The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 67: Ever-Changing

Sun Wukong was speaking with Immortal Zhenyuan when someone outside suddenly called his name.

He went out to look and saw the Stone Lion soaring into the sky, launching itself at Immortal Master Erlang.

Immortal Master Erlang raised the Three-pointed Two-bladed Divine Blade, ready to split the Stone Lion in two.

"Stop."

Sun Wukong stretched out his hand and grabbed the Stone Lion back, asking, "What's going on?"

"Great King, this man is clamoring to teach you a lesson."

The Stone Lion answered angrily.

Sun Wukong looked at Immortal Master Erlang, seeing the Immortal Energy swelling around him; clearly, the Stone Lion wasn't just making things up.

When Immortal Master Erlang saw Sun Wukong, without another word, he charged with the Divine Blade.

This direct approach was most effective in resolving issues.

Sun Wukong leapt aside to avoid the attack, and the ground where he had stood was smashed into a large hole.

"We can't cause trouble here."

Sun Wukong didn't understand the situation, but knew with Immortal Master Erlang's extensive Divine Skills, a fight here would surely bring Yunxiao City crashing down.

With a thought, he transformed into a sparrow and flew away.

"What a superb Transformation Technique! Pity I can master it too."

Immortal Master Erlang's eyes flashed, and he sheathed the Divine Blade, transforming into an eagle and took off after the sparrow.

Just as he was about to catch up, Sun Wukong swiftly transformed into a heron and soared towards the sky.

Immortal Master Erlang found this intriguing.

He shook his feathers, transformed into a sea crane, and ascended swiftly into the clouds in search of the heron.

"This fellow's actions are exactly as described in the Heavenly Book."

Sun Wukong seeing this, felt a playful urge rising in him.

He had never competed in Transformation Technique with anyone before and couldn't help wanting to prolong the fun.

The heron flew to Huaguo Mountain, found a stream, transformed into a fish, and dove into the water.

Immortal Master Erlang circled in the sky for a long time but could not spot Sun Wukong.

"That Monkey King must have hidden in the water, turned into a fish or a shrimp, that's why I can't see him."

Thinking this, Immortal Master Erlang transformed into an osprey and started searching low over the stream.

After a while, as Immortal Master Erlang began to doubt his assumption, a water snake suddenly lunged from the grass on the shore, baring its venomous fangs at him.

Immortal Master Erlang swiftly flew up, dripping cold sweat.

The water snake plunged into the water and disappeared into the grass.

Recognizing it as Sun Wukong, Immortal Master Erlang, furious and frustrated, transformed into a grey crane, strode into the grass, and extended a long beak to catch the water snake.

The two thus began their chase.

At the South Heavenly Gate, the Jade Emperor and The Bodhisattva Guanyin, along with numerous immortals, gathered to watch the battle on the ground.

Seeing Immortal Master Erlang and Sun Wukong transforming back and forth, the immortals were astounded.

"Immortal Master Erlang lives up to his reputation indeed; his transformations are varied and unmatched."

"Pity, that Sun Wukong is no less skilled than Immortal Master Erlang!"

"Nonsense, Immortal Master Erlang is obviously superior!"

Tota Li Heavenly King peered at the ground through the Demon Mirror and said, "Look carefully, Sun Wukong is clearly being pursued by the True Monarch."

The Jade Emperor nodded, secretly pleased.

Sun Wukong indeed had skills, but he was fleeing, and Immortal Master Erlang was chasing; it was clear who was winning and who was losing.

After watching for a while, the Jade Emperor felt something amiss.

"Bodhisattva, why do I feel like they are just playfully frolicking?"

He asked.

"I feel the same way."

The Bodhisattva thought but did not voice her thoughts; instead, she chanted a Buddhist Scripture, saying, "Let me urge Immortal Master Erlang a bit."

She held her Willow Branch and waved it gently downward, immediately creating a breeze that fell upon Huaguo Mountain, touching the Spiritual Network and stirring Sun Wukong, hiding as a squirrel in a tree, prompting him to look up, his mind becoming enlightened.

"So that's how it is."

Meanwhile, the owl that Immortal Master Erlang had transformed into was searching for Sun Wukong in the dense forest. A light breeze blew through the treetops, and he knew the Heavenly Palace was growing impatient.

"It's my business what I do, what does it have to do with you guys!?"

Immortal Master Erlang was secretly furious.

He had fought too many battles, but none were as interesting as this one.

Sun Wukong, capable of countless transformations, was equally matched with him, and both were enjoying themselves, yet someone was being a spoilsport.

Immortal Master Erlang pretended not to hear the urging and continued to search for Sun Wukong.

He was momentarily inattentive and ended up waking a mother owl sleeping in a tree hollow.

The annoyed mother owl opened her eyes, and upon seeing Immortal Master Erlang, her eyes widened.

"Hey, do you have a mate?"

The mother owl asked, revealing herself to be a little demon.

Before Immortal Master Erlang could respond, laughter came from a nearby tree.

"Over there!"

Immortal Master Erlang flew towards the sound.

Sun Wukong leaped out from a few trees, turned into a cheetah, and started to sprint wildly through the forest.

After flying for a while and not being able to keep up with the cheetah's speed, Immortal Master Erlang transformed into a tiger and roared as he chased after the cheetah.

"Don't think you can catch up to me."

Sun Wukong increased his speed, running out of the forest and towards the lakeside.

"Why go anywhere but leave the forest!"

Immortal Master Erlang's eyes lit up and he followed towards the lakeside.

Just as he was about to exit the forest, a wall of light suddenly appeared. Immortal Master Erlang, unable to avoid it in time, crashed into the wall and was sent flying backwards, tumbling several times on the ground.

The immortals at the South Heavenly Gate were startled.

"What happened?" asked the Jade Emperor. "What is that wall?"

"That, Your Majesty, is a Rune Barrier."

Thousand-mile Eye quickly answered, "That lake is where a fox demon from Huaguo Mountain bathes. To prevent peeping, the demons have set up a Rune Barrier around it."

It might be Huaguo Mountain's best barrier, since even Thousand-mile Eye was unable to see the scene inside.

The Jade Emperor became furious: "How could Immortal Master Erlang be stopped by a mere barrier set up by demons?"

"This..."

Thousand-mile Eye was at a loss for words; he hadn't expected the barrier to be so strong.

"Your Majesty, Immortal Master Erlang was momentarily careless, he will break through the barrier shortly."

The Bodhisattva Guanyin told the Jade Emperor.

The Jade Emperor's anger subsided, knowing that Immortal Master Erlang was just caught off guard.

However, the fact that Immortal Master Erlang, with his Immortal body, was stopped by a barrier created by demons was indeed startling.

The root of the Jade Emperor's anger was actually his disbelief that the demons could create such a barrier.

"This Huaguo Mountain cannot be allowed to keep thriving."

The Jade Emperor thought to himself.

Back on the ground, Immortal Master Erlang, who had been flung by the wall, stood up with a pale face.

A mere wall blocking him would surely make him the laughingstock among other immortals.

Immortal Master Erlang returned to his original form, picked up his Three-pointed Two-bladed Divine Blade, and with a strong swing, shattered the Rune Barrier.

He looked towards the lakeside; the cheetah was there, rolling on the floor laughing.

"Dammit!!"

Immortal Master Erlang's face flushed red, unable to bear the humiliation, he pulled out an Immortal Slingshot, drew it back fully, and shot it towards Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong was hit by the slingshot and went flying into the lake.

There was a burst of cheers at the South Heavenly Gate.

"Immortal Master Erlang's slingshot is extraordinary."

Tota Li Heavenly King joyfully said, "This time, that demon monkey will either die or be seriously injured!"
