The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 58: Awe and Greed

"Heavenly Dog?"

Sun Wukong heard Buddha Beads's loud shout: "Perfect, you'll all come together."

He tucked away his Jingu Bang and stood on the clouds waiting.

The Heavenly Dog hidden in the darkness saw this scene, terrified to the core.

"That damned Buddha Beads is dragging me down!"

What a joke, that Sun Wukong is simply a monster.

Panic surged in Heavenly Dog's heart, from the battle just now, it would just give Sun Wukong one more swing of his stick if it rushed over.

"This monkey is too strong, he must have let me go on purpose last time!"

Feeling something was off, Heavenly Dog turned and ran away.

Buddha Beads waited a moment and noticed that the presence in the dark did not approach but instead quickly receded, sinking his heart.

"Thinking of running away?"

He sneered coldly, True Sun Fire exploded, brilliance ablaze.

In the distance, Heavenly Dog also radiated light.

A beam of light enveloped it, turning into golden light, sweeping across the sky, bringing it next to Buddha Beads transformed into a red bird.

"Buddha Beads, you schemed against me!"

Heavenly Dog regained its senses, shocked and pale.

Its body's True Sun Fire was controlled by Buddha Beads, bringing it here.

It had been tricked; Buddha Beads had been plotting against it all along.

"You..."

Heavenly Dog glared at Buddha Beads: "What exactly do you want to do?"

"Now is not the time for this."

Buddha Beads flapping his wings, said: "Help me defeat Sun Wukong, and I'll grant you freedom."

Heavenly Dog hid its anger, looking towards Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong was surrounded by flames, as if he was the master of the entire sky.

He twirled Jingu Bang in a loop, an invisible heatwave rapidly spreading in all directions.

"Are you two ready? Then let's fight together!"

Sun Wukong told Buddha Beads.

Buddha Beads, furious, charged forward with Heavenly Dog.

Sun Wukong laughed loudly, his figure flashed and suddenly appeared behind the two.

He swung the Long Stick, and like a volcano, Jingu Bang fell, casually striking dispersing the clouds all around, enveloping Heavenly Dog, making it show a look of terror.

"Don't!"

Heavenly Dog let out a loud scream and then fell to its knees with a thud.

"Spare me, Heavenly Emperor!"

The stick stopped right in front of it.

Crazy whirlwinds swept past Heavenly Dog, exploding behind him, obliterating all its fur, turning it into dust.

"Heavenly Dog, you spineless creature!"

Buddha Beads, seeing Heavenly Dog submit, could not help but rage.

Heavenly Dog turned back to look at him: "You plot against me and yet want me to join forces with you, where is there such a good deal in the world?"

It was as wary of Buddha Beads as it was of Sun Wukong.

Buddha Beads, harboring evil intentions, who knows if he might devour it later!

Heavenly Dog bowed to Sun Wukong, saying, "Heavenly Emperor, I submit to you, please spare my life."

Sun Wukong frowned slightly, then nodded in agreement.

"Good, very good!"

Buddha Beads roared in anger, "Sun Wukong, I will perish with you!"

The red bird spread its wings, a cascading golden light burst from within, resplendent like a divine sun, absorbing the energy around.

A bird cry resounded, vibrating the heavens.

Buddha Beads ignited his own soul.

He truly transformed into a firebird, streaking across the sky towards Sun Wukong, his body flowing with True Sun Fire, spectacularly brilliant, visible to all.

Sun Wukong watched the approaching firebird, swung out a massive shadow of his stick, flames soaring, rolling towards Buddha Beads.

The giant stick fell, covering the firebird amid raging flames, pressing it firmly.

"Beep—"

The firebird tried to break through Jingu Bang.

Sun Wukong scoffed, Jingu Bang emitting a tens of thousands of feet of light, spewing fierce flames, sweeping across the sky.

The terrifying power caused the firebird's True Sun Fire to collapse upon contact.

Following that, the golden staff's energy descended, cleaving the firebird into two halves. It let out one final screech before plummeting from the sky.

Subsequently, a bright light burst forth from Sun Wukong's chest, chasing down the body of the firebird, and in one inhalation, sucked it in.

"Come back!"

Sun Wukong beckoned with his hand, and the strange egg returned to his palm.

The egg devoured another Buddha Bead.

Sun Wukong slightly furrowed his brow.

This time, without waiting for him to speak, the egg, glowing, spat out a Buddha Bead, which fell into his hand.

"What exactly are you?"

Sun Wukong gazed at the egg, this being already the third Buddha Bead it had spat out.

Sun Wukong safely stored away the Buddha Bead, then turned his attention to where the firebird had vanished, where some dimly glowing Magical Treasures were still floating.

"Come here."

With a gesture from Sun Wukong, these dimly glowing Magical Treasures were swept up by the wind and landed in his hand.

He opened his Eyes of Golden Flame.

"Indeed, they are Magical Treasures from the Immortal City."

Sun Wukong thought to himself.

The Buddha Bead's Tin Staff and these Magical Treasures were the items he had failed to find.

The Buddha Bead had used them to fend off attacks, causing them substantial damage.

However, Sun Wukong checked and found that these Magical Treasures were still usable.

"Go."

He waved his hand, and the Magical Treasures flew towards the Immortal City.

Before long, streaks of firelight soared up from various parts of the Immortal City, brilliantly illuminating the earth below.

The once-forgotten Immortal City, lost for tens of thousands of years, reformed and stood at the center of the world, emanating dazzling auspicious light and releasing immense Immortal Energy.

The Immortal City was restored.

The order of heaven and earth followed suit.

Streams upon streams of Merit Qi appeared, filling the heavens, and flowed with Auspicious Light.

The crystal-clear Jade Seal flew out from Sun Wukong, hanging above his head like a small sun.

Countless waterfalls of Merit cascaded down, enveloping Sun Wukong, who with a single breath seemed to resonate with the universe.

All beings on the ground could see in the sky, filled with Auspicious Light, where Sun Wukong stood like a deity, emanating boundless authority.

That was the posture befitting the Heavenly Emperor.

"Heavenly Emperor!"

The beings kneeled on the ground, shouting Sun Wukong's revered name.

"Is this the Heavenly Emperor?"

The Heavenly Dog, beholding that radiant figure, had a hint of awe and greed flash across its eyes.

If it could shine like that one day, even death would be worth it.

The Heavenly Dog thought to itself, suddenly noticing that Sun Wukong had closed his eyes.

He had just been recognized by the world, accepting the Merit, seemingly still unaccustomed to it.

A flash of greed crossed the Heavenly Dog's mind.

The Heavenly Emperor was busy adapting to new powers, unguarded.

This was an opportunity that came once in a thousand years!

"If I can eat even the sun, wouldn't it be something if I devoured this Heavenly Emperor..."

Greed clouded the Heavenly Dog's reason, allowing it to stealthily approach Sun Wukong.

"How audacious!"

Suddenly, a shout boomed through the sky, and a horsetail whisk, like a cloud descending from heaven, enveloped and descended.

The horsetail whisk struck the Heavenly Dog, instantly wrapping around it and retracting back into the sky.

Sun Wukong opened his eyes again.

"Who are you?"

He called into the sky: "Why take my prey?"

"Heavenly Emperor, forgive us."

A male and a female Taoist descended from the sky, bowing respectfully: "We did not know the Heavenly Emperor had plans, thus we acted unnecessarily."

The female Taoist glanced at the male Taoist, who then lifted the horsetail whisk up and handed it to Sun Wukong.

"The Heavenly Dog is not a good creature, please handle it appropriately, Heavenly Emperor."

The male Taoist spoke.

Sun Wukong took the horsetail whisk, looking inside at the Heavenly Dog, which was bound but unharmed.
