Special Forces Medic

Chapter 389: A One-Person Show

In the tranquility of dawn, ambulances blared their sirens as they flooded into the hospital gates. Xiao Lin was the first to hear the alarm before the vehicles appeared at the entrance: "Grab the tools and come with me."

"Why?" Xiao Ning was bewildered by Xiao Lin's sudden command. There were no patients to treat, so why the need for tools?

"Something happened!" Saying this, Xiao Lin grabbed the work coat from the chair back, briskly walking and running along the corridor, while Xiao Ning followed with the special medical kit. Although their department had someone more handsome than a star, his temper was also impressively sharp.

Xiao Lin was the first to arrive at the hospital entrance, while Yu Zhengbo rushed down from the dean's office after receiving a call, along with doctors from other departments arriving in succession.

After the emergency ambulance parked, several paramedics leapt from it, lifting the injured onto the stretcher.

"What's the issue?" Xiao Lin glanced at the patient on the stretcher, one hand feeling the patient's neck to check their pulse.

"Traffic accident, a truck's brakes failed on the highway causing a rear-end collision, and the following vehicles couldn't avoid it, leading to a chain collision." Subsequently, paramedics from several vehicles jumped down, sending the patients into the emergency room.

Xiao Lin followed inside, with Xiao Ning puzzledly staring at Xiao Lin's back. How did he know something happened? The dean met her in the corridor and told them to prepare the emergency department, yet Xiao Lin had already run out before the dean arrived. Could the dashing doctor be inhuman, oh oh oh! Xiao Ning shouted internally, imagining all sorts of strange possibilities about Xiao Lin.

Putting on special gloves, he approached a severely comatose patient, using scissors to cut open the already tattered clothes. The entire body seemed to have no intact place. A steel rod pierced into the left lower abdomen, fingers pinching the leg bone, with a light, fluid sensation on the surface, possibly a comminuted fracture that hadn't yet pierced the skin.

He lifted the patient's eyelids, shining a flashlight to see the pupils still had some reaction to the light source.

"Prepare the operating room, there's a chance to save this person."

"Little Xiao, with so many patients, what do you suggest we do? Dr. Li has family matters." Yu Zhengbo was overwhelmed; it was a weekend, and the school hospital had no doctors on duty.

"I need an anesthesiologist, is there an intern staying at school?" Xiao Lin glanced at the person lying there. Truthfully, it was somewhat challenging to handle alone: "I need help, please call Xia Xue, she's an emergency room doctor with a lot of experience." With that, Xiao Lin ignored Yu Zhengbo, leaving him to decide if he'll contact Xia Xue. Now, every second mattered to him.

The previous patient had been sent to the operating room, where an intern from the anesthesiology department, facing such a scene for the first time, was trembling with no sense of direction.

"Full anesthesia, calculate the dosage based on this person's weight and height, got it?" Xiao Lin, wearing a mask, stared at the intern who nodded in response.

"Alright, ten minutes of preparation time."

Xiao Lin turned and ran out of the operating room towards the emergency room on the first floor. Xiao Ning was already giving each patient basic emergency care. Seeing Xiao Lin, she waved him over: "Dr. Xiao, come take a look at this one."

By Xiao Ning's side was a pregnant woman, with a large belly, seemingly seven or eight months along. From the bloody fluid flowing from her lower body, it might be amniotic fluid rupture.

"Get an obstetrician! She's going into labor." Xiao Lin felt the pregnant woman's pulse, noting her labored breathing. He elevated her head and swiftly pressed two vital acupoints on her chest to prevent blood and air blockage in the respiratory tract: "Done, send her to the obstetrics department."

Xiao Lin glanced at the clock on the wall and quickly tended the ruptures of the other patients, directing them to appropriate departments for further treatment based on their conditions.

"Wait here for Dr. Xia, leave for the operating room when she arrives." Xiao Lin entered the room at the last minute, and the intern looked less nervous. Xiao Lin nodded at him, while the assistant doctor hesitated whether to pull out the steel rod embedded in the patient's abdomen. Leaving it inside could prevent massive blood loss.

"What blood type?"

"Type A! Do we have any reserves in the blood bank?" Xiao Lin asked the assistant doctor, feeling an impulse to lash out due to his slow response: "What are you doing standing there? Go find it!" Despite wearing a mask, his anger couldn't be adequately conveyed, yet his presence compelled action outside the operating room.

"Observe and inject doses every fifteen minutes!" Xiao Lin instructed the anesthesiologist, who took a deep breath and nodded.

"When I pull out the steel rod, press the wound immediately, understood?" Damn it, what a day, all intern-staffed. Xiao Lin gripped one end of the steel rod; the patient's heartbeat and blood pressure were alarmingly low: "Begin!"

The intern standing nearby hadn't yet caught Xiao Lin's technique when the steel rod was pulled out and set aside. "Quick, press it!" A loud shout from above brought the intern to press down on the wound with both hands promptly. Xiao Lin rapidly stimulated several acupoints on the patient, sealing capillary openings where blood seepage began to subside.

"What are you staring at? Clean the bloodstains off the wound!" Xiao Lin felt on the edge of madness, seeing the intern shake, and irritably snatched the tools from his hands to clean the patient's wound himself.

"Out, everyone but the anesthesiologist, leave."

The wound is about ten centimeters in diameter. Although the two main blood vessels were sealed off, blood still oozed out. "Dr. Xiao...Dr. Xiao, blood!" The intern who went to get the plasma ran in, took a look at Xiao Lin, and instinctively started the task that needed to be done.

"Scalpel number 13!" Xiao Lin didn't look at him, taking the scalpel and making an incision on the patient's abdomen. "Open it up!"

"Yes!" After finding the tool, he spread open the incised area. Under the magnifying glass, Xiao Lin carefully examined the internal organs bit by bit.

"Queasy with blood?" Xiao Lin glanced at the useful intern from the corner of his eye.

"A little!"

"Watching more will help you get over it." The steel rod pierced through the skin, half of the kidney was done for, but fortunately, it was inserted at an angle into the abdomen and did not injure other internal organs.

"Dr. Xiao, Dr. Xia has arrived. Should I let her in?"

"Let her in." Dressed in surgical attire, Xia Xue took the tool from the intern's hand; she glanced at Xiao Lin, while Xiao Ning helped her put on the magnifier.

"The steel rod penetrated the skin, with a tear at the lower part of the stomach, but did not damage the lungs or gallbladder. We will resect a small section of the stomach, repair the skin, and close the wound." Xiao Lin looked at Xia Xue. "Understand?"

"Xiao Ning, watch the patient's blood pressure and heartbeat and prepare to administer drugs if needed." Xia Xue instructed Xiao Ning nearby, while Xiao Lin had already skillfully begun each surgical step with precision using his scalpel.

Swabs to stop bleeding were changed piece by piece. At each incision, subcutaneous tissue fat and muscle were cut, with the internal organs gradually coming into view.

"Do you see a tumor here?" Xiao Lin pointed to the epithelial cells on the gastric mucosal surface.

Xia Xue focused on the area Xiao Lin indicated. There was a small polyp on the mucosa. "Directly excise it?"

"Yes, take it out along the way!" The casual tone frightened the intern beside them.

"There's not enough plasma, go get some more." Xia Xue clamped both ends with a curved hemostat, while Xiao Lin made a precise incision to remove the target area.

"Now close the wound!" Xia Xue lifted the edges again, allowing Xiao Lin to sew the wound perfectly.

"Very precise work!" Xiao Lin winked at Xia Xue, a form of praise.

"Hurry, his blood pressure is dropping; this is not a good sign." Xia Xue reminded Xiao Lin.

"Forty-five minutes!" As if making a declaration, Xiao Lin's gaze was fixed on the open abdomen. He stopped talking; the silent operating room was filled with a tense atmosphere.

When Xiao Lin says forty-five minutes, it certainly won't be forty-six. Xia Xue wouldn't doubt it, but others might not be so sure. In such a high-stakes operation, no one dares to guarantee results; even the current hospital director wouldn't easily state the surgery's duration. Xiao Ning was too nervous to breathe deeply, while Xia Xue could only accurately locate the artery and stop the bleeding when necessary.

Time was slipping away nervously, second by second. Xiao Ning moved back and forth between Xiao Lin and Xia Xue, wiping the sweat off their foreheads. The patient's issue was more severe than anticipated; alongside the primary operation, Xiao Lin took care of other lesions as he found them.

"Perform the final sutures." Xia Xue adeptly took the scissors and needle from Xiao Lin's hand, and cast a worried look at him.

"Go keep an eye on him! I'll handle the rest."

Xiao Ning obediently followed Xiao Lin's instructions and left the operating room. Xiao Lin's incision wasn't large, and the beautiful arc made it look like a crescent moon.

"Transfer the patient to the intensive care unit and observe for 24 hours. Monitor the wound closure and internal bacterial infection status. Immediately report symptoms like high fever, dizziness, and vomiting." Xia Xue cut off the excess thread at the last knot and put aside the instruments, leaving the operating room, while the two interns looked at each other. Was it really over?

"Outstanding!" One of the interns marveled at the completely treated wound, tidying up the utensils. "Is he the legendary figure rumored in school?"

"He should be!" Having seen it firsthand, the composed gestures left an unforgettable impression on the young man. Seeing the glow in his eyes, perhaps one day he would also stand at the operating table, becoming someone else's idol. For him, this was a precious experience.

Xiao Lin took off his surgical attire, washed his hands, and splashed water on his face. The patient had been moved from the operating room to the ward. The surgery was not the most perfect for him; he could only treat to this extent. Although their broken legs had been handled, the chance of full recovery was slim. The rescue would depend on the orthopedic doctors' plans, which was not within his responsibility. (To be continued.
