Chapter 69 Dormitory Building Elevator

Lin Yi's heart was suddenly filled with intense doubt, but just as this question formed, his train of thought abruptly shifted like flotsam in a drain, harshly twisting the train of thought that was about to unfold.

"Forget it, don't worry about it now."

"Just get to the dormitory, then think about it."

Like a cigarette that had just sparked, gently pinched by two fingers before being snuffed out abruptly, Lin Yi shook his head slightly and muttered to himself:

"Even if this damn elevator in the dormitory turns into King Kong today, I don't want to care."

Following the sluggish flow of people, he continued to push forward, quickly reaching the stairs in front of the dormitory building and entering into a brightly lit corridor.

As he stepped onto the stairs, he didn't forget to look down at the moss growing in the cracks of the steps.

The entire corridor was curved in structure, resembling the base of the hula hoop-like construction of the dormitory building.

In the corridor, there was an elevator entrance every three to five meters.

The doors of the elevator entrances kept opening and closing, admitting about ten people each time, and then after the doors shut, within three to five seconds, they opened again.

And after the doors opened, inside was another spacious and empty elevator entrance.

The people who had gone in before had disappeared without a trace, almost as if they had been devoured by the elevator entrance.

Walking through the corridor, Lin Yi noticed lines of text in front of each elevator:

[Each elevator has a capacity of ten people.]

Turned out each elevator indeed took in ten people.

It was soon his turn, but he happened to be the tenth person for the elevator, so he chose to wait for the next one, leaving the spot for the student behind him and Wei Liang.

He glanced at the number of the elevator entrance.

"Elevator-23"

Then he withdrew his gaze and calmly scanned the ten people inside the elevator.

The ten people had different expressions; seven looked numb and carried nothing, clearly old students, while the remaining three had backpacks, some even holding a handbag, looking anxious and their eyes wandering around the interior of the elevator, obviously new students moving in.

" Bang... clang!"

The doors of the elevator shut in front of Lin Yi with the swish of the wind, and with that final "clang," Lin Yi couldn't help but feel an indescribable sensation.

This feeling was somewhat like when he casually pulled the door shut as he left the classroom, also similar to traversing from one area to another. Broadly speaking, it was a weird sense of disjunction, but looking at it closely, he couldn't quite put his finger on it.

At this moment, the inside of the elevator entrance emitted a distinct sound of machinery at work.

This sound was unlike any mechanical sound he had heard before in his life; it wasn't like those in sci-fi movies either. If anything, it sounded more like the noises of traps in the Snake Spirit's lair from "The Calabash Brothers," with some bubbling sounds added to it.

Something like gurgle, clack, clack, clack...

Then, "Bang," the elevator door opened, and sure enough, there was no one inside.

With a touch of curiosity, Lin Yi followed Wei Liang into the elevator.

This was a very traditional passenger elevator, more reminiscent of those in high-end commercial buildings than a dormitory.

Four LED lights were fixed on the ceiling of the elevator's interior, and on each side of the elevator door, there was a panel with floor buttons.

The buttons on the floors consisted of simple "Open," "Close," numbers "1"~"39," and several traditional symbols, like a yellow horn and a red "↑"... What were these symbols?

Lin Yi looked at the "↑" button, which was covered by a plastic shield with a large "×" on it.

Lin Yi was taken aback.

The location of this button was very subtle; according to the order of the buttons, it seemed to represent a non-existent... 40th floor.

The other eight people each pressed the buttons for the floors their rooms were on, and seeing that Lin Yi was observing the panel, Wei Liang took the initiative to press "14."

Their dormitory reservation was "1414," meaning room 14 on the 14th floor.

There was a rationale behind this dormitory reservation.

Theoretically, for safety and rapid evacuation considerations, when choosing a dormitory floor, one should ensure they could leave quickly via the stairwell in case the elevators were out of order, so the lower the floor, the better.

But there were not a few with this consideration, so the dormitories below the 10th floor were almost completely booked, and many people did not want to share with strangers to fill the gaps, so they gradually expanded their options.

And the "1414" that Lin Yi and his group chose was not in high demand because it sounded unlucky, making it a rare vacancy.

Of course, if they didn't choose "1414," securing a six-person dormitory would mean going to the 35th floor and above.

As for above the 35th floor... in the event of an elevator problem, climbing down would probably be harder than jumping.

After pressing the button, Wei Liang moved aside, while Lin Yi silently shifted to the side, squeezing into a corner by the door.

Although the elevator had a capacity for ten people, once ten people were aboard, the remaining space was not crowded.

Quickly, Lin Yi keenly sensed some vibrations.

These vibrations were very subtle, like the breath of wind in the elevator shaft brushing against the elevator car, causing a tremble.

Yet Lin Yi faintly felt something was off, that sound of the wind... it just didn't seem normal.
