The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 191: The Height of Understanding

In Academy City, demons are busily engaged in construction.

The outline of the city is now very clear, with school buildings rapidly rising from the ground.

Due to a shortage of workers, many young students from Wanling City were also recruited to help out.

"Grandmaster said having these students build the city themselves would strengthen their sense of belonging,"

said Immortal Zhen Yuan to Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong nodded, then asked, "Why is it called Mountain and Sea City?"

The name of Academy City had been changed to Mountain and Sea City by Immortal Zhen Yuan, which intrigued Sun Wukong.

"The mountains and seas are on the ground, yet it floats in the sky; isn't that interesting?"

Immortal Zhen Yuan remarked.

Sun Wukong thought seriously but could not find the amusement in it.

However, he was never too particular about names, so after Immortal Zhen Yuan's explanation, he did not probe any further.

"Junior brother,"

Immortal Zhen Yuan asked, "I heard you obtained Maitreya Buddha's Human Species Bag? Have you refined it?"

"No,"

Sun Wukong shook his head.

Immortal Zhen Yuan then nodded: "A wise decision."

Human Species Bag is different from ordinary magical treasures; it was initially just an ordinary cloth bag.

After hanging on Maitreya Buddha's body for years, it became an acquired Magical Treasure; it could almost be considered as a manifestation of Maitreya Buddha's divine skills, which cannot be taken by others.

The Golden Cymbal follows the same principle; others may only use it, but only Maitreya Buddha is its true master—should it shatter to ash, a mere puff from Maitreya Buddha would restore it to its original state.

"If you attempt to forcefully refine it, not only would you fail, but it would also offend that smiling monk."

Immortal Zhen Yuan said: "He is the Eastern Buddha, the Buddha of the future, be sure to treat him with care."

"Immortal, rest assured,"

Sun Wukong smiled, "I have my own considerations."

The function of the Human Species Bag is similar to the Sleeve Universe; he has already mastered the divine skill to absorb objects and had no desire to seize it.

The Golden Cymbal wasn't of high value either; a strike from the Jingu Bang could shatter it.

Compared to these two magical treasures, Sun Wukong has his eyes set on something else.

He waited for a few days, and sure enough, Maitreya Buddha came.

That day, as Sun Wukong was discussing matters with Ao Luan at Wanling Hall, a colorful cloud suddenly descended in front of the hall, and someone laughed, "Great Saint, your guest has arrived!"

Upon hearing the voice, Sun Wukong immediately came out to welcome the visitor, accompanied by Ao Luan.

"Eastern Buddha, it's been a long time."

He greeted with a bow.

Ao Luan followed with a bow, curiously staring at the round and rotund monk before the hall.

"Is this the future Buddha?"

Ao Luan seemed somewhat pleased.

Maitreya Buddha, with his broad ears and wide belly, had a face always brimming with laughter; anyone who saw him would be influenced by that smile and take a liking to him.

Sun Wukong didn't know many Buddha, but Maitreya Buddha was one of the few he was familiar with.

Back when he hosted a feast in the Heavenly Palace for all the heavenly immortals and deities, the sociable Maitreya Buddha visited a few times, and they got to know each other then.

Sun Wukong welcomed Maitreya Buddha into the hall and called for tea to be served.

"Has Buddha come for the Human Species Bag?"

He asked bluntly.

Maitreya Buddha smiled and nodded, appreciating Sun Wukong's directness which spared him the effort of broaching the subject.

"What does the Great Saint wish to exchange for them?"

Maitreya Buddha asked straightforwardly.

He knew that Little Golden-Horned Boy had misused the Human Species Bag, and Sun Wukong would not easily return the treasure to him.

"I want to learn some Buddhist spells."

Sun Wukong put forth his condition.

Even the finest of treasures paled in comparison to one's own strength.

Maitreya Buddha was quite curious: "With such vast divine skills, what spells does the Great Saint wish to learn?"

"I have heard that in Buddhism there is a divine skill that can turn characters into True Words."

Sun Wukong said: "The Eastern Buddha surely knows it, right?"

He was very interested in the Buddhist spells recorded in the Heavenly Book, especially the character technique used by The Bodhisattva Guanyin when taming the Red Boy, writing a character on his palm, and the "Ban" character Maitreya Buddha used to subdue the Yellow-Browed Boy.

The characters they wrote seem to possess supreme divine powers.

Sun Wukong also knew a few tricks, but they were merely ordinary Daoist skills, vastly different from those of Buddhism.

"Turning characters into True Words?"

Maitreya Buddha thought for a moment and then picked up the teacup on the table.

He wrote a character with the water on the body of the cup and covered it with his right hand.

"Come here."

Maitreya Buddha beckoned to An Jing Si.

An Jing Si walked over, and Maitreya Buddha released his right hand, letting him be affected by the character technique, and then threw the teacup outside.

Like one possessed, An Jing Si immediately ran after the teacup.

Not long after, An Jing Si came back with a puzzled face, holding the teacup.

"What the Great Saint wishes to learn,"

Maitreya Buddha looked at Sun Wukong: "Is it this kind of spell?"

Sun Wukong nodded in agreement.

Maitreya Buddha frowned, indeed, it was the divine power of Buddhism.

"This is the Tao, it varies with the individual, hard to explain clearly."

After pondering for a moment, Maitreya Buddha said, "I can elaborate on some principles for you but whether you can comprehend them is up to the Great Saint himself."

Sun Wukong agreed, of course.

Maitreya Buddha then imparted some principles to him, speaking for two hours before stopping.

"That's all for these teachings, anything more would be crossing the line."

Maitreya Buddha said, "Great Saint, may you return those magical treasures to me?"

"Of course."

Sun Wukong nodded, then had Ning Shen Si take out the Human Species Bag and Golden Cymbal, and handed them over to Maitreya Buddha.

Maitreya Buddha thanked him and then left with a beaming smile.

"Big brother."

After Maitreya Buddha left, Ao Luan couldn't help but ask, "Just returning the magical treasures like that, aren't we letting him off too easily?"

Sun Wukong looked at her: "Didn't you listen to his teachings just now?"

The words that Maitreya Buddha had just imparted were not intentionally concealed, so Ao Luan and the other Immortal Officials and Fairies around could hear them.

Ao Luan frowned slightly, seemingly a bit perplexed.

However, Ning Shen Si said, "Great Saint, those were but rudimentary principles and not worth trading for magical treasures."

The surrounding Immortal Officials and Fairies nodded in agreement.

"Rudimentary?"

Sun Wukong was stunned, then he sighed, "I see."

He suddenly understood what the Grandmaster had meant by 'the Tao is not conveyed to those who are not destined.'

Although Maitreya Buddha's teachings were simple, if listened to carefully, they were full of deep principles, and even he could not fully understand them at once; yet Ning Shen Si claimed they were rudimentary.

Sun Wukong couldn't help but shake his head.

"Big brother."

Ao Luan asked, "Have you comprehended something?"

She listened to the teachings, which seemed straightforward yet not simple, but she couldn't figure out why they were not simple.

Sun Wukong nodded, "Only a small realization."

He extended his hand and slowly traced in the air, and a golden light flashed, forming the character "Subdue."

As the character took shape, a violent wind arose in the Wanling Hall and Ao Luan's face changed as she felt an immense sucking force emanating from the character.

However, in an instant, the 'Subdue' character unexpectedly shattered into golden light, and the sucking force vanished with it.

"Alas..."

Sun Wukong sighed, "Truly, the Tao is not to be rushed; I need to go into seclusion for a few days."

Ao Luan couldn't help but look astonished.

Just from listening to some principles, Sun Wukong was able to write a True Words character.

Was his comprehension really that superior?

Why was he so obtuse in other respects—
