"Deputy Director Li, I am now going to bail out my client," Zhong Wenyi said with a solemn face.
"Sure... sure!" Li Jiangping hurriedly nodded.
Lv Yan, frowning beside them, said, "Lawyer Zhong, I've long heard of your great reputation, but this time he's suspected of kidnapping for ransom, illegal possession of controlled knives, and moreover, suspected of violent assault. According to the national criminal law, he is not allowed to be released on bail pending trial."
"I have looked at the so-called testimony and physical evidence; that's nothing but a one-sided story. Also, I've seen those knives, a firefighting axe, and a mountain-splitting machete. One is used for firefighting, and the other is for outdoor exploration. Which one is a controlled knife? Do you think controlled knives would be sold in outdoor specialty stores?" Zhong Wenyi sneered.
"Eh..." Lv Yan was at a loss for words.
"If you don't permit me to bail him out, then I can only file a complaint with the Procuratorate," Zhong Wenyi said as he glanced at the few people around, preparing to make a call.
"No, don't!" At this moment, Li Jiangping hurriedly spoke up, "Bail, bail, we agree."
Seeing Li Jiangping backing down, Lv Yan could only feel helpless.
With Zhong Wenyi's negotiation, Lin Chuan's bail application was quickly processed, and a 50,000 yuan bail was paid. Lin Chuan walked out of the police station.
"Lawyer Zhong, thank you," Lin Chuan said while shaking hands with Zhong Wenyi, "I really owe you one this time."
"Mr. Lin, you are too kind," Zhong Wenyi smiled and replied, "I'm just fulfilling a request, doing someone a favor."
"May I know who has requested you?" Lin Chuan asked curiously.
"That..." Zhong Wenyi said with a wry smile, "I can't reveal that, but I can tell you it's someone very important to you."
Lin Chuan thought for a while, thinking hard but failed to come up with an answer. Someone important to him? Who could that be? Could it be the General? Unlikely, the General was already deeply upset by Lin Chuan's troubles and probably wouldn't want to see him for a while. Given the General's temperament, it was unlikely he'd concern himself with Lin Chuan's fate. Thus, Lin Chuan remained puzzled; who could this very important person be?
No matter how Lin Chuan asked, Zhong Wenyi was unwilling to answer, and with that being the case, Lin Chuan lost the interest in asking further.
As they left the police station, Li Jiangping and Lv Yan followed them all the way to the entrance of the station. Li Jiangping even patted Lin Chuan on the shoulder and said, "Lin Chuan, now that you're out, you'd better live a good life, stop causing trouble all the time, and give our police station a break."
"Of course..." Lin Chuan nodded and replied, "Deputy Director Li, you have a multitude of tasks daily (a pun on 'chicken'), us common folks naturally should be understanding."
"Hahaha..." Li Jiangping laughed heartily and said, "That's the spirit!"
Lin Chuan got into Zhong Wenyi's Audi and followed him as they left the scene.
Lv Yan, frowning, remarked, "Why do I feel like this kid's words have a hidden meaning?"
"Heh, a small-time thug, what can he possibly imply?" Li Jiangping said disdainfully, spitting on the ground.
"So you're just going to let him off like that?" Lv Yan asked puzzled, "This kid is a trouble waiting to happen."
"What can be done?" Li Jiangping smiled and explained, "Zhong Wenyi himself has stepped in; we can't afford not to give him face. Moreover, the current evidence is simply insufficient to prove anything. If we were to go to court, we'd probably lose for sure. Besides, Zhong Wenyi is aware of your ill-treatment of Lin Chuan; the kid could sue us at any time. That would be a real headache!"
After thinking for a moment, Lv Yan replied, "That's true. How come Zhong Wenyi would step in to defend Lin Chuan?"
"I don't know," Li Jiangping laughed, "That's exactly why I hurried to release Lin Chuan; this kid must have a powerful backer."
"Hmph, I can't stand this kid, I absolutely cannot let him off," Lv Yan said through gritted teeth.
"Oh, why bother yourself over a child?" Li Jiangping laughed, "Rest assured, keep a close eye on him from now on, and once we catch him with anything conclusive, we'll put an end to it. We absolutely cannot give him any chances."
"Sure." Lv Yan nodded, murmuring, "I always feel there's something off about this kid, like a bad omen."
......
Zhong Wenyi drove Lin Chuan back to Changlin Community.
Getting out of the car, Zhong Wenyi said to Lin Chuan, "Mr. Lin, I can only take you this far for now. If there's any problem, feel free to call me."
With that, Zhong Wenyi handed Lin Chuan a card, which Lin Chuan accepted with a smile, saying, "Sure."
Zhong Wenyi smiled and added, "I will be staying at the law firm in Jiangbei City for the time being."
"Okay," Lin Chuan nodded.
Finally, Zhong Wenyi drove away from Changlin Community. Lin Chuan watched the back of Zhong Wenyi's car fade into the distance. Although Lin Chuan was not fond of these legal sharks, Zhong Wenyi had helped him after all, so he felt somewhat grateful to him.
"Chuan, you're back so soon?" Uncle Liu was sitting at his bike repair shop, not doing any business, and his mind was preoccupied with thoughts about Lin Chuan. Unexpectedly, Lin Chuan had come back, Uncle Liu had sharp eyes, and with a slap on his thigh, he stood up: "I was still figuring out how to get you out."
"Uncle, I've caused you concern," Lin Chuan said as he handed Uncle Liu a cigarette with a smile, "I've been to the police station twice now, practically a regular. How could they not treat me with some politeness?"
"Hahaha..." Uncle Liu laughed heartily, "Boy, you're quite capable."
A young man passing by saw Lin Chuan and exclaimed with joy, "Brother Chuan, you're back?"
Lin Chuan turned his head, the face was familiar, knowing it was one of Zhou Kai's underlings, Lin Chuan replied with a smile, "Yeah, where's Zhou Kai?"
"Kai has taken people to the police station," the lackey said hurriedly.
"What's he going to the police station for?" Lin Chuan asked, puzzled.
"He's afraid the police won't release someone," the lackey said awkwardly. "So, he plans to use last night's photos to blackmail them."
"Damn it," Lin Chuan exclaimed in shock. "Quick, call them and tell them to come back."
"Right away!" the lackey nodded.
Luckily, Zhou Kai and his group had just left, and they got a call from a lackey right at the precinct door, saying Lin Chuan had returned. Hearing that, Zhou Kai then pulled off a flashy about-face right at the precinct's entrance with his group.
After returning to Changlin Community, Zhou Kai and the others were particularly elated.
"That's great," Zhou Kai exclaimed as he hugged Lin Chuan. "We don't need to go back this time, right?"
"It's bail pending trial for now," Lin Chuan smiled. "Need to go back anytime for the investigation, but I reckon this will probably be the end of it."
"That's good," Zhou Kai grinned and said, "Chuan bro, now you've got some reputation on the streets too."
"What do you mean?" Lin Chuan asked curiously.
"Going to prison twice!" Zhou Kai laughed heartily. "If a boss never went to prison twice, I guess there wouldn't be many lackeys who'd respect him."
"Get out, I'm not some delinquent," Lin Chuan retorted disdainfully.
"Right, right," Zhou Kai nodded, "Chuan is a government employee."
"Just a damn driver," Lin Chuan said, with a cigarette in his mouth.
The group returned to the factory, and upon entering, Lin Chuan's eyes were immediately drawn to the Beijing jeep sitting in the center of the factory. Zhou Kai had pulled the battered car out from a corner, with the vehicle badly damaged, doors deformed, and seats stripped. Fortunately, the engine and other key components were still in place. The main structure was intact, so Lin Chuan was also reassured.
"When can this car be fixed?" Lin Chuan asked.
"No idea yet," Zhou Kai said with a wry smile. "Chuan, this clunker is killing me. Many of the structures are different from today's cars. It took me a while to figure it out. To actually repair it, it's probably going to take more than just a few days. Plus, I need to scour the internet for parts and also check if there are similar vintage cars anywhere."
"Alright then, I appreciate your hard work," Lin Chuan patted Zhou Kai on the shoulder. "No matter the cost, you must restore this car to the latest configuration for me."
"Don't worry," Zhou Kai nodded. "Mission will be accomplished."
At this moment, a bunch of people burst in from outside.
The leader was a guy with a hugely swollen nose. Lin Chuan immediately recognized that they were the people he had thoroughly dealt with a few days ago. Lin Chuan smiled and asked, "How's it going? Finished your community service?"
"Brother Chuan, we... it's all done," the man said awkwardly. "All the work was completed as you instructed."
"Did you finish carrying the coal for Mr. Li's house?"
"Yeah, it's all taken care of."
"What about cleaning for Uncle Liu's house?"
"Done."
"Did you remove all the trash at Uncle Liang's doorstep?"
"The brothers suffered quite a bit; it took several days to sort out."
...
After the questioning, Lin Chuan nodded with satisfaction and said, "Good, but I will check the scene later. If you didn't finish or skimped on the work, I won't let you off the hook easily."
"Yes, yes!" The man nodded awkwardly.
"What's your name, kid?" Lin Chuan asked.
"I... my name is Li Fugui," the man's face turned beet red.
"Alright, get lost," Lin Chuan waved his hand.
"Thank you, Brother Chuan," Li Fugui quickly ran off with his group. Finally escaping the clutches of hell, he had been living quite repressed these past few days. However, after receiving excessive praise from the local residents and genuine concern from many people, Li Fugui's attitude began to change. He discovered, could doing good deeds also bring happiness? So much so that Li Fugui volunteered for an extra day. The lackeys were more than happy with that.
After inspecting the factory, Lin Chuan returned home.
Mrs. Lin was preparing lunch for Lin Chuan, and upon seeing him return, she asked, "Why did you get off work so early today?"
"Yeah. The boss isn't going out, so I came back early," Lin Chuan took off his coat and hung it on the rack.
