The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 3: Mountain God

The giant turtle carried Sun Wukong across the West Sea, and beyond the West Sea, in the most remote place, there was a mountain called Fang Mountain.

"We're almost at Fang Mountain. Here, two dragons guard a Medicine Peach that's been growing for ten thousand years."

The giant turtle said to Sun Wukong, "It is said that the Flat Peach on that tree can cure the ailments of immortals."

"Is it truly that magical?"

"Back then, Fu Xi had his leg broken by his father, and he recovered after eating a Flat Peach."

The giant turtle said.

Sun Wukong believed it.

He lifted his head, and in front of him appeared an Immortal Mountain, shrouded in mist and surrounded by Auspicious Clouds.

The giant turtle set Sun Wukong down at the base of the mountain.

"Those two dragon deities are elusive."

It looked around and said, "We need to find the Mountain God to ask, but we don't know where he is."

"There's no need to search."

Sun Wukong looked ahead and said, "He has sent someone to meet us."

The giant turtle looked forward and saw two white cranes flying out of the mountain, transforming into two youths with rosy lips and white teeth who landed in front of them.

The two young men clasped their hands together and bowed, "Master said that an immortal has arrived from outside."

Sun Wukong nodded.

"Please follow this way, immortal."

With utmost respect, the two youths led the way.

Sun Wukong walked ahead, and the giant turtle followed behind; its large body shook the ground with each step.

Fang Mountain was spectacular and boundless, the mountains undulating and forests dense, Immortal Energy rising.

The youths walked through the forest, the trees ahead naturally parted to the sides, revealing a path of smooth pebbles that formed a flat road. Once the four of them passed, the trees closed back up and the pebble-covered ground disappeared.

Sun Wukong was used to such sights, but the giant turtle was seeing them for the first time and couldn't help but marvel.

The forest grew denser, and the path ahead gradually became enveloped in thick fog.

In the mist, Sun Wukong suddenly heard a rustling sound.

Turned out it was two butterflies, carrying lotus leaves, losing balance and falling from branches in the parted trees ahead.

The youths were about to wave them away when Sun Wukong spoke up.

"It's okay, let them go."

"…Yes."

The two youths withdrew their hands.

The two butterflies, steadying their lotus leaves, flew straight into the thick fog.

"What are they doing?"

Sun Wukong noticed some crystalline liquid contained on the lotus leaves of the butterflies.

"Today is the Mountain God's birthday."

The youths said, "They've come to wish the Mountain God a happy birthday."

Something stirred in Sun Wukong's heart, and he followed the direction where the butterflies had gone.

After a few steps, the thick fog gradually cleared, and the scene in front of them suddenly opened up. Not far away, a mountain path appeared.

On the mountain path, a procession of animals moved forward, extending into the depths of the fog.

On the nearest path, a few elephants walked past, using their trunks to carry bananas. Alongside them scampered mice clutching peanuts and pangolins holding mushrooms, followed by a troop of monkeys carrying various fruits.

There were also butterflies, bees, and other insects, using lotus leaves to carry various fruits and juices, flying midway and moving along with the procession.

Curious and diverse creatures walked on a single path, like a colorful river flowing through the fog.

"Please, immortal."

The youths led Sun Wukong onto the mountain path. The nearby animals stopped upon seeing them.

A chorus of animal calls rose as the mountain path suddenly split in the middle, with the animals moving aside to form a clear path.

The youths continued to lead the way.

The giant turtle stepped forward and nearly stepped on some of the nearby animals.

Sun Wukong warned, "Be careful."

"Okay."

The giant turtle carefully avoided a dung beetle.

The youths pressed on.

After a few steps, several rash foxes carrying fresh flowers darted out from the bushes onto the mountain path.

But they saw the scene ahead and immediately stopped at the roadside, daring not move.

"This Mountain God has good relations indeed."

Sun Wukong thought to himself. All the creatures of the mountain had come to celebrate his birthday, clearly showing great admiration for the Mountain God.

They reached a valley, where the path ended.

"We're almost there."

The two youths said.

They took out a mountain plaque from their waists and shined it forward.

An Immortal Bridge immediately appeared, and the animals expertly stepped onto the Immortal Bridge, carrying their fruits.

Sun Wukong and the giant turtle also walked over.

After crossing the bridge, they entered a Cave Heaven Blessed Land, where there was a stone table.

The animals went to wait on both sides.

"Please take a seat, sir."

Two young boys led Sun Wukong to the table and asked him to sit down.

After a moment, a person appeared from deep within the Blessed Land, strolling leisurely, and quickly arrived in front of them.

All the animals lay on the ground.

"You are Fang Mountain."

Sun Wukong asked.

"Indeed."

The Mountain God bowed with folded hands: "How should I address the immortal?"

"Sun Wukong."

Sun Wukong replied.

The Mountain God performed two bows, and two boys immediately came forward to offer him tea.

The Mountain God then personally served tea to Sun Wukong, allowing other animals to come forward and place a variety of mountain delicacies on the stone table.

"These offerings are their favorite foods."

The Mountain God said with a smile.

Sun Wukong nodded, a butterfly suddenly flew under his eyelids, squeezed a drop of dew from a lotus leaf, and it fell into the teacup, instantly emitting a fragrant aroma.

The giant turtle smelled it and drooled all over the ground.

"These animals love these mountain delicacies; I would love to have some too."

The giant turtle thought this as a dung beetle very considerately came over and dropped an offering into its bowl.

The giant turtle was uncertain whether to eat it or not.

The Mountain God and Sun Wukong started talking.

The animals sat around and quietly watched them.

The Mountain God told Sun Wukong many things.

He informed Sun Wukong about more details of this world; the sky and the earth were collapsing, the stars were slowly shifting their positions, and the mountains and rivers were also dramatically changing their appearances.

The destruction of heaven and earth needed seven days, each day more dangerous than the last.

"Although I sheltered Fang Mountain."

The Mountain God said: "The creatures here only have five days left."

After five days, a flood would wildly spread, devastating everything, turning the waters tumultuous, and Fang Mountain would not escape disaster, inevitably resulting in total annihilation.

"Is there no way to stop it?"

Sun Wukong asked.

"Heavenly Destiny must be fulfilled. Countless people have tried to halt reincarnation, but were met with backlash from Karma, ending in dismemberment."

The Mountain God said: "To interrupt reincarnation, perhaps only an outsider unaffected by the backlash of Karma can achieve it."

He looked at Sun Wukong: "Are you perhaps from beyond this realm?"

Sun Wukong sipped his tea.

"Why ask when you already know."

"You are unlike others."

The Mountain God said: "You disrupted this realm, yet as I comprehended heaven and earth, I felt not the slightest annoyance but joy because of you."

He was a Mountain God, especially sensitive to the reactions of heaven and earth.

"Heaven and earth favor you; you might be the one who can stop reincarnation."

The Mountain God stated.

Sun Wukong remained silent, quietly sipping his tea.

The Mountain God watched him for a long time and said: "Immortal, I earnestly request that you save all beings."

Sun Wukong frowned.

"You needn't say it; I would do it anyway."

He spoke, thinking that this world might eventually perish, but since he caused this disaster, he should handle it.

The Mountain God joyfully rose to his feet and bowed to Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong then mentioned the reason for his visit.

"To find two dragons is not difficult; I will take you."

Having said this, the Mountain God turned to face the animals crowding the Blessed Land.

"Today the immortal has arrived to save all lives from being trapped by Heavenly Destiny. The longevity feast must end prematurely; please return, and accept my apologies for any neglect."

Having finished speaking, the animals got up, approached Sun Wukong, and placed more offerings in front of him.

After doing so, they left one by one.

Through this gesture, they expressed their admiration to Sun Wukong.

Then, the Mountain God led Sun Wukong away from the Daoist Temple.

"In the past, Fu Xi treated illnesses in Fang Mountain, and because he had a huge appetite, he ate all the Flat Peaches. The two dragons then hid the peach tree."

The Mountain God said: "They planted ten thousand peach trees, and I don't know which one is the Medicine Peach."
