The calm inside the church hall was completely at odds with what Azad, Xandra, and I knew was taking place outside.
More on instinct than anything else I rose away from the table and walked out to the main hallway.
Azad and Xandra understood the situation immediately, and stayed close behind me.
The sound of gunfire, and tyre screeching had drawn close enough that even people inside the building had started to hear the first rumblings.
We hurried out of the main entrance and down the church steps, until we were standing in the middle of Hull Road.
A moment later the chaos, as if the road ahead were a stage, burst into view from the right.
Slow! I thought, willing my perception of time to a crawl.
There was a tall woman with snow-white skin sailing backwards through the air, and my first impression was that this woman had a statue-like quality to her skin. She wore a costume from neck to ankle to wrist which was black with large red-rose patterning.
Bullets were soaring through the air after her, several of which she had already successfully avoided.
But there was also something else. There was a cylindrical blue-hued device, like some mad scientist's idea of a portable fish tank about the size of a shoe-box, soaring through the air straight for the rose-patterned-woman.
To the furthest right three motorcycles roared into view at a snail's pace. Atop the motorbikes were their drivers, as well as men sat on the back holding weapons.
The riders of the motorcycles weren't wearing helmets, and looked to be of African descent.
Whilst the drivers were focused on handling the motorcycle at high speed, the riders on the back had their handguns drawn and firing.
The rear-rider of the middle-most motorcycle had what looked to be a rocket launcher in his grip, from which what looked like smoke was rising out of the front and back ends from being freshly fired.
Is that what the strange device is? I thought, Is it a bomb?
The device lit up like a lightbulb and then all at once it burst from the inside. Bit by bit what appeared to be an ever-increasing-in-size mass of flesh sprouted like a flower out of the broken device.
The growing mass of flesh latched onto the snow-white-skinned costumed-woman as if it were some octopus made entirely out of tumour-like growths.
And then time snapped back to normal.
The woman sailed to the left out of view, and the men on their motorcycles continued in their pursuit.
ZOON!
ZOON!
ZOON!
ZOON!
The noise of them passing was aggravatingly loud to my heightened hearing. There were four motorcycles in total, with two men per vehicle.
And just like that the chaos had come and shot out of view to continue further along the left incline up Winchester Road, in the direction of the train lines.
I shot a look at Azad and Xandra.
"Looks like they're chasing a Mouse," I said, "People are going to be in danger."
You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.
It was both a statement and a question from me.
"This is it," said Azad, "Our time to shine."
Xandra locked eyes with me, and said, "You're call."
I smiled, feeling thankful again to have Xandra and Azad with me and on the same page.
Between Azad and Xandra I could see the tall metal fence at the end of the road, behind which was a large private field.
"Alright, let's go," I said.
And I took off sprinting, and Azad and Xandra sprinted after me. I chanced one quick look over my shoulder and saw people had only just started to hurry out of the church to catch a glimpse of the commotion which had already passed. Nathan had raced out too, and was looking in the direction of where the chaos had come and gone. Coming full circle and reuniting with my best friend would have to wait.
With a quick leap Azad, Xandra, and I moved over the metal fence, avoiding the upper spikes and wire mesh, and landed on the freshly mowed field grass on the other side, and then darted further along the right-side of the field out of sight of anyone on Hull Road.
I came to a stop once I was sure nobody could see the three of us. Rather than say anything, I took off my rucksack (and Azad and Xandra removed theirs) and we threw our rucksacks over to an overgrown patch of foliage over by the metal fence.
And then I willed for Slip to get us suited up fast.
Slip responded so fast it was clear he had already anticipated the request.
The Resin-Visor reformed on my face. And resin, controlled by Slip in order to be intricately woven like hundreds of silk strands, shot out of the pores of my skin. Soon, as if hundreds of invisible spiders were busily working away at super-speed, my new resin-suit formed across my body.
Every inch of my body was covered in the light-blue resin suit, with the exception of the lower half of my face, and my head of beyond-ear-length messy Eighties maverick style hair.
The newly formed Resin-suit was perfectly imperfect; having some parts covered in a thicker layer of resin-strands, which created the effect of deeper blues contrasting the criss-crossed light ones. And here and there were small thick patches of tangled resin, particularly around the armpits which created a web-like curtain about the size of my palms.
During this time Azad and Xandra suited up too.
What looked like a solid armour-like chestpiece of gold-with-silver formed on Azad's torso. His bronzed and muscled arms, much like when he had ripped off the sleeves of his hoodie back at the mansion, were not covered in his newly fashioned armour chest-and-backpiece. The general shape of the armour reminded me more of a golden turtle-shell than something a Roman general might wear.
Azad's lower half, that being his silver-hued running trackies, were unchanged. The only other difference was the three extensions from the bottommost part of the golden-turtle-armour which were like triangle-shaped flaps; two covering his outer-thighs, and the one in the middle protecting his crotch area. It wasn't hard to see the Mega Fighter's M inspiration in the design.
Azad finished up by reforming his Clang-cowl, which, again, was gold-with-imperfect-silver cracks like a lightning bolt across the middle. Much of his messy oily black hair was still on display too.
And Xandra had grown back her raccoonish features; raccoonish-tipped nose, longer fangs, and elongated ears included, on top of her Snap anime-style eyes, along with a grayish tone to her skin which only seemed to make an appearance when readied for a combat situation.
She looked to be wearing a complete ink-coloured suit from neck to toe. Around the waist she had formed what appeared to be a skirt which reached down to just above her knees. The rubbery-ink coloured shape around her feet had formed into a slight heel shape.
The only parts of her not covered were her face and hands. The same elongated nails had grown from her fingertips again.
There wasn't time to truly soak in the surreal moment of the three of us fully suited-up and ready to throw ourselves into danger to protect the innocent.
The best we could do was an amazed look from one to another at our complete costumes, and then I took the lead and broke into a superhuman sprint along the upper field.
Snap and Clang sprang into action behind me.
Very quickly steam rose away from Clang, as he smoothly entered into his Tension-cooling state.
And right after Snap sprang forwards with immense hurtling speed thanks to the springy power bestowed to her from her full-body-rubber-suit – which clearly was using the same concept of giving her increased speed and power like the ink-rubber spheres last night, but instead was being channelled through the entirety of the suit.
And lastly there was me.
With Slip's assistance with the mental load required to make all the aspects of the power work in perfect tandem, the resin-board blossomed outwards from the soles of my suit-clad feet. And a long resin-staff formed from the palm of one hand and extended to a length equal to my height.
After one last jump as the resin-board finished forming beneath me, I landed, and the super-slipperiness of the board sent me hurtling at high speed across the field grass.
Pap! Pap!
Like last time, resin-threads shot out of the exploding ends of the regenerative resin-staff, the threads shot forwards and connected to the nearby metal fence to my right fast enough to zip me forwards at an ever increasing speed.
We were on our way.
