The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 295: Top Ten Wonders

That silly junior brother eventually became a handyman.

Sun Wukong watched him being ordered around by Daji within the Wanling Immortal Sect and didn't complain.

"Let him learn about the Immortal Dao here first."

Sun Wukong thought to himself.

With the opening of trade routes amongst the Three Great Continents, the connections between the Eastern Continent and the Western Continent grew increasingly close.

Amidst the rapid changes and development, Sun Wukong arrived at a valley rich in Spiritual Medicine.

"Great Saint."

Zhang Liang greeted him here.

"Where is Lord?"

Sun Wukong did not see Lord Lao Zi.

"He's practicing alchemy."

Zhang Liang smiled: "He rarely manages affairs, I'm overseeing the matters of various nations."

"That's very kind of you."

Sun Wukong nodded.

Lord was devoted to alchemy and concocting medicine; Sun Wukong did not expect him to manage too many secular matters.

Zhang Liang led Sun Wukong into the valley.

This was the most fertile land in the Eastern Continent and also a testing ground for the Wanling Immortal Path.

Many people were in the valley, with humanity from various nations learning how to cultivate Herbal Medicine through Wanling Immortal Path.

"Is this the Snow Lotus?"

Sun Wukong noticed the Snow Lotus by the roadside.

He stopped to look closer.

"We cultivated ten acres of Snow Lotus here, which in one year grows as much as three years' worth."

Zhang Liang said to Sun Wukong.

The natural conditions of the Eastern Continent were indeed great, more conducive to the cultivation of Spiritual Objects than the Western Continent.

Sun Wukong plucked a Snow Lotus and chewed it in his mouth.

Zhang Liang was stunned for a long time, seeing someone eat Snow Lotus like this for the first time.

When Sun Wukong finished eating, Zhang Liang couldn't help but ask: "How does it taste?"

"Disgusting."

Sun Wukong said: "But it's growing well."

When he sought the Dao in the past, he used to eat Snow Lotus as a meal and could discern the layers of the Snow Lotus.

"What can these Snow Lotuses be used for?"

Sun Wukong asked.

"Cure diseases, heal injuries, and also refine some nourishing Elixirs."

Zhang Liang said: "They are very useful."

He continued to lead Sun Wukong forward, also recounting the past year's situation.

More than a thousand Alchemists moved from Wanling Country to the Eastern Continent.

These Alchemists were teaching technology across nations and as a return, the nations would provide them with the raw materials for alchemy.

The Eastern Continent was a vast treasure trove, with every kind of thing to be found, just right for the research of Alchemists.

Sun Wukong looked at the valley; the hills and the wilderness were beautiful, with several short and clear rivers running through them.

By one of the rivers, flower spirits were collecting nectar from the leaves.

The nectar from the morning, being the time when Spiritual Energy converges, possessed excellent spirituality.

As he watched, a herb suddenly jumped up from beside Sun Wukong and ran swiftly along the riverbank.

"That herb has turned into a spirit."

Zhang Liang said.

Sun Wukong nodded. "We ought to be careful with these little fellows."

"That's natural."

Zhang Liang knew that Sun Wukong valued small demons.

Plant spirits were very rare, and the Eastern Continent, with its rich Spiritual Energy, had more flower and herb demons than other places.

Yet even so, the number of these demons was still very scarce and needed to be seriously protected.

"We have many flower spirits."

Zhang Liang said: "They can detect those little demons and won't scare them away."

However, encountering a small demon that had turned into a spirit in a cultivation area of herbal medicine was still somewhat surprising to Zhang Liang.

After all, the medicinal herbs they planted didn't have enough time to turn into spirits.

After visiting the valley, Zhang Liang took Sun Wukong to a Daoist Temple to see how they taught their techniques.

The Alchemists were diligently cultivating talents from various nations; this wasn't their first day at it and they had a clear plan for the development of the Immortal Dao in the Eastern Continent.

Sun Wukong observed briefly and became mostly unconcerned.

The talent system of Wanling Country was very mature. He had set a good start in the Eastern Continent, the rest could be left to others.

Sun Wukong returned to the Wanling Immortal Sect.

Emperor Ziwei was visiting the sect.

He brought a piece of news for Sun Wukong.

Jade Emperor had opened a Chess Palace in Wanling City.

The name Chess Palace perplexed Sun Wukong; no matter how much he liked chess, there was no need for the Jade Emperor to establish an actual Chess Palace, right?

But quickly, Emperor Ziwei explained to him that Chess Palace was just a name.

The true significance of the Chess Palace was an independent organization responsible for managing various competitions and activities of the Wanling Immortal Path.

"His Majesty said, this is Wanling Country's most important work."

Emperor Ziwei said.

Sun Wukong nodded.

It couldn't be said to be the most important, but Chess Palace indeed could control some of the development direction of the Wanling Immortal Path.

The competitions and activities of Wanling Immortal Path were crucial to motivating creativity and developing potential, so Sun Wukong was not surprised the Jade Emperor would value this work.

What he found strange was that Ao Luan had handed it over to the Jade Emperor.

"Aren't these matters under Grandmaster's responsibility?"

Sun Wukong inquired.

Before his departure, Ao Luan had told him to delegate these tasks to Master Puti.

"The Jade Emperor and Grandmaster are playing chess."

Emperor Ziwei said indifferently, "This is his reward for winning at chess."

"..."

Sun Wukong was somewhat surprised.

The Jade Emperor's chess skills were actually better than those of Grandmaster.

"It's alright, I've agreed."

Sun Wukong said.

Emperor Ziwei didn't spell it out, but he understood that the decision still hinged on his own agreement.

Since it was something the Jade Emperor had fought for, he had no reason to decline.

Emperor Ziwei was quite taken aback.

"Great Saint, don't you want to know what the Jade Emperor has offered to exchange with you?"

He asked.

Sun Wukong raised his eyebrow: "There's an exchange?"

"Scripture Pavilion."

Emperor Ziwei sighed; Sun Wukong's magnanimity indeed surpassed that of others.

But he still had to convey the Jade Emperor's will to Sun Wukong.

The Jade Emperor knew Sun Wukong wouldn't refuse, but he didn't want to take too much advantage, so he decided to offer the Scripture Pavilion to him.

"The Great Saint allows Your Majesty to learn the Wanling Immortal Path, and Your Majesty is also willing to entrust the Immortal Books of the Scripture Pavilion to the Great Saint."

Emperor Ziwei finally said.

Sun Wukong was startled, then laughed.

"He must know I haven't finished reading them."

Of course, Sun Wukong wouldn't turn down this offer.

As soon as Emperor Ziwei left, he went to the Scripture Pavilion.

The Heavenly Soldiers and Generals had already been informed, and no one stopped him.

"It's still the same old place."

Sun Wukong stood in the plaza and looked up; the Scripture Pavilion seemed to resonate lightly as it recognized him.

Walking into the Scripture Pavilion, Sun Wukong moved among the familiar bookshelves.

He could live there for an extended period once again.

Sun Wukong was pleased and called over Daji and the others to visit.

Curiously, Daji wandered past shelf after shelf when suddenly a gigantic foot appeared in front of her.

They looked up and saw a semi-visible giant sitting atop the bookshelves.

"The second Immortal of Colossal Spirit!"

Daji's eyes widened.

"That's not the Immortal of Colossal Spirit."

Sun Wukong came over and said to the semi-visible giant, "Night Patrol Deity, come down for some fruit wine."

The giant nodded slightly, then shrank in size, transforming into an ordinary human stature.

"Night Patrol Deity?"

Daji looked on curiously: "Isn't it the Immortal of Colossal Spirit?"

She had heard that there were many Immortal of Colossal Spirits in the Heavenly Palace, but she had not seen a single one despite being here for so long.

"He is not the Immortal of Colossal Spirit."

Sun Wukong repeated.

After the Sweeping Star left the Scripture Pavilion, the Day and Night Patrol Deities took up residence here.

The Night Patrol Deity guarded the Scripture Pavilion during the day and carried out his Immortal duties at night, while the Day Patrol Deity did the opposite.

"I remember now, those Immortals have told me about you."

Daji quickly became acquainted with the Night Patrol Deity: "You're one of the three big feet in the Heavenly Palace."

"Three big feet?"

Sun Wukong became curious: "Which three?"

"The Night Patrol Deity, the Barefoot Immortal, and..."

Daji hesitated, wondering if she should proceed.

She didn't want to get kicked.

"And Emperor Donghua."

The Night Patrol Deity finished for her.

Both he and the Barefoot Immortal indeed had very large feet, while Emperor Donghua was known to kick people when he got angry, a fact that many Immortals harbored grudges over.

Sun Wukong was somewhat amused yet bemused.

"Speaking of the three big feet."

Daji went on: "We have similar rumors in Wanling Country, about ten incredibly wondrous individuals."

The Night Patrol Deity was interested in this Fox Fairy: "You're definitely in the top three."

"Of course."

Daji swelled with pride: "There are many who talk about me; I'm in third place."

Sun Wukong got curious: "Then who are the first two?"

"The second place is you, Great King."

Daji said: "Demons have argued for decades over your skills in plucking hairs to transform, your transformation states, and even your sleep schedule."

The Night Patrol Deity laughed.

"This is interesting."

He then asked: "Who is the first?"

"The first is Qing Yuanzi."

Daji replied: "Every day, demons discuss when he will finally die."
