In the dead of night, a shadow streaked across the sky, landing in the courtyard after evading the surveillance camera on the wall. The security office at the gate was still lit, and inside people bustled about.
The shadow didn't linger but proceeded straight in, seeming very familiar with the surroundings, always able to easily dodge under the cameras without leaving evidence.
The City Police Department building is six stories tall; the first floor is the incident handling hall, the basement is the morgue, and the holding area for temporary detainees is behind the hall.
The shadow bypassed the empty hall and directly entered the third floor, if memory serves correctly, the archives should be in the innermost room on the third floor, while the research department is on the fourth and fifth floors, and the director's office and conference room are on the sixth floor.
The door to the archive room was locked. The shadow tried a few times, then pulled out a Silver Needle, twisting it in the lock. With a click, the door opened, and he slipped inside, using the needle-torch on his wrist to cast light. Inside the archive room, various items and dossiers from crime scenes were neatly arrayed, finding something felt like searching amid vast waters.
After the light swept around, the shadow moved toward a door, surprisingly, this door wasn't locked.
Inside was a storage place for miscellaneous items, although clean and tidy, it was much more cluttered compared to the outside. As he rummaged around, despite deliberately lightening his steps, he accidentally toppled a pile of items, causing noise. Luckily, the man in black was quick-eyed and deft, preventing more items from falling and making a larger racket. Returning the things to their original place, his eye caught a large box to the side, he walked over, tore open the sealing tape, to find a box of videotapes staring back at him.
"There really are some here." The man in black randomly picked a few tapes to look at, noting the recorded times and years. However, after searching through two boxes, he didn't find what he was looking for.
"Are you looking for this?" Someone appeared at the door without him realizing, standing straight, he slowly turned around. This person could silently emerge behind him, the inner family skill was exceptionally masterful. "Yan University Hospital's emergency room doctor, sneaking into the police department at night, what's your aim? If this news gets out, it will certainly stir quite a few discussions!"
The man in black was none other than Xiao Lin. He silently watched the person in front of him. The opponent doesn't move, I don't move either, hence Xiao Lin pursed his mouth, only listening, only watching, only smelling.
The person at the door moved slightly, Xiao Lin followed suit, within a blink, the two were already in the main room of the archive. "Isn't your visit just for this tape?" The sudden intruder shook the box in his hand.
"If it's something not verified by myself, I have no interest." Xiao Lin indifferently picked up an item resembling a fan, its shape was beautiful, yet it was unfortunately tainted with blood, discounting its unique appeal.
"Caution is good." The stranger stood with space, his voice caused Xiao Lin to furrow his brow.
"We've met before."
"Why do you ask such a thing?"
"The purpose of switching your voice isn't to keep me from knowing who you are?" Xiao Lin mocked with a smile, having some guess who this person was. "A forensic investigator from the City Police Department, we've met more than once now, haven't we?"
The stranger made an 'oh' sound, weighing the tape in his hand. "How did you know it was me?"
"Just a little deduction." Xiao Lin stepped closer to the stranger, with his approach, light shone on the stranger's face, revealing the forensic expert's face in front of him. "I've considered many people, but their motivations and timing couldn't align perfectly, whereas your position happens to be a job normies don't willingly approach, hence many people's gaze would naturally shift away from you, granting you more opportunities."
"Well deduced, but I don't think that's your goal." The forensic investigator placed the tape on the table. "You can take it back."
"Is it really that simple?" The forensic investigator's gesture actually made Xiao Lin hesitate, not understanding the significance of it?
"How complicated do you want it to be?" Fingers lightly tapped on the videotape. "Perhaps the answer isn't what you imagine."
Holding the videotape, the forensic's eerie smile often surfaced before him, leaving him no time to reminisce on what lay behind that smile. As he picked the tape up, the forensic investigator had disappeared from his sight.
He knew he was down in the basement room, when no light spilled from the second-floor doorway, then surely his silhouette remained in the basement, a very complex status ensued, Xiao Lin without a single hesitation sprang out from the police building when passing the basement junction.
There he is! That's what the forensic investigator wanted to convey to Xiao Lin, openly tossing his existence in front of him like this was a brazen challenge, I've proven your assumption, but are you capable of capturing me?
The silver-white QQ car whipped through the deserted streets, as he edged closer to the point, the sight before him became increasingly hazy. Now there was only one final step remaining to his goal, yet he felt as if he was sinking deeper.
In high-speed drive, he suddenly slammed the brakes, the piercing screech resonating across the sky, halting the car in the road's center, luckily it was deep night, no other cars were tailing him. He got off the car, leaning against the door. On the back seat lay the videotape, he silently gazed at it. 'Perhaps the result isn't what you imagine.' That statement's meaning was definitely not referring to this tape.
"Young Master Xiao, something's happened to the lookout!" The phone rang untimely, the tone was urgent as if Rainbow was on the verge of tears.
"Where is he?" Xiao Lin couldn't help but purse his lips tightly, Rainbow over there was recounting countless details, Xiao Lin paid little heed to them, instead, he jumped back into the car, spinning three hundred sixty degrees at the spot, racing towards the city center. "Damn it!"
Ignoring traffic signs, driving straight onto the pedestrian street. The car stopped before the alley. At this hour, it resembled an open-mouthed cavern. Xiao Lin flicked on his eyes, pushing the strands hanging before his forehead back, exposing his smooth brow and handsome eyebrows.
The entrance to the alley was tightly shut, no light emitted from inside but behind every single door waited two to three individuals, muted breaths drifted across the air, Xiao Lin's footfalls echoing on the cobblestone as if announcing the master's arrival.
The slipperiness and stickiness underfoot were blood. Xiao Lin crouched down, picked up a hint of it, sniffing it around the nose's tip, no temperature left, sternly congealed. (To be continued.
