The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 159: The Object of Terror

Sun Wukong passed by many dead and silent worlds, but nowhere was quite like this—a true land of doomsday.

All Heavenly Dao, all spells, lost their effectiveness on the land of Hongmeng.

"There's not even fire."

Sun Wukong watched as the small flame he finally managed to conjure in his hand disappeared in an instant.

Before him lay the shriveled corpse, clearly not long dead, with shards of battle armor still clinging to the body.

This too was a formidable creature, perhaps inadvertently entered this realm and died here.

Sun Wukong wanted to cremate the corpse, but could not raise a flame.

"Forget it."

Sun Wukong put away his spell.

He wasn't surprised that he couldn't cast spells, but he was perplexed—this land could reduce power, but it shouldn't be lethal.

He and Emperor Donghua moved forward and saw several more corpses.

"Be careful."

Sun Wukong said to Emperor Donghua, "There's something tricky about this place."

Emperor Donghua nodded.

Soon after, a mysterious dark wind picked up from the ground. The origin of this wind was unknown, and touching it would dissolve immortal power within one's body, turning everything to ashes.

Emperor Donghua's complexion turned pale.

The Jade Seal surged out from within Sun Wukong, unleashing a terrifying energy that held back the strange wind.

"Thanks."

Emperor Donghua showed gratitude to Sun Wukong with his eyes.

"No need."

Sun Wukong eyed the strange wind that could penetrate flesh, an obstacle no amount of strength could withstand.

"Let's go!"

Sun Wukong hastened his pace.

He could sense the location of that egg, there was no need to search, just to go straight ahead.

The two traversed the desolate land, stepped over dried riverbeds, and saw the remains of Demon Beasts along the way, each colossal and imbued with an air of desolation.

These Demon Beast corpses, having not decayed for countless years, spoke of terrifyingly formidable bodies.

Even Sun Wukong wasn't sure he could do the same.

After passing dozens of Demon Beast corpses, Sun Wukong no longer paid them attention.

At this moment, Emperor Donghua stopped and looked towards a mountain nearby.

"What is it?"

Sun Wukong followed his gaze and saw a huge stone pillar erected there.

"A totem pole?"

Something stirred in Sun Wukong's heart.

He walked over and sure enough, it was a totem pole.

This totem pole was smaller than others he had seen, weathered by the wind for countless years, its surface already cracked and loose, but the shapes of the totems on it could still be vaguely made out.

Sun Wukong saw some humanoid symbols on the totem.

This was his first encounter with human-shaped totems, so he studied them closely—very small, appearing between the gaps of other totems, nearly invisible on the weathered totem pole.

Sun Wukong noticed one symbol covered by dust and instinctively reached out to brush it off.

However, the moment his hand touched the totem pole, a light burst from inside it, striking Sun Wukong like lightning.

Sun Wukong's heart shuddered, and his eyes reflected a vision of a pitch-black land.

On that land, countless small figures carrying massive stones, moved forward in a tide of beasts, much like slaves.

"Why is this happening?"

The vision in Sun Wukong's eyes was fleeting, vanishing without trace.

He touched the totem pole again, but no light emerged.

Instead, perhaps because he exerted too much force, the totem pole suddenly collapsed—

Sun Wukong was surprised, this was the frailest totem pole he had ever encountered.

Before Sun Wukong could reflect, Emperor Donghua suddenly ran up and pulled him forward in a run.

"What's going on?"

Sun Wukong ran, puzzled.

But his expression quickly changed and he sped up.

After running ten miles, they looked back and saw cracks appear on the land they had left behind, quickly joining into one.

In no time, a vast expanse of land before Sun Wukong poured down into the void.

A giant black hole had appeared on the lands of Hongmeng.

"That totem pole was the support for this region."

Sun Wukong's face was grave; he hadn't anticipated such an accident.

If totem poles were the support of the land, then the entire land of Hongmeng was probably held aloft by countless totem poles.

The problem was—if these totem poles were so fragile, how could the land bear the weight in the future?

Sun Wukong felt heavy at heart.

He and Emperor Donghua continued forward, encountering several more totem poles, but Sun Wukong did not touch them again.

He recorded all of the totem shapes he could see clearly but gained no useful information.

Several days later, they arrived at the central area of Hongmeng Land.

Ahead, a majestic peak soared into the clouds, grand and magnificent.

The sky was wrapped in a hazy fog around the peak, with myriad lightning bolts intertwining within, each vast and mighty, like formidable dragons of Hongmeng being born, captivating and fearsome.

"We've got trouble."

Sun Wukong thought to himself, the grey fog seemed ordinary but emitted the same essence as the strange wind encountered earlier.

Like the wind, it could pass through flesh and dissolve immortal power, yet it was even more troublesome—resistance even from the Jade Seal was strenuous.

And those lightning bolts were something even Sun Wukong could not fathom in their terror.
