'm currently sitting on the edge of the wooden walls as I gazed out at the City, It was a nice City, and it was pretty clear that it was the City the Elves had a stake in developing. There were massive trees and plenty of garden everywhere.
A good portion of all the buildings were even intertwined with the trees.
Very appealing.
But I do wonder if it was them that spurred on the idea of creating an empire here.
A few minutes after arriving and getting a report on the situation of the City, I kind of set all my Infernals loose into the City, with a few different instructions.
First of all, I needed them to quell the chaos that had ensued after a good portion of the Cities fighting force was slaughtered by my clan members. I don't blame them for it, if you pick up a weapon to kill someone, then you need to be prepared to be killed yourself.
Now past the chaos quelling stuff, I tasked them with figuring out what led to the City being rebellious in the first place. If it turned out to just be the work of an idiot then fine, but I wanted to make sure something else wasn't at play. Like the demons for example.
Anyway, there were also tasked with finding me some candidates for the now empty City Lord position. I had already removed their predecessor from his position on a permanent basis. Which meant the City was already under my control and simply waiting for me to appoint a new City Lord.
It wasn't until a few hours later that Vrusha finally appeared next to me on the wall.
"The situation in the City has stabilized Patriarch."
"Sounds good. Any word on the cause of the rebellion?"
Of course, we questioned the City Lord before I removed him from his position, but he didn't say anything that pointed to a different reason other than him just wanting his own empire and not liking me.
"Nothing in particular was found to disprove the previous City Lord's claims. Though it appears that majority of the City was only recently convinced that a war for their freedom was needed.
It doesn't appear that the consensus to fight to the death was shared with the City as a whole."
Hm. Well that's a bit interesting. I wonder how he managed to convince them that war was the answer here.
Smells fishy.
Something to keep an eye on then.
"And my new City Lord?"
"Two different options have been identified Patriarch. One of them is apparently a 'Duke' and in charge of the City's finances, while the other is a 'Count', and responsible for policing the City itself."
You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author.
Dukes and Counts...they were really going all in with this whole empire thing.
Honestly I'm a little taken aback...Dukes and Counts. I know we are all being called Lords by the System, but they really took it all the way there.
Well let's meet them.
"Bring them here."
He bowed, vanished, and then reappeared with two people in his hands.
Two older individuals, a man and a woman.
Once Vrusha placed them on top of the walls they stood up and waited patiently behind me, clearly having some shaky nerves.
I continued gazing at the City for a few moments longer as I got my thoughts in order and then stood up to face them.
"So, a Duke and a Count. Which one's which?"
The man raised his hand as if asking permission to speak.
Damn.
What the hell did Vrusha do to them?
Anyway I nodded at him.
"My name is Reed Watson My Lord and I was once the Duke of this City."
My Lord huh…
I took a peek over at Vrusha who looked as if he wasn't involved in whatever was going on here.
He definitely had something to do with this.
"And you must be the Count, your name?"
"My name is Evangline Van Kirk My Lord."
Well.
At least her name sounds like that of an old European noble. Maybe being a count is pretty fitting for her. Well, we'll find out here in a second.
"Nice to meet both of you. My name is Raizen and I am the City Lord of Black Cove City, and the soon to be the Official Planetary Lord of Earth. As both of you are likely already aware, the previous City Lord of this City is no more.
"Which means another one is needed.
"Now I'm told both of you are likely competent enough for the role.
"Does anyone want it? And this isn't a trick question. This City still needs to be run by a City Lord and I would rather not have to assign one at random or being someone from another City to handle the position.
"So, who wants it?"
Both of them looked at each other in confusion for a few moments before sinking into their own separate states of deep thought.
I wasn't going to stand here forever as they thought about it, but it was a big decision so I could at least give them a few minutes to come to a conclusion.
Maybe even a few hours if they really needed it.
Turns out that the extra time wouldn't be necessary.
"I would like to accept the position of City Lord."
"And why is that?"
"I believe I can steer this City in a better direction after what just happened. Under your leadership of course."
"That works for me. Evangeline Van Kirk, you are now the City Lord of the Gaia Empire. My people will be here for a couple days more to help you settle in to your new position. Make good use of the time."
"Thank My Lord."
She gave a short bow and I nodded before turning towards Vrusha.
"You can take them back now. Make sure to assist the new City Lord."
"Yes Patriarch."
And just like that we stayed in the Gaia Empire for an additional two days.
There was a slight bit of discontent from some of the more established folks in the City but Vrusha made sure there was no room for discussion regarding the position of the City lord.
It would be miss Evangeline and that was final.
Unless she was bad at her job of course.
Anyway we helped her by giving her a concrete backing and allowing others to see that she had the type of backing that could absolutely destroy any form of opposition in the City.
And to prove that I decided to leave a squad of 10 Infernals in the City. All 10 were Core Formation.
A bit overkill maybe, but it was also due to my suspicion behind the actions of the previous City Lord.
The Infernals staying behind weren't guards for the new City Lord.
They had a mission and also represented my authority in the City. Plus they were only to stay for a month or so. After that they would return to the Infernal District.
In the meantime, the rest of us were currently heading north.
It was finally time to head to the last City and complete my mission of unifying Earth under one banner.
My banner.
