The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 160: Two Barriers

Sun Wukong and Emperor Donghua approached the massive peak.

The thick gray fog tumbled and obscured the view, with both of them trying their best to dodge the lightning, walking towards the area where the fog was thinner.

After a long journey, a tide-like black fog surged in front of them.

Some blurry shadows appeared in the black fog, resembling ghosts, shifting erratically east and west, seemingly surrounding the two.

Emperor Donghua couldn't make out the nature of these shadows and his expression changed slightly.

"Don't worry."

Sun Wukong's eyes twinkled with golden light as he said, "They are just a bunch of devils."

These devils were very adept at concealing their presence, yet they couldn't escape his Eyes of Golden Flame.

"Why would there be devils in this land?"

Emperor Donghua inquired with his eyes towards Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong had no idea why, as by logic, even spells had perished here, and there shouldn't be any ghosts.

"We'll find out soon!"

Sun Wukong said.

The black fog surged up and the devils drifted closer, now clearly visible.

Sun Wukong stomped with his left foot, blocking in front of Emperor Donghua, and threw a punch ahead.

Though his spells were unusable, his punch was fierce and powerful, cutting through the air with a piercing tremor.

With a "boom," the devils approaching them turned into dust, swept away by the punch and completely vanishing.

The black fog roiled, and more devils surged over.

"No matter how many come, it's useless!"

A punch from Sun Wukong's hand shot out, shattering the surrounding devils, leaving none behind.

"Follow me."

Sun Wukong told Emperor Donghua and strode on.

Emperor Donghua followed him, curiously observing the devils along the way.

These devils were no match for Sun Wukong; his eyes could see through all deceptions, and his fists could penetrate the void, leaving no chance for devils or ghosts to escape upon approach.

But the devils showed no signs of retreat.

Each shadow surged forward as if without thought, charging to their deaths.

No, perhaps not as if...

Emperor Donghua quickly noticed.

These devils had no thoughts.

They were devils, yet not devils—merely shells of devils, with no life or even evil spirit within them.

Emperor Donghua's eyes involuntarily searched the surroundings, and then he patted Sun Wukong on the shoulder.

Sun Wukong demolished another wave of the black fog and asked, "What is it?"

Emperor Donghua pointed to the side.

Sun Wukong looked over, where there was a monumental stone, carved with a totem.

He approached for a look, and it was not a ceremonial column.

"Is this a Barrier?"

Sun Wukong looked at Emperor Donghua in surprise, who nodded.

Sun Wukong then punched out, and the monumental stone cracked open with a thunderous noise.

As the stone cracked, the black fog around them significantly lessened.

The devils were merely a product of an Array.

"Let's go."

Sun Wukong led Emperor Donghua deeper towards the peak, shattering all the monumental stones they encountered along the way.

After an unknown length of time, they found a strange, monumental stone.

Sun Wukong couldn't damage this stone.

"This stone is different from the others."

A sense of caution flashed through Sun Wukong's mind.

He took out the Jingu Bang, ready to smash the stone, when Emperor Donghua abruptly, and for some reason, reached out to stop him.

Sun Wukong looked at him with confusion.

Emperor Donghua walked beside the monumental stone and touched it.

Strangely enough, the stone shrank by itself upon his touch, falling into his hand.

"It turns out to be a treasure."

Sun Wukong put away the Jingu Bang.

He couldn't discern the true nature of the stone, but Emperor Donghua could feel it.

Many treasures have a mysterious connection with their rightful owners, and perhaps Emperor Donghua had accompanied him for the purpose of obtaining this treasure.

The stone disappeared into Emperor Donghua's sleeve, and with its disappearance, all the black fog on the peak vanished.

Sun Wukong's sense of the egg intensified immediately.

"It's up there."

Sun Wukong gazed at the top of the peak: "Less than ten miles to go."

Emperor Donghua gestured for him to continue leading the way.

"Wait."

Sun Wukong removed a bracelet from his wrist and placed it on the ground.

Emperor Donghua looked over, puzzled.

"This was given to me by the pharmacy."

"I've brought it here, there's no need to wear it any longer."

Sun Wukong said.

Emperor Donghua nodded, and then together, they headed to the mountaintop.

The path ahead was not easy; the higher they went, the less fog there was, but the more lightning.

The intense lightning enveloped the peak like the Vast Ocean, forming the ultimate defense.

The continuous lightning struck the ground, sending everything flying and shattering in mid-air.

As Sun Wukong and Emperor Donghua approached the lightning Vast Ocean, a bolt of lightning zapped towards Emperor Donghua like a thunderclap.

Emperor Donghua intended to dodge, but suddenly a mournful cry rang in his ears, and he became as if possessed by spirits, unable to move.

In the nick of time, Sun Wukong shielded him from the strike.

The lightning struck Sun Wukong's body, causing him to tremble.

"No problem."

But he quickly recovered, saying, "We can get in."

This final Barrier was inconsequential to him.
