we'll stop to make some food with those broken eggs later."

"Mm."

Yao Wei responded again, then asked, "Egg fried rice?"

This was the delicacy Lu Xi'an mentioned many times, and Yao Wei longed for it — anyway, she believed that whatever Lu Xi'an repeatedly mentioned must be a delicacy.

"Okay, egg fried rice it is."

Lu Xi'an glanced at Yao Wei in the rearview mirror and promptly agreed.

Originally intending to make a simple rice dish by steaming rice, topping it with dehydrated vegetables and sausages, pouring egg liquid in between, sprinkling some soy sauce, and steaming it to make it delicious. He hadn't expected Yao Wei to suddenly bring up egg fried rice.

But since Yao Wei wanted egg fried rice, why not fulfill her wish? It's just another step, cooking the rice first and then frying it, no big deal.

After responding, Lu Xi'an glanced at Yao Wei again through the rearview mirror, seeing her eyebrows revealing faint joy and anticipation, he couldn't help but smile.

What's the harm in adding an extra step if it makes Yao Wei happy?

Driving back the same road, at the intersection, Lu Xi'an turned the car west again, drove past to the west side of the gas station, and parked the car off the road.

He used this abandoned, oil-less gas station to block Tunshan Village's view, then turned off the engine and jumped into the back of the car.

"How should we do it?"

Yao Wei asked. Her face remained calm, betraying little anticipation, but Lu Xi'an, knowing her for so long, understood her reserved emotions.

At this moment, she must have been looking forward to it very much.

Lu Xi'an knew it well.

"Let's cook the rice first."

Lu Xi'an said as he took out Yao Wei's pot, pouring in the rice.

The previous bag of rice, which they had been eating until now, was finally used up. As they poured out the last of it, the empty bag was folded up by Yao Wei and tucked neatly in a corner, pondering what it might be used for in the future.

Meanwhile, Lu Xi'an filled the pot with water and started cooking the rice.

With more than one induction cooker available, Lu Xi'an waited for a bit, and once he felt the rice was nearly cooked, he began preparing other things.

He took out Yao Wei's bowl and chopsticks, gathered the broken eggs, cracked them into the bowl, and picked out any bits of eggshell with chopsticks before starting to stir quickly.

At this time, Yao Wei watched quietly from the side, seeing the egg whites and yolks blend into a sticky swirl under the movement of the chopsticks, looking delicious.

But seeing Lu Xi'an like this, it was only the beginning. Who knows how delicious it would be once finished?

He placed the pan on the induction cooker, turned it on, added some oil after the pan heated, and then poured in Yao Wei's bowl of egg mixture.

"Sizzle—"

The eggs bubbled, solidified, and expanded, and Lu Xi'an stir-fried and broke them into irregular scrambled eggs with chopsticks.

Fluffy and soft, with a light yellow hue, they looked appetizing and made one want to gulp.

Lu Xi'an scooped out the scrambled eggs, glanced at Yao Wei, picked a piece with chopsticks, and held it up to Yao Wei's lips, saying, "Here, try it."

Yao Wei opened her mouth, allowing Lu Xi'an to put the chopsticks in, only pulling them out after she bit down.

The soft and fluffy eggs, with a bit of spring to them, infused her mouth with a gentle egg aroma mingled with the scent of oil, spreading throughout her oral cavity.

"Is it good?"

Lu Xi'an asked.

"Mm."

Yao Wei nodded. The egg had been swallowed, but the lingering aroma left her savoring it.

"You try it too."

Seeing that Lu Xi'an hadn't eaten, she said. Delicious food is not meant to be enjoyed alone; she liked Lu Xi'an eating with her.

But Lu Xi'an only shook his head, saying, "I'll fry it into the rice later."

Yao Wei frowned, snatched the chopsticks from Lu Xi'an's hand swiftly, picked up a piece of egg, and held it up to Lu Xi'an's lips, staring at him intently without a word.

Lu Xi'an, helpless, had to open his mouth, letting Yao Wei feed him the egg.

"Is it good?"

Yao Wei asked.

"It's good."

Lu Xi'an smiled wryly, saying, "You fed it to me, how could it not be good?"

The eggs were undoubtedly delicious. When making egg fried rice before, he liked to fry an extra egg, stealing a few bites before mixing it into the rice.

Light and soft, a unique delicacy.

But being fed by Yao Wei now, it felt completely different.

"Eggs are delicious by themselves."

Yao Wei said.

Lu Xi'an laughed, "True, but it's even better when you feed them to me."

Yao Wei: "..."

She was at a loss for words again.

After a while, the rice was done steaming. Lu Xi'an proceeded to heat the pan, add oil, stir-fry the rice, pour in the scrambled eggs, continue stir-frying, and finally add some seasoning.

Without green onions, ginger, or garlic, he had to skip these, but upon finishing, it didn't seem to affect the flavor much.

He served Yao Wei a full bowl of rice and ate directly from the pan himself.

With more left in the pan, Yao Wei soon finished her bowl and began eyeing the pan. Lu Xi'an laughed and said, "You might as well not bother with a bowl, just eat from the pan with me."

"Mm."

Yao Wei answered, sitting down by the pan with Lu Xi'an, eating one bite at a time together, thoroughly enjoying their egg fried rice.

"Pitter-patter—"

The light rain continued to tap on the car roof, sounding almost flirtatious.

Listening to the rain, Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei felt their meal was even more comforting.
