The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 126: Victory and Defeat

A spell that relies on hiding and evading could hardly stump Buddha.

He quickly identified a tree within the vast mountain, its branches lush, as if the sound of Buddha's chants flowed through them.

Buddha uttered a spell and shrank his body, immersing himself in the dense branches.

On a small patch of verdant leaves, the loft was about the size of a dewdrop.

Buddha pushed open the loft's door.

The Novice Monk inside was striking the wooden fish, growing tense once again upon seeing him.

Buddha formed a Dharma Seal, slapping it onto the doorpost; the trembling loft immediately stabilized.

The Novice Monk's face turned pale.

Buddha lowered his hand and said, "I have no intention to harm you."

He sat down in front of the Novice Monk, as lotuses rose from the ground to support him.

The Novice Monk watched him blankly.

"I have vast wisdom to share with you," said the Buddha.

Here, all was calm.

Elsewhere, a fierce battle raged, seldom seen in this world.

The heavens trembled, a sea of fire surged, hundreds of thousands of troops clashed fiercely, firelight illumined everywhere.

The Jade Emperor, wielding his sword at the center, unleashed sword beams that filled the sky, shattering the void. All Buddha's disciples steered clear, none able to withstand his assault. Whomever the sword light struck fell plummeting from the sky.

The Heavenly Soldiers and Generals fought under the cover of the sword light, their fighting spirit boiling over like chariots thundering across the heavens.

Amidst the violent war, tremendous booms also arose from the earth.

Several hundred-meter-tall peaks suddenly tilted and collapsed, burying many reincarnated Buddha's disciples under the ground.

Among the tumbling boulders, Gouchen God emerged.

Seeing no more peaks to assail, he asked Emperor Qinghua, "Where is Buddha?"

"A hundred miles away," Emperor Qinghua replied.

Dazzling radiance enshrouded him, continuously splitting into avatars to deal with the myriad emergencies on the ground.

Gouchen frowned slightly, "Does Buddha need help?"

"There's no need to worry," Emperor Qinghua shook his head and said, "Buddha's mana is limitless. If he is in trouble, we wouldn't be of help anyway."

Gouchen thought it made sense and, bidding Emperor Qinghua farewell, transformed into a silver rainbow charging into the sky.

Many Buddha's disciples failed to evade in time were pierced through, falling from the heavens.

The battle intensified with the streak of silver rainbow, as flames billowed like curtains, mingled with shouts and screams.

Despite ample preparation by the White Robed Venerate, the Buddha's disciples were still being pushed back.

The disparity in combat strength was absolute, but it didn't concern him much.

Regardless, as long as the Buddha's disciples could be reborn, he would eventually win the war.

The White Robed Venerate turned his attention to Sun Wukong.

"With the War God Seal granted to you, yet you do not wield it well."

The White Robed Venerate said, "Better to return it to me, and I shall create another War God."

"It never belonged to you, how can we speak of returning it?" retorted Sun Wukong, swinging his Jingu Bang. A myriad of flames transformed into a Wanling diagram hanging in the air.

Layers upon layers of Wanling diagrams enveloped the Venerate, shining gold like a birdcage, emanating vast divine might.

The White Robed Venerate looked on but saw no sign of the attack; it was as if these Wanling diagrams were more to deter him from further interfering with the battlefield than to trap him.

The White Robed Venerate did not take the siege to heart, engaging his gift for gab while enduring Sun Wukong's assault, provoking him with words.

But Sun Wukong turned a deaf ear to his words.

He maintained the Wanling diagrams while using the assault to search for the White Robed Venerate's true body—yet the White Robed Venerate did not take him lightly, showing no trace from the beginning to the end.

After a stalemate that lasted the time it takes two sticks of incense to burn, neither gained the upper hand.

The White Robed Venerate shook his head: "You waste time thus, how many Heavenly Soldiers and Generals have fallen because of it?"

Before he could finish speaking, the Buddha's chanting from the ground suddenly stopped.

The White Robed Venerate looked down and, at last, his expression changed.

"Seven Treasures Pool, why has the revival ceased?"

His voice travelled to the attic.

Inside the attic, the Novice Monk was kneeling before Buddha.

The White Robed Venerate's question echoed in his ears, but it did not elicit a response from him.

Buddha stood up and said to the Novice Monk, "You possess extraordinary talent; if you study under me, you will surely attain enlightenment."

The Novice Monk bowed and answered, "I wish to convert to the True Path of Buddhism."

As if sensing its will, the attic rumbled, the clear spring outside gradually retreated, the blooming lotuses closed one by one, and then disappeared.

After that, not a single lotus remained on the surface of the earth.

"You used the Seven Treasures Pool to revive Buddha's disciples."

In the sky, Sun Wukong rested the Jingu Bang on his shoulder and said with a mockingly light tone to the White Robed Venerate, "Now, it no longer listens to you."

The White Robed Venerate's complexion turned pallid, filled with astonishment.

How could this be, his Seven Treasures Pool had defected?

This was beyond belief for the White Robed Venerate; the life of the Seven Treasures Pool originated from him, its life and death hung upon his very thought. Even under Buddha's coercion, it would not defect.

"What trickery have you used?"

The White Robed Venerate asked Sun Wukong, firmly believing there had to be a reason.

"No trickery."

However, Sun Wukong replied, "I guess that compared to you, Buddha is easier to get along with."

If he were the Seven Treasures Pool, he too would certainly turn to Buddha.

At least, Buddha hasn't become such a chatterbox as to remain talking until this late hour.

The White Robed Venerate's face darkened slightly; the transformation of the Seven Treasures Pool was entirely due to Buddha.

How could that insignificant Buddha command such conviction from the Seven Treasures Pool?

The White Robed Venerate was full of confusion.

However, after his confusion, he calmed down.

"I have the power to bestow Divine Skills upon the Seven Treasures Pool, and I can equally take them back," the White Robed Venerate said. "I am the Heavenly Emperor."

"But that takes time."

Sun Wukong shook his head, "They will end this war before those Buddha's disciples are reborn."

Upon hearing this, the White Robed Venerate looked towards the battlefield again.

The fact that Buddha's disciples were no longer being reborn was soon discovered by all Immortals.

Where would the Immortals miss this opportunity? Shouting, they launched a fierce onslaught, fire enveloped the sky like a Vast Ocean, and the Lotus Formation was breached again and again.

"How dare you!"

The White Robed Venerate struck out with a palm, trying to leave the blockade.

How could Sun Wukong let him escape? He swung his staff immediately.

The Jingu Bang swiftly enlarged in the air, smashing down towards the White Robed Venerate with overwhelming force, the sound intense, drowning out the noise of the surrounding battlefield.

The manifestation of the White Robed Venerate's Mana shattered and then reformed, completely suppressed by Sun Wukong.

"If we don't take action now, we will lose this war."

A voice suddenly echoed from the White Robed Venerate.

Several beams of light surfaced, and shortly after, vortexes appeared in the void.

The White Robed Venerate immediately grasped those beams of light, and the vortexes vanished.

However, Sun Wukong saw them.

He swiftly withdrew, his gaze sharply focusing.

"You have Buddha Beads?"

How could he forget that exceedingly familiar enemy aura?

The White Robed Venerate's expression deepened.

"Never mind."

He raised his head to look at Sun Wukong, who had not yet transformed into the War God. If the Buddha Beads were to come out, even if they won this war, it would be meaningless.

"The Brahma Void Heavenly Court is very far from this place; the Immortals have not yet arrived."

The White Robed Venerate said, "Sun Wukong, you win this battle, we will fight again in one day."

With one last glance at the many Buddha's disciples still in battle, he transformed into white light and disappeared.
