The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 257: The Mortal's Game of Chess

The caravan entered the border of Wanling Country.

Disguised as Wu Xing, Sun Wukong sat on the back of a water buffalo, observing the once sparsely populated border wasteland, all now sensibly developed.

The border of Wanling Country had achieved full coverage of the Spiritual Network, with roads and water systems crisscrossing everywhere, and huge farmlands filled with water wheels.

Crossing the border, cities of varying elevations sprawled across the mountains and plains.

The Dragon Cars, once only found around Wanling City, were now traversing the vast land, their speed doubled.

Under the sunlight, those Dragon Cars looked like shimmering silver dragons, winding forward, speeding toward the distant horizon.

"I don't think the Yunxiao Fairy should be called a Tyrant."

Sun Wukong suddenly said.

Wang Lingguan looked up at him: "Then what should she be called?"

"Infrastructure Madman."

Sun Wukong answered seriously.

He had only slept for a couple of decades, yet Wanling Country had changed drastically, almost to the point of being unrecognizable.

"That title does seem apt."

Wang Lingguan couldn't help but agree.

He led the caravan into the city, leaving the villagers there.

Then, Wang Lingguan took Sun Wukong on a Dragon Car: "Don't worry, the people here will arrange jobs for them."

Sun Wukong was not worried at all.

He curiously observed the scenery outside the car.

The Dragon Car sped across the land, passing one city after another, where various architectural styles merged in the cities, colorful yet unexpectedly harmonious.

"Fortunately, the Immortal's taste didn't go astray."

Sun Wukong couldn't help but think of Immortal Zhen Yuan.

He used the outside scenery to distract himself.

Coming to Wanling Country, he felt it was easy to stay alert.

At noon, two Floating Cities came into view.

Apart from the shuttling airships at the ports of the Floating Cities, there were also some strangely shaped flying cars.

Sun Wukong felt he could no longer recognize Wanling Country.

After passing a dozen or so Floating Cities, as the sky gradually darkened, the Dragon Car finally reached Wanling City.

Stepping out of the Dragon Car, the water buffalo was panting heavily amidst the crowd, restless and uneasy.

"Okay, okay."

Sun Wukong knew it was suffocating, opened the scroll, and the water buffalo absorbed the Round Ball into its body, and flew up with him.

The entire Wanling City appeared before Sun Wukong's eyes, like the vast starry sky descending on the earth.

"Wu Xing!"

Wang Lingguan shouted: "Come down quickly, Wanling City has regulations, all Demons cannot fly around in the city."

"It's not a Demon."

Sun Wukong patted the water buffalo's horns, and the animal flew towards the city.

The streets of Wanling City were lined with shops, with colorful lights formed into various shapes and text to decorate the city as storefront signs.

Sun Wukong rode the bull flying over a street.

Below, seven girls were eating popsicles.

Feeling a shadow overhead, they looked up.

They all froze at the sight.

"That guy is so bold!"

"He dares to fly around on a bull!"

The girls felt envious.

"I also want to find such a bold bull."

"Ladies, that bull doesn't seem to have transformed into a spirit!"

"What!"

The girls noticed the anomaly, all their eyes lit up.

They jumped up into the air, landing on the back of the water buffalo.

Sun Wukong looked at them: "What are you trying to do?"

"Robbery!"

The seven girls, hands on their hips, said proudly: "We're taking this yet-to-be-spiritualized flying bull!"

Sun Wukong looked behind them.

"You can't take it anymore."

Wang Lingguan and Master Puti flew over.

Seven girls were harshly scolded, and Sun Wukong was also brought to Mountain and Sea City.

"Are you Wu Xing?"

After dismissing Wang Lingguan, the Grandmaster asked Sun Wukong.

"Yes."

Sun Wukong nodded.

The Grandmaster's expression became somewhat subtle.

The name Wu Xing was very special; it reminded him of the spell he had taught his disciple.

That spell was known only between them, mentor and student.

But standing before the Grandmaster, Wu Xing seemed just like an ordinary human.

"Show me what you have created."

The Grandmaster said.

Sun Wukong then unrolled the scroll, drawing out the Round Ball from the water buffalo.

The Grandmaster examined the Round Ball.

Every Spirits Daoism was formed by Immortal Texts—the Round Ball was small, yet it brimmed with tens of thousands of Immortal Texts invisible to the naked eye.

It was the first time the Grandmaster had seen such densely ordered Daoist Skill.

"Truly a genius."

The Grandmaster thought to himself.

Such a young boy, yet he had mastered the language of Immortal Texts that even Immortals might not entirely grasp.

He looked at Sun Wukong: "Mountain and Sea City will fully support your learning, giving you total creative freedom..."

The Grandmaster paused: "Here, there is an Immortal Language Academy, from which you can choose any courses you like."

Sun Wukong graciously accepted.

The Grandmaster then instructed his disciples to arrange a residence for Sun Wukong.

"Is he really Wukong?"

Watching Sun Wukong leave, the Grandmaster furrowed his brow.

Thus, two months passed, and the Grandmaster found Ao Luan.

"How is the boy?"

Ao Luan asked.

"It is confirmed now."

The Grandmaster nodded: "He is one of the very few, a true genius."

He asked Ao Luan: "Now can you tell me, what is my disciple's plan?"

"The Wanling Immortal Path created by the brother essentially represents a set of rules."

Ao Luan extended her hand, a glowing map of Wanling appearing between her fingers: "These rules will spread over time, and in twenty years, half of the Western Continent's nature's spiritual energy has been imprinted with it."

"I am aware of that."

The Grandmaster nodded, wherever the Wanling rules were effective, people could freely create Daoist Skill: "Is the disciple's plan related to this?"

"The brother granted the Southern Continent fifty years of freedom with only one purpose."

Ao Luan said.

"To spread the Wanling rules."

The Grandmaster continued.

Ao Luan nodded.

Once the Wanling Immortal Path was established, it drew immense attraction from humans of the Four Great Continents.

Countries flocked to learn, including those from the Southern Continent.

If Wanling could change the spiritual energy of the Southern Continent and imprint it with the Immortal Rules, the hearts of the Southern Continent's people would be theirs.

But…

"We have already ruled out this speculation."

The Grandmaster declared: "The Wanling Immortal Path cannot spread in the Southern Continent."

They had this speculation ten years ago; the Immortals went to test it, only to find that the Immortal Dao could not be imprinted on the Southern Continent for unknown reasons.

"Could it be that you..."

The Grandmaster looked at Ao Luan: "Have you found the reason?"

Ao Luan nodded.

"The nature's spiritual energy of the Southern Continent will not be dominated by Immortals."

She explained: "We always thought the brother used Heavenly Rules to limit the Jade Emperor's control of the Southern Continent, but we were all wrong."

It might not only be the Jade Emperor who Sun Wukong limited, but all the Immortals and Buddhas.

In his conversation with the Jade Emperor, he had said "a game among mortals," a realization that dawned upon Ao Luan over the years.

"To imprint the Wanling Immortal Path on the Southern Continent, we must find mortals to act on our behalf."
