The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 96: Something Strange

The Heavenly Horse landed on the thirsty earth.

"This is where the Buddha Light resides."

God-beating Whip looked around, frowning slightly: "Why does it look like this?"

The vast land revealed deep cracks, with no vegetation able to survive here.

The air was scorchingly hot; as far as the eye could see, there was nothing but yellow sand and the skeletons of wild animals lying on the burning rocks and soil.

"Since the Star Palace has not become the Pure Land, it naturally looks like this."

Demon Suppressing Tower replied: "We'd better go to the Pure Land sooner rather than later."

"No."

God-beating Whip shook his head: "I want to stay here."

He turned and looked to the east.

"When we landed just now, I saw a city a hundred miles away, let's go there."

God-beating Whip made the decision.

They headed eastward, and the way was desolate, until after fifty miles they saw fields full of cracks.

In front of a field, God-beating Whip saw a girl who was all skin and bones.

The girl, in tattered clothes, squatted in the cracked field, digging at something with a stone.

"What are you doing?"

God-beating Whip approached and asked.

The girl, startled, pulled out something from the soil and ran off into the distance.

God-beating Whip watched the girl's retreating figure, barely catching a glimpse of a small piece of tree root in her hand.

"I'll go take a look at her."

God-beating Whip told the Heavenly Horse and went after the girl.

By the time he found her again, she was hiding behind a boulder, gnawing at a tree root.

"Why do this?"

God-beating Whip sighed.

The girl stood up, wanting to flee but was immobilized by God-beating Whip's magic.

The girl looked at God-beating Whip with fear.

"Don't worry, I'm not a bad person."

With a wave of his sleeve, God-beating Whip laid out a table filled with delicious food in front of the girl.

"Eat."

He released the girl's immobilization, and after hesitating for a moment, she swallowed and reached for a bun from the table.

She bit into the bun, then desperately threw herself onto the table, gorging as if starving.

"Don't rush, don't rush!"

God-beating Whip watched her with a chuckle, pouring a cup of tea to hand to the girl: "Here, have some water."

The girl was about to take the cup, but upon seeing the leaves inside, she immediately stopped.

God-beating Whip, puzzled, asked: "Why not take it?"

"Mom said not to drink this..."

The girl began, her voice hoarse as if scraped by a knife: "She said water with leaves added makes you hungrier after drinking."

God-beating Whip swirled the teacup, turning it into a cup of clear water to hand to the girl.

"Is this okay?"

The girl hesitated for a moment, then picked up the cup and drank it all.

After finishing, she looked at God-beating Whip timidly: "Are you an Immortal?"

God-beating Whip handed her a second cup of clear water: "What do you think?"

The girl finished the water once again.

"You must be an Immortal."

She said.

God-beating Whip laughed: "Why are you alone here?"

"There's no food at home."

The girl said: "Mom said she couldn't keep me alive and kicked me out."

"How could this happen?"

God-beating Whip furrowed his brow, saying: "No matter, I'll take you back and speak to your mother."

"Okay."

The girl, seeing him perform a divine miracle, had no reason to doubt and immediately followed him joyously.

"I live in Bing City, just outside there's a big river."

The girl told God-beating Whip: "Grandpa said when he was little, the river water had already become shallow, when cows walked across, the water didn't even reach over their backs. By the time mother was born, the water didn't reach the cows' thighs — and by the time I was born, the cattle in our house had disappeared."

"Why disappeared?"

God-beating Whip asked.

"Because all the cattle in the city have been eaten."

The girl said, "Everyone has started to go hungry, and my mother and I can only eat elm leaves every day. A while ago, even the elm leaves ran out."

The God-beating Whip didn't know what to say at the moment.

They soon saw Bing City.

"We're almost home."

The girl said joyfully, her home was not far from the city gate.

She left the God-beating Whip behind and hurried into the city: "Mom, I'm back!"

The God-beating Whip followed her.

He saw that the city was full of people in tattered clothes and emaciated bodies. The girl familiarly ran across the streets and entered a dilapidated courtyard.

The God-beating Whip followed and suddenly furrowed his brow.

A group of people with bellies sticking to their backs looked over at the courtyard.

"How come that child has returned?"

The God-beating Whip heard their murmuring.

"Wasn't she let go by that woman?"

"We let that woman take her place..."

"It's good that she's back, we can live one more day."

The murmuring of these people gave the God-beating Whip an ominous premonition.

He divined by counting on his fingers, then suddenly turned pale and couldn't help but take a step back.

"Has it really come to this?"

Even for an Immortal like the God-beating Whip, it was difficult to accept that fact.

The girl soon came out of the courtyard.

"My mother is gone."

She seemed anxious, came over to the God-beating Whip, and grabbed his sleeve: "Immortal, can you help me find my mother?"

The God-beating Whip looked at her, feeling a bit of sorrow in his heart.

"Why has it come to this."

He couldn't help thinking that this was not what he had expected.

The God-beating Whip originally thought that the world before reaching Jile would at most be infested with Devils causing suffering to all living beings, but he never expected to see such a scene.

"You sleep for a while."

The God-beating Whip stroked the girl's head with his hand, causing her to fall asleep.

Then, he turned around.

"You all deserve to die!"

The God-beating Whip, with wrath in his heart, wanted to kill everyone around him.

"God-beating Whip, stop immediately."

At that moment, the Heavenly Horse appeared with the Pagoda.

"Why?"

The God-beating Whip asked.

"They are sinful, but they were also forced into a corner."

The Pagoda said, "Haven't you noticed? There are no longer any children here."

The God-beating Whip was shocked.

Thinking about it now, he indeed didn't see any children in this city.

"The suffering of all beings stems from their attachments."

The Pagoda continued: "The Venerable has high hopes for you, you aim to become a Buddha, you must perceive the truth, and cannot make mistakes."

The God-beating Whip gradually calmed down; the Pagoda was right, if he were angry, he would have given in to his attachments, straying from the path to Jile.

Revenge wouldn't solve any problems.

Suppressing his anger, the God-beating Whip asked, "Is it always like this before Jile is achieved?"

"I have observed the changes in many stars, and it's mostly the case."

The Demon Suppressing Tower replied, "Rest assured, as long as the Venerable arrives, all disasters will end."

"And this child..."

The God-beating Whip looked at the girl at his feet.

"She and her mother will both be in the Pure Land."

The Demon Suppressing Tower smiled and said, "The Venerable can make everything here perfect."

The God-beating Whip was now reassured.

But although he was reassured, Immortal Zhenyuan, who was floating high in the sky, was not.

"This Star Palace is strange, it's not a common disaster."

Immortal Zhenyuan gazed coldly at the ground and said, "I just attempted to bring rain, and I was actually unsuccessful."

The earth was dry, and he wanted to bring rain to nourish it, but he was unable to do so.
