"This kind of Evil, at such close range, after being impacted by my Yang Energy, should not still be able to smile."
"..."
Feng Yao's face darkened, and he stopped talking. So what if your martial arts talent is impressive!
"We can now be fairly certain that an Evil is causing trouble. Moreover, it's highly likely an Evil that hasn't lived in the city for more than half a year. That curiosity is more like someone experiencing Virtue City for the first time; I'm inclined to believe it's her first time in any city. It's just not clear exactly what type of Evil it is."
"According to ancient records, between the graves where Yin energy is overwhelming, the energy accumulated from corpses over time transforms into Rakshasa Birds. These birds are as large as grey herons, capable of transforming and causing mischief, with a particular fondness for human eyes. Gauss felt the dense Death Qi. Combined with the information we've gathered so far, it's quite obvious, isn't it? Even someone like me, who has only skimmed through miscellaneous books for a few days, can guess it. So why can't you?"
Feng Yao shook his head.
"Although this Evil seems to enjoy joining the commotion at wedding ceremonies, is adept at transforming and beguiling people, and has a strong interest in human eyes, it's likely a Rakshasa Bird. But she didn't directly gouge out people's eyes; she seems to have only devoured something from within their eyes. Moreover, after the devouring, she didn't transform into a bird but instead appeared even more radiant and bright. These are all discrepancies with the records. And now, in the Divine Land, where is there still fertile ground that could give birth to Rakshasa Birds? Nowadays, transportation is convenient, and information spreads quickly; it's not impossible that it's something from abroad. Something foreign, borrowing local legends about Rakshasa Birds, appeared at the wedding but didn't target the newlyweds. Instead, at the wedding, it bewitched some unlucky person who couldn't resist and devoured something from within their eyes. It's not beyond the realm of possibility. If it were a Rakshasa Bird, the unlucky ones would most likely have been the newlyweds."
"Huh, are there many foreign entities?" Wen Yan was somewhat surprised.
"Actually, there are quite a few. It's just that foreign ones are less likely to compete with the local ghosts and monsters. Around here, if ghosts and monsters want to live comfortably, they need not only strength and ability but also to understand human connections and social etiquette."
"Go on."
"Take this case, for example. In the rainforest of the Amazon Basin, there's a legend of the Syekobi Tribe. There is a Fairy that, according to our classification, might be something between a Demon and a Spirit. This Fairy also excels in transformation and likes to devour the Divine Essence from people's eyes while they sleep. In minor cases, those whose essence is devoured might develop cataracts; in severe cases, blindness. According to the testimony I just received, the victim said he fell asleep just as they were about to 'get down to business.' When he woke up, he suddenly couldn't see anything. Doesn't the Evil we've encountered match the description of this Fairy more closely?"
Wen Yan thought about it; the core aspects did seem to match more closely. However, he still felt...
"Are you bringing all this up just to be argumentative? Do you also think that this Evil is a Fairy from the Amazon rainforest?"
"That's not it. Actually, in Europa, there's also a type of monster that is particularly interested in human eyes..."
"Don't get sidetracked. Which one do you think it is?"
"I believe it's a Rakshasa Bird."
"..."
Wen Yan no longer wanted to talk; Feng Yao was just being contrarian.
Feng Yao opened some files on his laptop. "Ancient records might not be completely accurate for today's situations, just as many habits and thoughts of modern people are different from those in the past. The world is constantly changing, and so are ghosts and monsters; adapting to their environment is normal. In today's Divine Land, indeed, you won't find graveyards with such a perennial concentration of corpse energy and Death Qi that haven't been dealt with. But that doesn't mean such places didn't exist a hundred years ago, or even further back. If this Evil is a Rakshasa Bird, then it definitely wasn't born in recent years."
Upon hearing this, Wen Yan, for some reason, thought of Fuyu Mountain. The only place he knew of where a massive amount of corpse energy and Death Qi had been gathering long-term, yet hadn't been razed, seemed to be where the Great Zombies of Fuyu Mountain resided. When it comes to the most suitable place for Rakshasa Birds to be born, it really did seem to be Fuyu Mountain.
He thought it over. He didn't dare to directly call Seventh Great-Uncle Master's or Grand Uncle Master's hotline. Instead, he called another person in Fuyu Mountain; this young man probably hadn't gone to bed yet.
After connecting the call, he asked around. Seventh Great-Uncle Master was still awake, so Wen Yan asked him to take the phone.
"Seventh Great-Uncle Master, I have a matter I'd like to consult you about."
"What is it? Just tell me; no need to be so polite."
Wen Yan explained the situation. It indeed seemed to stump Seventh Great-Uncle Master, who, after a moment, called over Eighth Uncle-Master Ancestor.
Eighth Uncle-Master Ancestor nodded. "We did have them in the past. However, they were stolen before they could hatch. Those of us who were too slow didn't even get to taste the eggshells."
"What???" Wen Yan was somewhat shocked.
"What do you mean, 'what?'" Eighth Uncle-Master Ancestor retorted. "When your Seventh Great-Uncle Master was young, he was incredibly greedy; he would even sneak out to find bird eggs. It was incredibly hard for us to find anything to eat. It was a rare treat to find a bird egg we could get our hands on, especially one right in our own home. How could we resist? We'd snatch it up! I might have been able to resist, but the other Great Zombies and Little Zombies couldn't."
Wen Yan exclaimed in amazement. So it turned out that the Zombie Cave in Fuyu Mountain really could give birth to Rakshasa Birds. However, those Rakshasa Birds, while still eggs, were snatched away; not even their eggshells made it out of the Zombie Cave. Thinking about it, the image of a Little Zombie's eager mouth, and how Aunt Gan had looked so delighted the last time she tasted something, gave him pause.
