Chapter 261: For the new life (7)
Monsters kept rushing into the long and deep peaks.
“Those monsters are coming again.”
The soldiers frowned as they looked over to the peaks where monsters filled the lands beneath.
“How many more are there? There’s no end to them.”
“It’s terrible. Oh, did you hear the rumor that those monsters were once humans?”
“What? That’s impossible!”
“I’d rather die than become one of those.”
“It’s not proven, but a friend of mine who works as a cleaner at the lab told me.”
The soldiers became grim. There was no smoke without fire and it was definite that something was up if there were such rumors.
“READY TO FIRE!”
“FIRE THE CANNON!”
Orders were given and the cannons began firing at the monsters. The entire peak trembled with explosions raining down on the countless monsters. After a while, when the explosions ceased, the peak was filled with smoke, only to be filled by another round of cannon fire.
Then, the last cannon fire sounded as all the monsters in the area were turned into dust. However, the soldiers knew that this wasn’t the end.
“Ugh, I hate the smell of gunpowder. It’s disgusting.”
“Isn’t it better than the rotting smell of those monsters?”
“Yeah, that’s true.”
“HEY! Stop chatting and start prepping. The big ones will be coming soon.”
“Ugh.”
The soldiers moaned at those words from the officer. Then, they witnessed giant monsters emerging through the smoke.
“Whoa, that’s big.”
“How is that size even possible?” Jinpok and Joonbum commented at the sheer size of the monster. Doral also frowned at the sight and spoke.
“Even the largest dinosaur isn’t that big. Oh, but it might be as big as the long-necked one.”
The monster was faster than expected based on its size.
“Wow, I think that’s over a hundred feet tall.”
The monster was larger than anyone had ever imagined or seen until now.
“Look! What is that?”
They then realized that there were smaller monsters at the bottom.
“Ugh, it’s like they are adults and children.”
Even those monsters were over fifty feet, but they looked smaller compared to the giant one.
“This won’t be easy this time!” Jinpok shouted with a smile and Doral frowned.
“Mmm,” Joonbum also agreed.
“What?!”
“How is that possible?!”
The soldiers all groaned and shouted in disbelief. It was fortunate for them that the other smaller monsters had already been wiped away by the cannons.
“Ready to fire!”
“Ready the cannons!”
The soldiers readied the cannons again, while the snipers were prepared to shoot. Everyone was surprised, but no one was afraid to fight.
As the large one took a step forward, the smaller ones charged towards the wall. The cannons fired and everyone started attacking. Cannons, catapults, and poison arrows all were fired without sparing anything. There were also snipers firing from all sides.
“Take cover!”
The smaller monsters began to ram into the wall, causing it to shake tremendously. The monsters also threw large rocks and trees over the wall.
“Fire- ARGH!”
The soldiers tried to dodge, but there were some who were caught in those attacks.
“Dammit!” Jinpok cursed as he took one last shot with the sniper rifle before he threw it on the ground and picked up the M60 next to it. He started firing the automatic rifle without restraint.
“AAARGH!”
“POTION!”
“MEDIC! OVER HERE!”
Soldiers shouted from everywhere for help with the wounded, while medics with the Red Cross mark on their chests quickly ran toward them to help.
Even then the attacks did not stop and all firepower was focused on the largest monster.
“WHAT!”
The monster, however, did not even seem to be slightly injured. It had burns and cuts all over its body, but they weren’t critical or serious enough to stop or kill it.
“That one’s tough,” Doral said as he shook his head. The monster roared in rage and began to move faster, kicking away the smaller monsters in its path.
“It’s coming!”
“RUN!”
The signal horns for retreating were sounded.
“We can’t block that attack! Get away!” Jinpok shouted as he pulled the trigger on the rifle. The cannons fired again as the monster quickly approached the wall. The horn signaling to retreat kept repeating, but only a handful of soldiers were retreating.
“Your Majesty! You must flee!”
“Please!”
The Ainos Guards shouted at Joonbum. It was the first time he had faced such a crisis in this war. The reason he was always at the forefront in fights was because he believed in his advanced weapons and his improved physical traits, but not this time. The monster was charging towards the wall, and it was evident that it would destroy the wall the moment it hit.
