This Japanese Monogatari Isn't Lame

Chapter 396. Believe in Science (4000 words)

The situation before my eyes was just too similar to that of the last bravery contest.

One after another, visitors entered the haunted house and were then frightened to the point of going weak in the knees, with some even fainting on the spot.

The infirmary was overflowing!

Hearing this all-too-familiar news, Qianhe Kagura, already restless, couldn't help but come to the haunted house set up by class 2-A.

"Does Teacher Qianhe want to come in for a visit?"

Miyashita, standing guard at the entrance, heard his homeroom teacher state this and looked a bit unnatural.

He glanced around to make sure no one was within earshot and then lowered his voice cautiously, "I'm not suggesting anything, but... Teacher Qianhe... the haunted house set up by Beichuan... by Beichuan, gives me a really bad feeling."

Miyashita, as one of the designers of the haunted house, of course knew what mechanisms had been set up inside.

But despite knowing, every time he entered the haunted house he felt a chilling sensation on his neck, and the oppressive environment, which forcibly narrowed the visible range, was bizarre to an extent that defied description.

Curtains dripping with bloodstains and torn fabric.

Cold stares lurking in the darkness.

Whispers drifting around the ears.

Surely these things weren't considered during the set up, yet the actual experience of this haunted house was one of pervasive, unsettling oppression as if a despairing specter dwelled within.

Once inside, one could feel the stark difference from the outside world, almost as if there really were vengeful spirits residing there.

Speaking of this, Miyashita could no longer suppress his imagination. His shoulders trembled and his voice came out hoarse,

"If it's that Beichuan Demon King... No, I mean Beichuan... It might really be..."

"..." Qianhe Kagura.

Though she had heard of the notoriety of Beichuan Si, she hadn't expected that amongst the students, Beichuan Si had already acquired such a reputation.

Qianhe Kagura frowned deeply, then calmly reached out to place her hands on the trembling shoulders of the student before her,

"Miyashita, you must have watched too many horror movies, which is why you are imagining all these unfounded things."

She analyzed calmly, "The so-called haunted house is nothing more than a claustrophobic and terrifying environment combined with realistic props and excellent performances by the 'ghost' actors. It's all about psychological suggestion in certain places, then magnifying this fear, making you suspicious and scared."

Qianhe Kagura concluded with a professional demeanor, "In other words, the seemingly bizarre and terrifying scenes in the haunted house all have a scientific basis, and there's really nothing to be afraid of provided you don't let your imagination run wild. We should trust in science, Miyashita."

Indeed.

If you asked Qianhe Kagura to believe that Beichuan Si had hidden a serial killer in the haunted house, she might even believe you, but if you asked Teacher Qianhe, a firm atheist, to believe that there were actual ghosts and goblins inside...?

That would be utterly ridiculous.

Her stream of technical jargon, especially that last phrase 'trust in science', left Miyashita momentarily stunned.

After a long time, the boy said with a dazed look on his face, "I understand, Teacher Qianhe. I will trust in science... So, are you going in now?"

"Yes, always remember to trust in science. As for me... I'm going straight in right now. It's part of a teacher's duty to inspect the student-setup of the haunted house," Qianhe Kagura nodded.

But that was a lie.

Qianhe Kagura wanted to know what exactly Beichuan Si had done.

What he had hidden inside the haunted house.

If he really had hidden a dangerous person inside...

Qianhe Kagura cleared her throat, greeted Miyashita with a nod, took the small glow-in-the-dark flashlight he handed her, and walked in.

This little flashlight could only provide a faint glimmer of light, barely illuminating a meter ahead on the path.

It was pitch black all around.

It was clear that the students of class 2-A had put in effort, covering the windows with black cloth or black cardboard, and then adding curtains to create an environment where one could hardly see their own hand in front of their face.

Gurgling.

Qianhe Kagura swallowed and couldn't help but mutter to herself, "Why does it feel a bit cold?"

Indeed. Why was it a bit cold?

It was already summer, and even if the temperature wasn't that high, it shouldn't be this cold, right?

And this cold... it was the kind of bone-chilling cold you feel when a gust of wind blows while walking on a night path, instantly whisking away all the warmth from her body.

This must be some kind of cooling measure prepared by the students of class 2-A.

But the class budget shouldn't allow for that much...

Qianhe Kagura exhaled a cloud of breath, rubbed her hands together, and then shone her flashlight forward.

What lay before her was a deep, dark corridor.

This should be the place where the podium is usually placed.

But now the podium had been moved, and both sides were blocked by white curtains stained with spotty blood.

The white curtains fluttered lightly, adorned with glaring tears, as if something would burst out from behind them at any second.

Qianhe Kagura's fingers trembled slightly.

The place before her eyes was where she lectured every day, but with the change in decor, it felt utterly alien to her.

This unfamiliar sensation made Qianhe Kagura very uncomfortable, as if her line of sight and memories were being torn asunder.

An eerie feeling spread slowly in the pit of her stomach...

A closed space, a constraining psyche, intensified psychological suggestion...

These concepts were all things Qianhe Kagura understood.

After all, each time she prepared for the bravery contest during the camp, she would review advice on haunted house setup from the internet.
