Mage Legend

Chapter 746: Legends and Legends in Legends Chapter Thirty-Six Division of Labor

"Littlefinger, you're not seriously suggesting I take care of that Archbishop Pate, are you?" Lynch only needed to look at the halfling's expression to know what was on his mind. "Although this idea is indeed feasible, I'm not an assassin."

Felps blinked twice, suppressing a laugh while observing Lynch's expression, trying to find any sign of complaint or grievance. Yet the mage remained calm and serious while speaking. The halfling finally sighed, "It seems you've seriously considered this plan, but you haven't fallen for it. Of course, I wouldn't have you act as an assassin, sneaking into the core of the Pate Temple to plunge a dagger into that poor fellow's heart."

Lynch nodded, understanding what Littlefinger meant. Since the True Path Sect was going to execute this plan, they certainly couldn't place their hopes on him, the legendary mage. The infiltration and substitution plan must have already been scheduled, and even now, there might be some assassins lurking around Bishop Pate. They wouldn't use daggers or crossbows; a cup of scented tea with a few special drops could solve all the trouble.

On the other hand, Felps clearly needed his help. So Lynch said, "Littlefinger, do you want me to help cover up this action? Or do you think there are things that can't be hidden at this stage?"

The halfling nodded and then pulled out a small gray pouch from his boot. Judging by the silver fine lines forming patterns on it, it was a simplified version of a Spatial Bag. Since the True Path sect could replicate magic wands that emit strong acid, crafting something like a Spatial Bag was nothing difficult.

Felps carefully untied the strings on the pouch and then extended two fingers to pinch out an item. A golden badge gleamed brightly in his hand, flashing with a burst of color. The halfling immediately tossed it away, throwing it into the nearby drainage ditch.

"A nice trap," the mage said. "Not aimed at the user, but rather to protect the secrets inside from leaking out. Now I'm very interested to know what exactly you've discovered."

"In the basement of Archbishop Pate, there's a black mirror, but it doesn't reflect any shadows. At the same time, we found many strange runes around it, most of which we couldn't decode," Littlefinger said while pulling out a scroll from the Spatial Bag. "On this is recorded those symbols and drawings. Our people tried everything but couldn't use this magic item like the actual bishop does. If careless, just this oversight would cause us to lose everything we've achieved."

Lynch took the scroll and said, "If what I'm thinking matches what you've discovered, then things might get a bit tricky. Let me have a look..."

"Indeed, this is exactly what I thought, though smaller," Lynch unfolded the scroll and then took out his own notes for verification. "This is a portal used by the snake-men for teleportation, allowing them to transport supplies and troops everywhere. The only question now is whether the archbishop is controlled by the snake-men or if someone else is lurking in the Pate Temple?"

Upon hearing this news, Littlefinger was not very surprised. Members of the True Path Sect had long disguised themselves as snake-men, infiltrating their encampments and discovering this item. And it was due to suspicion that the current Pate Temple was associated with snake-men that the True Path Sect decided to adopt the method of stealthy substitution. The halfling crossed his arms behind his head, looking up at Lynch, "Can you decode these things?"

"You wouldn't need to say it; I was going to do that," Lynch placed the items back into his bosom and then said, "The scroll is safer with me than with you, and I really need this information. Besides that, is there anything else I can help you with?"

Felps clapped his hands vigorously, creating a "snap" sound, and listened intently to the echo in the tunnel. This complex underground sewer system was like a man who had eaten too much, obviously suffering from bloating, and could only emit muffled sounds. The halfling took out a crossbow from his chest, shook his head, and then put it back. He pointed to the shadow at the corner of the tunnel, "Lynch, can you kill that rat? I think it's eavesdropping on our conversation."

"Do you think it might be a druid transformed into a rat to spy on us?" The mage said this aloud, yet still threw a fireball over. The explosion's flash immediately illuminated the passageway like daylight, and the heat wave swept through, sending all the bugs scurrying from the shadows. By the time the air around them finally stopped its fierce motion, and the charred rat corpse didn't transform into any humanoid creature, he still looked at Felps somewhat puzzled.
