The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 25: Wu Xiang

Radiant and auspicious light enveloped the Scripture Pavilion.

"Is this the Scripture Pavilion?"

Sun Wukong stood in front of the Scripture Pavilion, looking up at this towering building that was a hundred feet tall.

His heart thumped wildly, resonating as if it were connected with the tall building.

Pushing open the grand doors of the Scripture Pavilion, Sun Wukong stepped inside and then fell straight onto his buttocks.

Sun Wukong fell to the ground.

He felt around on the floor and found a banana peel: "Why is there a banana peel here?"

"Everything can be found here."

A female voice sounded.

Sun Wukong looked up and saw a woman with a messy hair bun approaching.

"Are you the new Attendant Student?"

The woman looked Sun Wukong over and said, "His Majesty has decreed that you are not allowed inside the Scripture Pavilion."

Without further discussion, she dragged Sun Wukong out.

"This is your spot."

The woman brought Sun Wukong under a tree, where there was a table set up.

"Your duty from now on is to receive the new disciples who come to return books..."

Before she could finish, Sun Wukong saw an elephant suddenly charging out, striking the woman and sending her flying.

Sun Wukong was stunned.

Where did this elephant come from the sky?

"To put it simply, you will be a gatekeeper."

Not long after, the woman returned limping: "When someone comes to return a book, take good care of it and hand it over to me."

Sun Wukong nodded, worriedly asking, "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine."

The woman slowly walked into the Scripture Pavilion and closed the doors.

Left with no other choice, Sun Wukong settled himself there.

That afternoon, a group of young people wearing armor arrived.

"What are you doing?"

Sun Wukong stopped them.

"We're here to return books."

The disciples looked around apprehensively, trembling: "Isn't Sweeping Star here?"

"Sweeping Star?"

For some unexplainable reason, Sun Wukong suddenly thought of that woman.

Was she Sweeping Star?

He shook his head and then said, "I'm the new gatekeeper Attendant Student. Hand over the books to me."

The disciples immediately breathed a sigh of relief: "Thank you."

They handed the books to Sun Wukong, then quickly walked away.

Sun Wukong picked up the books and began to browse through them; they were about minor aspects of Cultivation but very detailed, slightly different from what the Grandmaster taught. Sun Wukong found them intriguing.

Clearly, Heavenly Palace did not want him to enter the Scripture Pavilion, but Sun Wukong patiently, every time someone returned books, he would read them thoroughly before handing them over to Sweeping Star.

The woman wasn't very talkative, but she was indeed Sweeping Star.

Upon seeing her being swallowed by a Phoenix, Sun Wukong confirmed her identity.

As for the disciples of the Three Thousand Immortal Paths, Sun Wukong was considered an oddity.

For the disciples who ascended through the Heavenly Ladder, who didn't focus solely on seeking the Tao and rigorously Cultivate, Sun Wukong was the only one sitting under the tree, reading, which was quite strange.

Though strange, the disciples couldn't help but feel fond of him.

If it came down to sociability, no one could match Sun Wukong. Within half a year, all the disciples were familiar with him, and many female disciples often came over.

Another day, while Sun Wukong was reading, a young man suddenly approached.

"Are you the bookish nerd?"

The young man asked.

Sun Wukong looked up.

"It's you."

Sun Wukong recognized the young man: "Have you also come here to return a book?"

"It turns out to be you; I've been looking for you for a long time."

The young man's eyes lit up upon seeing Sun Wukong: "I came to borrow a chess manual, but that's not important now..."

He moved a large stone, sat down in front of Sun Wukong, and then set up a chess board on the table.

"Come, play a game with me!"

"No way."

Sun Wukong slightly frowned: "I want to read."

"What books are you reading? Your books are all boring."

The young man glanced at the book in Sun Wukong's hand, and then took one out from his and tossed it over: "Mine is more interesting."

Sun Wukong caught it and was startled: "How do you have this kind of Heavenly Book?"

This was not just any ordinary Heavenly Book, but indeed the Taoist Heavenly Book.

"I found it."

The young man answered: "Play chess with me, and I'll lend you this book for a day."

Sun Wukong immediately agreed: "Sure."

He then started playing chess with the young man.

This soon became a routine, for some reason, the young man enjoyed playing chess with him, coming over two days out of three, each visit lasting half a day.

"The people here are all dull, only you are good."

The young man said gleefully: "Even the Chess Immortal always tells me to cultivate, but all I want to do is play chess."

"Given your talent, just playing chess is really a waste."

Sun Wukong said.

"I don't feel it's a waste at all, what are they talking about!"

the young man said, when suddenly he heard the sound of wind overhead.

He looked up and saw a woman with her butt on fire flying across the sky.

"This place is really interesting."

The young man couldn't help but exclaim: "There's even a sideshow to watch every day!"

"That's not a sideshow."

Sun Wukong shook his head: "You better come less often, I like to read in quiet."

"That won't do, I like playing chess."

the young man said.

Both being notable figures, when together, they soon became a topic of rumors—mainly because no one was more carefree than them.

Shangqing also heard the news and slightly frowned.

"We have to drive that kid out, with him around, His Majesty doesn't seriously cultivate."

He told Gold Star Taibai.

With the Jade Emperor choosing the path of chess, Shangqing had no choice but to secretly send over the Taoist Heavenly Book.

But to his disappointment, although the Jade Emperor picked up the Heavenly Book, he hardly looked at it.

"Isn't this good?"

Contrary to Shangqing, Gold Star Taibai was quite pleased.

"His Majesty enjoys playing chess, just let him play for a few more years, what's the rush?"

Shangqing slightly furrowed his brow: "Are you not joking?"

"Of course not," Gold Star Taibai laughed: "I haven't seen His Majesty this happy in a long time."

Witnessing the two young people discussing chess every day, Gold Star Taibai felt somewhat pleased himself.

"His Majesty governs the Three Realms; for him, such tranquility is precious."

Gold Star Taibai said: "Let him rest a few years, what harm could there be?"

Shangqing's expression darkened, upon reflection, it was true—every day the Jade Emperor played chess, you could see the joy from the bottom of his heart.

But even so...

"I am still a bit uneasy."

Shangqing said: "Go to the Underworld and investigate if there is a person named Wu Xiang."

He always felt there was something off about Wu Xiang, the Scripture Pavilion was too significant, it would be problematic if someone infiltrated it.

But however one may disguise themselves, the Book of Life and Death would not lie.

Gold Star Taibai went to the Underworld, and upon hearing the reason, King Yan immediately ordered an investigation.

"Wu Xiang, Wu Xiang..."

The Judge searched through the dense list of names.

He looked for two hours, his eyes were getting tired, when suddenly a butterfly flashed across the page.

The Judge turned to the page to look.

"Ah, found it, found it."

He quickly handed the name he found to Gold Star Taibai to see.

"Look, this is the Wu Xiang you were looking for..."

Upon seeing it, Gold Star Taibai was relieved and reported back to Shangqing.

Shangqing had no more doubts.
