The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 94: In a Single Thought

At Longevity Mountain, Daji was sweeping the floor when she suddenly saw a beam of golden light land in front of Wuzhuang Temple.

"Great King!"

Daji threw down her broom and ran out to ask, "Did you defeat that bird man?"

"No."

Sun Wukong cast her a glance and said, "You will have to stay here a few more days."

Daji pouted, "It's so boring here!"

Sun Wukong ignored her and turned to look at Immortal Zhenyuan.

Immortal Zhenyuan watched him, "How are the divine skills of the Golden Winged Great Peng?"

"As formidable as reputed."

Sun Wukong replied.

Immortal Zhenyuan nodded silently. The Golden Winged Great Peng was notoriously fierce, and in terms of combat, had few rivals in the world. Sun Wukong had indeed not been at a disadvantage.

During the past twenty years, Sun Wukong had not neglected his cultivation. It was evident now that he was truly the Stone Monkey born from the heavens with invincible divine skills.

"Immortal."

Sun Wukong said to Immortal Zhenyuan, "Would you manage Huaguo Mountain tonight?"

"Why?"

Immortal Zhenyuan was a bit puzzled, but then he understood.

"You are quite considerate."

Immortal Zhenyuan nodded and left Wuzhuang Temple.

Elsewhere, the Golden Winged Great Peng had been blown away by the Palm Leaf Fan, crashing into a stone mountain.

"This is infuriating!"

The Golden Winged Great Peng stood up from the rubble, his face livid with anger.

What on earth was that fan? How could it be so powerful!

The Golden Winged Great Peng didn't have a way to counter the Palm Leaf Fan, so he returned to his lair in a rage.

"Great King, welcome back."

The demons had already decorated the lair with festivities.

Fine wine was already filled and placed on the table, but the demons feared that the human meat was not fresh enough, and wanted to wait until the Golden Winged Great Peng returned before slaughtering it.

The Golden Winged Great Peng received the report.

"Temporarily, do not kill."

He set down his Painted Pole Sky Halberd, sat on the throne, and gulped down wine.

"I'm in no mood to eat human flesh now!"

The Golden Winged Great Peng said bitterly.

Seeing that he hadn't brought back Mei Hu, the demons naturally guessed the reason.

"Great King," a bold Lion Demon asked, "we heard you were competing with the Monkey King at the East Sea. What divine skills does he possess to actually hold you back?"

"Endless transformations, merit-infused."

The Golden Winged Great Peng drained his drink and smashed the flask against the wall, "That rascal is hard to deal with, I must recover and fight again tomorrow!"

"Great King."

The Lion Demon brought another flask of wine and said, "If you want Mei Hu, why go through so much trouble? Just sneak in and steal her away, then you can vent your anger once you have the beauty."

"What nonsense are you spouting!"

The Golden Winged Great Peng slammed the table and stood up.

The Lion Demon was so frightened he trembled and knelt on the ground, only to see the Golden Winged Great Peng heading out of the lair.

"Why didn't you say so earlier! That makes sense, I almost let that rascal anger me into foolishness."

What was the point of fighting for something that could be snatched directly!

He flew swiftly, knowing Sun Wukong couldn't catch up.

The Golden Winged Great Peng once more arrived at Huaguo Mountain. Before he got close, he saw a Daoist floating above the mountain.

"I'd heard that the Ancestor of Earth Immortals had extensive divine skills. Though I've never faced him, there's no need to antagonize two at once."

The Golden Winged Great Peng thought, as Mei Hu seemed not to be at Huaguo Mountain.

When he left the lair, he had taken a few tail hairs and knew that Mei Hu was at Longevity Mountain.

After nightfall, the Golden Winged Great Peng infiltrated Wuzhuang Temple.

With Immortal Zhenyuan and his disciples absent, no one stopped him.

*Why is it going so smoothly?*

The Golden Winged Great Peng quietly moved to the room where Mei Hu was, feeling curious.

To be cautious, he discreetly made a small hole in the window.

"Great King."

Inside the room, Mei Hu was attentively serving tea to Sun Wukong, and then began massaging his shoulders.

"Won't you give me another sachet?"

"Didn't I already give you one?"

Sun Wukong replied coolly, lightly swaying his hand as ripples formed in the tea.

"One isn't enough."

Seeing the ripples, Mei Hu's heart stirred.

"Great King, give me another sachet!"

Mei Hu pouted, shaking Sun Wukong's arm, her chest inadvertently pressing against him.

"How outrageous!"

The Golden Winged Great Peng smashed through the window and stormed in, "What are you doing here in the dead of night!"

Sun Wukong was not surprised by the Golden Winged Great Peng's appearance.

"Since you like Daji,"

He set down the teacup and said, "why not pursue her openly instead of using underhanded means?"

"Easier said than done."

The Golden Winged Great Peng sneered, "Would she fancy anyone other than herself?"

"No."

Mei Hu answered promptly.

For a moment, Sun Wukong found himself speechless.

"Very well."

Sun Wukong shook his head, "Fairy Chang'e, see him out!"

The Golden Winged Great Peng was stunned. Before he could react, a whirlwind swept through, and he vanished.

In the corner of the room, Fairy Chang'e stared in surprise at the fan in her hand.

"How about that, simple, right?"

Sun Wukong performed a spell, and the fan flew from Fairy Chang'e's hands back to him.

He retrieved the fan and left the room.

"The Golden Winged Great Peng will not return tonight, you can rest easy."

Sun Wukong casually left.

Mei Hu watched his departing figure, her eyes shining brightly.

"The Great King is truly formidable!"

Fairy Chang'e nodded in agreement, growing ever more convinced of Sun Wukong's unfathomable depths.

It seemed the Golden Winged Great Peng was played like a puppet in his hands.

And twice being blown away by the Palm Leaf Fan had fanned the fury of the Golden Winged Great Peng coming out of the Stone Mountain.

*What kind of weapon is that!*

In his rage, he smashed the stone mountain flat before he calmed down.

*I recall that Lingji Bodhisattva has a Wind Stabilizing Pill. I wonder if it can counter his fan.*

The Golden Winged Great Peng transformed back into his original form and went to find Lingji Bodhisattva.

When he arrived outside the Zen courtyard, he transformed into a human form and called out, "Lingji Bodhisattva, quickly give me the Wind Stabilizing Pill."

"The Wind Stabilizing Pill has been taken back by the Buddha."

A voice echoed from within the courtyard, "The Buddha advises you not to provoke Sun Wukong. If you antagonize him, you won't be able to bear the consequences."

The Golden Winged Great Peng was furious.

It was the first time anyone had warned him so.

*What capabilities does that rascal have to be noticed by the Tathāgata?*

The Golden Winged Great Peng sneered, "Fine, then tomorrow I shall strike off his head!"

Others might heed the Tathāgata, but he would not.

The Golden Winged Great Peng turned and left.

"Amitābha."

Deep within the Zen courtyard, Lingji Bodhisattva clasped his hands together and asked the figure formed by Buddha Light before him.

"Buddha, if it is wrong, why not stop the Golden Winged Great Peng?"

"Right and wrong are only a thought away."

With a smile, the Tathāgata replied, "I intended to stop him, but now it is unnecessary."

He didn't want the Golden Winged Great Peng to tarnish the Buddhist name before Sun Wukong.

But now, as the Jade Emperor's tolerance for Sun Wukong waned and suspicion grew, it may not be a bad thing.
