Bidding farewell to the Martial Music Star, Sun Wukong once again met Wenquxing in the printing workshop.
Wenquxing was burning books.
He had been burning them for quite a while, yet the books were not damaged, so he extinguished the fire and tossed the books into a water vat.
"Wenquxing."
Sun Wukong approached to greet him.
Wenquxing visiting the printing workshop did not surprise him; after all, this was his responsibility.
The two chatted briefly, and Wenquxing then retrieved the books from the water vat. After shaking off the water droplets, the pages weren't wet at all.
He was quite pleasantly surprised.
"Fireproof, waterproof, rotproof... and scratch resistant..."
Wenquxing made a few marks on the pages, but it had no impact.
"How long will the Daoist Skills in this book last?"
"Twenty years, or a few dozen instances of damage."
Lady Rakshasa stepped forward to answer, "If properly taken care of and undamaged, the book's spiritual energy will dissipate after twenty years."
"After that, it just becomes an ordinary book?"
Sun Wukong looked at it curiously and asked, "Is this book not for use in Huaguo Mountain but for trade?"
Lady Rakshasa nodded.
The quality of books used in Huaguo Mountain far exceeded that of the book Wenquxing had.
"These books have runes carved by the lesser demons."
Lady Rakshasa said to Wukong.
Sun Wukong understood.
Over the years, the demand for books among the demons of Huaguo Mountain had surged; other than the runes made by the lesser demons, more refined runes had no appeal in price for humans.
Wenquxing, while flipping through the book asked, "Does every page have a Daoist Talisman?"
Lady Rakshasa nodded.
The books were carved with minor talismans; when layered together, they protected the entire book.
The printing methodology in Huaguo Mountain remained the same as that of humans, with no fundamental changes, only a simplification of the process, making the technology faster.
But every paper made in Huaguo Mountain bore a talisman.
A few years ago, the demons had invented a transparent talismanic potion that they gradually started using in various trades - papermaking was one of them.
The demons drew transparent talismans on the paper, printed the text, bound the books, and then activated the talismans. Thus, a book was imbued with Daoist Skill effects.
In addition to talismans created by the lesser demons, Huaguo Mountain also had talismans made by the Demon Kings, and books bound with such talismans often had extraordinary effects.
"Great King."
Lady Rakshasa brought over a literacy textbook for Sun Wukong and said, "Humans can now use this textbook as well."
Sun Wukong opened the textbook and observed the text that appeared on it.
"How long can it be used?"
"Forty years," said Lady Rakshasa. "It can absorb Sun and Moon Essence, but the runes are difficult to craft, so production is still not high."
Wenquxing had noticed the literacy textbook quite early on.
"Monkey King, by involving Demon Kings in the making of this book, you would surely gain great merit."
Sun Wukong rolled his eyes, "As if they do nothing else."
"It does not matter."
He continued, "Keep on researching, the difficulty will decrease."
Wenquxing couldn't help but be curious, "Is reducing difficulty the purpose for your adoption of this printing method for books?"
"Of course."
Sun Wukong nodded.
There are many ways to imbue a book with power. The most direct method is to confer it through a spell—those books bought from various nations were created this way.
But for new books, Sun Wukong had adopted another method: combining Daoist Talismans with the book pages.
This method seemed simple, but the technological challenge was immense, calling for an overall improvement of talisman skills.
Yet, the upside was tremendous. Initially, empowering a book would require the magic of a Demon King, but now, it could be achieved by a group of lesser demons.
What Huaguo Mountain needed to do was to make the exalted Daoist Skills more straightforward and widespread.
After inspecting the printing workshop, Sun Wukong proceeded to the neighboring Daoist Talisman workshop.
Wenquxing followed as well.
The Daoist Talisman workshop was established more than a decade ago to cater to Huaguo Mountain's demand for talismans. It specialized in producing various talismans and had grown very large.
In different sections of the workshop, demons sat shoulder to shoulder, drawing various talismans.
This was Wenquxing's first visit here, and in addition to regular craftsmen, he saw a lot of lesser demons working together to draw talismans.
"Are these lesser demons also working?"
He asked, surprised.
"This is cultivation."
Wukong answered.
Huaguo Mountain placed great importance on talismans; they were a key focus of the demons' cultivation, and since the lesser demons were also drawing, Sun Wukong had them come to the workshop to learn.
His original intention was for the lesser demons to learn more solid skills from the workshop, but it seemed to him now that the demons had also found a use for the lesser demons' talismans.
Recalling the book he saw earlier, Sun Wukong couldn't help asking, "Did you force the lesser demons to draw talismans?"
"No."
Lady Rakshasa quickly replied, "We asked for their consent."
Sun Wukong glanced around the workshop and indeed did not see any signs of discomfort on the lesser demons' faces.
Still, he felt somewhat uneasy—hoping that Huaguo Mountain's development wouldn't turn into that of capitalists.
"I'll need to ask Ao Luan to pay attention to these aspects..."
A thought flashed through Sun Wukong's mind.
"Eh?"
Wenquxing suddenly noticed there were humans in the workshop.
"What are those monks doing?"
"Drawing talismans."
Lady Rakshasa answered.
Wenquxing frowned, "Why would monks need to draw talismans?"
"Elder Guang Hui invited them," Lady Rakshasa replied. "He said this method would help them quiet their minds and nurture their character."
Sun Wukong too looked at those monks busily drawing talismans.
He thought he recognized a familiar bald head.
Wukong walked over to take a look; he was not mistaken.
"Elder Golden Cicada."
He called out, "What are you doing here?"
Golden Cicada, who was focused on drawing talismans, looked up to see Sun Wukong.
"Amitabha."
Golden Cicada joined his hands in greeting, "Ao Luan has made a promise to me that if I draw a hundred thousand talismans, she will print ten thousand copies of Buddhist Scripture to give to the Kingdom of Aolai."
Sun Wukong remained silent.
No wonder he hadn't seen Elder Golden Cicada for a while; he had been here drawing talismans all this time.
But a hundred thousand talismans, wasn't Ao Luan being a bit too demanding?
"Elder, if you want ten thousand copies of Buddhist Scriptures, I can promise you that."
Sun Wukong said, "You shouldn't have to keep drawing."
Elder Golden Cicada shook his head.
"No, I must use my hands to print ten thousand copies of Buddhist Scriptures for the people of the world."
He regarded this task as an act of merit and after saying this a few times, continued to draw.
Sun Wukong, noting the uniqueness of the talismans he drew, inquired of Lady Rakshasa, "What kind of book will Ao Luan make with the elder's talismans?"
Lady Rakshasa shook her head; she did not know either.
