On the day the Heavenly Ladder opened, a group of strange people gathered at the base of Kunlun Mountain.
They were men and women, old and young, and didn't look like Cultivators at all, but they all had one thing in common: they were holding scrolls.
An old and a young Taoist walked by and overheard these people's conversation.
"Can you teach me the technique of Enchanting? I'll trade you a Spell for it."
"What's the trick to your creation?"
The topics these people discussed were incomprehensible to the two Taoists.
"Master."
After walking some distance, the young Taoist asked, "Are those all ordinary people?"
"It seems so."
The old Taoist nodded.
These strange people showed no trace of Mana, they should be ordinary folk.
"They are not ordinary people."
Another girl passing by said, "They are practitioners of the Wanling Immortal Path."
"The Wanling Immortal Path?"
The two Taoists looked puzzled. "What is that?"
"You don't even know about the Wanling Immortal Path?"
The girl couldn't help but roll her eyes.
The Wanling Immortal Path had not been around for a long time, but it had spread all over the Eastern Continent, even in the towns under Kunlun Mountain where people practiced it.
"Where are you reclusive masters from?"
The girl teased.
The young Taoist blushed slightly: "We haven't left the Daoist Temple for many years."
Not leaving the Daoist Temple meant not going to human cities, so naturally, they did not know about the Wanling Immortal Path.
The girl couldn't help shaking her head.
"No wonder my father says that people from the outside world are deteriorating generation by generation."
She was a Cultivator born and raised at the foot of Kunlun Mountain, with both parents having braved the Heavenly Ladder as Taoists.
Back in the day, Taoists from the Four Great Continents had gone through hardships to come here, each one of them worldly and knowledgeable; even those eliminated were more broad-minded than today's newcomers.
Nowadays, the Taoists who came to the Heavenly Ladder had qualifications, but in other aspects, they couldn't compare to those of the past.
"Like the Three Thousand Immortal Paths, the Wanling Immortal Path also selects disciples through the Heavenly Ladder."
The girl introduced to the two Taoists, "Those people have come here to learn the Immortal Law at the Heavenly Wanling Immortal Sect."
She pointed out the direction of the Wanling Immortal Sect to them.
In that direction, the Taoist master and disciple saw an Immortal Mountain floating in the sky.
"How can they pass the selection of the Heavenly Ladder without Mana?"
The young Taoist inquired.
"The Heavenly Ladder doesn't need Mana in the first place."
The girl answered.
She had heard from her father that there had been cases in the past of people without Mana passing the Heavenly Ladder.
Recently, however, various Taoist Sects had studied the Heavenly Ladder and had been cultivating disciples specifically for it, resulting in others being excluded.
"Which sect are you from?"
The girl asked the two Taoists.
Just as the master and disciple were about to answer, a clamor came from afar.
"The Heavenly Ladder has opened!"
Cheers rose from the foot of Kunlun Mountain.
Without waiting for an answer, the girl immediately flew towards the Heavenly Ladder.
The two Taoists followed closely behind.
Under the protection of the Heavenly Soldiers and Generals, the annual opening of the Heavenly Ladder allowed the Taoists to enter the Dragon Gate one by one.
The practitioners of the Wanling Immortal Path also walked through.
Just past the Dragon Gate, illusions appeared before their eyes.
A scroll-holding young man saw a wounded, arrow-struck rabbit in front of him.
"This must be asking me to heal it."
The young man thought, such a minor injury was easy to heal.
He opened the scroll, only to be startled as the Daoist Skills saved inside vanished.
"How could this be?"
The youth became somewhat panicked, at first thinking his scroll had been switched.
But he soon realized that his scroll wasn't switched, the saved Daoist Skills just disappeared.
The young man understood.
He promptly took out a writing brush and began writing rapidly on the scroll.
As he wrote each line of characters, light radiated out, circling around his body. After writing for half a day, a spherical Light Ball had formed around him.
"I'm finished."
The young man joyfully grabbed the Light Ball in his hand, his hands beginning to shine with a green glow.
"Don't move."
The young man, hands gleaming green, pulled the arrow out of the rabbit and healed its wound.
Once the rabbit's injury healed, the scene before the young man changed as well.
A dim longsword appeared in his hand, and not far away, a treasure sword radiated a cold light.
"I see."
The young man grasped the rules—he had to bestow Daoist Skill onto the longsword to let it fight the Immortal Sword.
This was a test of Enchanting Skill.
To join the Wanling Immortal Sect, one had to demonstrate high-level creative skills.
"This is the assessment of the Wanling Immortal Path."
In the sky, Emperor Ziwei watched the scene on the ground, his brows lightly furrowed.
"Indeed different."
He thought to himself.
The Wanling Immortal Path was the complete opposite of the Three Thousand Immortal Paths—its key to Cultivation was not talent and power, but intelligence and creativity.
Days later, silhouettes rose from the Heavenly Ladder and flew into the sky.
At the foot of Kunlun Mountain, those who didn't pass the assessment looked enviously at the ascended figures.
As carps leap over the Dragon Gate, another group of lucky individuals ascended to the Immortal Path.
Some envied, some wept bitterly, and some felt regret. For the Taoists settled at the foot of Kunlun Mountain, however, this had become a commonplace sight.
They were used to such scenes of ascension and didn't pay much attention at first.
Until they saw more than a dozen beams of light connecting into a line, heading towards the same place, did it stir up a commotion.
"How can this be!"
The Taoists broke into an uproar.
"One... two... ten... How can there be so many!"
They found it unbelievable to see so many lights heading towards one place.
In the Three Thousand Immortal Paths, no Immortal Sect admitted more than ten disciples a year, let alone see a scenario of dozens passing the assessment simultaneously.
"It's the Wanling Immortal Sect, that's the Wanling Immortal Sect!"
Someone recognized the destination of those lights.
"Does the Wanling Immortal Sect recruit so many disciples?"
"Why is the Heavenly Ladder so favorable to them?"
The Taoists discussed amongst themselves.
The Heavenly Ladder of Kunlun Mountain was an Immortal Artifact personally crafted by the Jade Emperor, constantly gathering the essence of heaven and earth. Each year when it opened, it was time for it to select and transform the qualities of the disciples for the Three Thousand Immortal Paths.
Because of this, the number of people who passed the Heavenly Ladder each year was limited.
Like the Wanling Immortal Sect recruiting so many disciples all at once, almost no one had seen such a scene before.
"Right, the Wanling Immortal Sect doesn't rely on Spirit Roots!"
Some Taoists realized.
The Cultivation method of the Wanling Immortal Sect doesn't require formidable Spirit Roots.
Therefore, theoretically, the Heavenly Ladder doesn't need to transform the talents of the Wanling Immortal Sect's disciples. It only needs to serve as an assessment tool.
In that case...
"The Wanling Immortal Sect has no limit on numbers?"
"It must be so, everyone can join the Wanling Immortal Sect!"
The Taoists uncovered the truth, and the crowd instantly erupted.
This was to be expected, but for these Taoists, it was an unexpected joy.
