Mystic Overlord: Reading Gives Strength

Chapter 853: Ant-Scorpions

This cave ecosystem hidden beneath the ice field is truly unique.

Each expansive cave contains one dominant biological group that holds an absolute advantage in this space.

At this moment, Nicole hinted to Ronald.

It was just her and her fellow investigators who had just escaped from a dangerous group of creatures.

Ronald understood this point.

Just recalling the state of these investigators when he first saw them.

Ronald knew clearly that the creatures here were certainly deadly assassins for ordinary people!

And so it was.

After the two passed through a passage close to the Arctic continent surface, yet topped by cold hard ice, they arrived at another gigantic cave adjacent to the previous one.

The surrounding environment was as pitch black as before.

Yet, thanks to Ronald's extraordinary visual ability, he could still see everything around him clearly.

Just a hundred meters ahead of them, a strange insect, resembling a mix of scorpions and ants, with a pile of shovel-like pincers, was crawling back and forth across the ground in a cluster.

Ronald could even discern the details of these creatures' movements.

Each time they crawled to a spot, they would use their antennae to touch the ground briefly before quickly changing direction to continue searching the ground nearby.

An interesting way to move...

Taking in the scene, Ronald couldn't help but turn to the investigator girl beside him:

"Nicole, I can see their movements now."

"Are they still hunting you?"

The investigator girl wrinkled her nose disdainfully at the creatures but quickly nodded and responded to Ronald:

"That's right, they are indeed looking for us."

"These creatures primarily have two ways of sensing the environment. One is close-range combat-style probing; they can react very sensitively to nearby heat sources. The other is by licking the ground with their mouthparts to analyze the remnants left by enemies in the soil."

"We discovered this trait of theirs, which is how we managed to escape from here successfully."

"So, what's the real threat of these creatures?" Ronald continued to ask.

Nicole proceeded to explain the abilities of these creatures:

"Overall summary."

"Although these creatures aren't particularly resistant to spells, they are numerous—too numerous to handle. Moreover, with their ability to act collectively, their shells are hard enough, and even their pincers carry lethal venom."

"Once overwhelmed by their hardness or sheer numbers, then attacked by them, the injured person quickly loses the ability to move due to the venom."

"..."

"I roughly get it now."

Having obtained detailed information from Nicole, Ronald quickly made a decision.

He and the girl beside him weren't here to establish human territory in this underground world. Therefore, Ronald naturally didn't plan on destroying the ecosystem here or eliminating certain dangerous creatures entirely.

And furthermore.

After understanding these creatures' methods of exploring their environment, Ronald had already figured out a way to completely avoid them.

If he could avoid combat, he would be quite pleased to do so.

"Starting from the relationship between the entire Earth and the sky, we will begin to structure our perceptions..."

Ronald softly chanted a spell from "Astronomy Master."

With Nicole's surprised exclamation, the bodies of both lifted off the ground, soaring through the air in a precise arc, and continued to venture deeper into the cave.

The creatures below them were quite interesting too.

Typically, underground creatures are highly sensitive to vibrations and sounds, yet these ant scorpions lack sensitivity to sound.

Ronald simply ascended to a certain height with Nicole, completely evading the creatures' detection. These oddly shaped creatures didn't even react to them in the slightest.

Such unique life forms could only emerge in this special environment.

Thinking this way.

Ronald flew forward, heading toward the direction the investigators had explored.

Flying in the air, Ronald also perceived the rough outline of the entire cave from a higher vantage point.

The method to enter this cave wasn't limited to just these two paths.

Around the entire cave, there were no less than six tunnels connecting to other locations, including two extras that had been actively sealed by the creatures using soil from the environment.

Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the two sealed tunnels, these ant scorpions continued excavating earth and stones, expanding the original cave.

Seeing this, Ronald immediately formed a hypothesis.

The places those two sealed caves led to likely housed biological groups these ant scorpions couldn't handle, which is why they actively blocked the paths. The places they were now opening up should be areas with species they could suppress and erode.

Even the venomous pincers.

Were shaped in a somewhat deformed manner for easier digging.

This new biological system.

Surely is something that can captivate many people.

"..."

Unfortunately, Ronald's appreciation for this ecosystem couldn't last long. He wasn't here for research either, with more urgent goals to handle.

Carrying Nicole through the air across the cave.

They quickly found the spot where the investigators entered the cave from above, sped towards it again.

Creatures that should have posed significant trouble for anyone passing through here.

So easily overcome with the flying spell.

Experiencing such convenience.

Nicole couldn't help but express to Ronald:

"Ronald, being able to fly is really cheating!"

"If we had someone who could fly, perhaps the loss situation wouldn't have been so severe."

Ronald returned a thoughtful expression:

"I acquired the flying spell after defeating enemies in Springs; it truly is a rare and useful ability!"

Ronald's sentiment came from the heart.

Although many enemies recently had flying abilities, from a broader perspective, flying abilities are genuinely scarce.

Just among the people around Ronald.

Even Costate doesn't usually possess flying ability.

Her recent ability to move through the air derived from a unique monthly changing spell, which only allows her to manipulate air currents and fly at specific times of the year.

Like when she brought Ronald back to Kurpis.

Due to the incorrect month, Costate lacked this ability, so in the earlier part of their return journey, they had to dutifully ride the carriage back home.

Even the top-tier combatants in the mysterious realm can only fly at specific times.

This demonstrates the rarity of such abilities.
