Thronebound Summoner

Chapter 96: Dawnflame Spirit

Fay ate quickly, then hurried off to search for aether crystals to check the three kids' elements.

Truthfully, he should have done this sooner, but he wanted to make sure all the adults and able workers got their creatures first.

As for the kids, they didn't need to get a creature too early.

If it were one like Grin or Jolt, for example, it would need to eat other creatures to sustain itself or rely on Fay to provide enough aether.

But there were only three of them, so he could help if needed.

Also, they wouldn't get more than one creature even if they could. He couldn't support that well, maybe Mira… because she was his sister.

"Are you three done?"

Fay returned with two sets of all the normal and second-tier stones. He didn't have any of the dangerous third-tier ones, and even if he had, he wouldn't give one, even to Mira.

"Yes! I want to know if I can have another friend for Jiggz!"

Mira, with her new fairy-like slime beside her, gently poked Jiggz with her finger.

"Alright, you'll go first. Here are seven stones. Put your hand over each one until I tell you to."

Fay activated his spirit vision, allowing him to see the myriad glowing colors radiating from each stone. He also observed his sister's natural spirit aura and how it interacted with the stones.

She went through them slowly: Fire, Water, Wind, Land, Ice, Lightning, and finally Shadow. Yet none of the seven responded to her touch.

"Well, you weren't compatible with any of these… but don't cry, okay? We still have more."

As he saw her eyes beginning to well up, Fay gently placed the next set of stones beside the ones he had already laid out.

She was a little slower, her eagerness lessening now, as if trying to make sure one of the new stones would be hers.

She moved through them in order: Illusion, Dream, Spirit, Sound, and Metal.

Mira was about to get even more depressed before Fay smiled.

"Relax. Look, I saved the best one for last…"

Fay took out a Halo Shard, a gem aligned with the light element. It was golden-white and glowed faintly.

Mira tapped it quickly, as if she didn't trust it, before pausing as she felt something. She moved her hand a little slower the second time, and a soft glow began to rise from her palm.

"This one!"

Fay sighed in relief. He had expected it to be either this or Spirit. Since the latter hadn't reacted, he was glad this one had.

"Alright, it worked! But let's wait before you use it. I only have one, and I need to see if Tomo or Rina can use it, okay?"

Fay quickly picked the gem back up and had each of the twins hold it, only to find that neither one reacted to it.

"Fine. Here—use it. It'll be yours, so remember: concentrate and start imagining what you want it to become."

She already had a fairy, so Fay wondered what kind of creature she would imagine from the new stone. He had to supply her with extra aether first; unlike him, she hadn't received any aether piercings yet.

He wondered if she might be able to avoid getting them altogether; he was sure there could possibly be another method.

There was still time to ask Mirage about that later.

While Fay was lost in thought about his sister's problem and holding her hand to provide the aether she needed, Mira was fully focused. She looked determined, like she wanted the best creature possible and was pouring all her imagination into the effort.

Suddenly, a flash of white light erupted before them, and from it, a small rabbit leapt out on its two hind legs.

Its fur was as white as snow, its features matching those of a bunny from before the mutations back on Earth.

"I guess… Is it good?" Fay said, hesitating as he pulled his hand back and looked over the new creature.

In terms of appearance, it was normal in most aspects.

Black eyes, long ears, a soft pelt, nothing about it stood out physically.

Fay narrowed his eyes. Maybe something about it was different magically?

He activated his spirit vision.

"Wow… it's a bundle of energy…"

It was exactly that which made things strange.

In spirit vision, the creature didn't have a solid form; it was just that, a radiant bundle of energy.

This was the first time Fay had ever seen something like it. Every creature up until now had looked nearly identical between spirit vision and normal sight. But this one… this one seemed to shift or veil its true magical shape, as if it chose how it was seen.

He was looking forward to seeing how it grew stronger, especially since it didn't even have a defined body.

"Well then, Rina, how about you come here? Ladies first, right Tomo?"

The two kids were still shy around him, but he didn't mind. In fact, he found it kind of cute.

"There's no need to fear, Fay, Rina, he's my brother!"

Mira, who had already begun hugging her creature, had started calling it Lumi. She was now practically crushing the poor thing in a big hug, which made Rina react.

"I want one too! A bunny like that!"

The small black-haired girl, looking especially cute as she said it, seemed to forget her earlier hesitation and rushed toward Fay, eager to receive a creature just as adorable as Mira's.

Fay followed the same process as before, letting her slide her hand over the elemental stones one by one until two of them began to react with power.

He paused.

He needed to choose which of the two she would use, but decided to let Tomo come forward and test them first before handing anything out.

"Tomo, your turn. Come here and place your hand over them."

The boy was the truly shy one between the two. He took much longer to approach Fay, even as both Mira and Rina began pushing him forward.

"Come on, you just have to put your hand over it. Nothing will happen."

Fay waited a few seconds, patient, as the boy finally did as he was told.
