Dubian Che lay on the sofa, spacing out for nearly twenty minutes already.
When the clock hands pointed to two-thirty, he finally couldn't resist getting up.
"Thump, thump, thump!" He knocked on the bedroom door with a bit more force.
"Misses," said Dubian Che, "we see each other every day, so whatever clothes you wear doesn't matter."
"Come in," Jiutiao Meijie's voice called.
"Can I?" Dubian Che tested the waters, ensuring there was no argument erupting inside before cautiously opening the door.
On the 2 meter by 2.2 meter bed, a supersized dolphin plushie lay obediently.
Does it actually sleep with Kiyono Lin every day?
Dubian Che wondered whether he should assassinate the thing.
Glancing around and not finding the two of them, he assumed they were in a hidden walk-in closet.
Dubian Che picked up a book from beside the bed, "Complete Short Stories of Hemingway," and sat down in front of the floor-to-ceiling window bathed in afternoon sunlight.
The simple style single sofa was very comfortable, and in front of him was a triangular low table, on which sat a candle-like fragrance diffuser.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling window, the sky of Shinjuku District was brilliantly blue.
Looking down, the streetside trees sparkled under the sunlight.
Dubian Che found a comfortable position and, while imagining Kiyono Lin reading here, began flipping through the book at random.
After finishing each story, he glanced at the black dial on his left wrist, and when there were two minutes left until three o'clock, the two misses finally came out.
"'I'm all out of steam,'" he flipped through the book with a rustling sound, "'I feel utterly burnt out inside. I don't know, I don't know what to say.'"
"Feeling listless could be solved with a nap," Kiyono Lin said.
"Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong!" Dubian Che snapped the book shut—not too loudly— "You should say, 'Isn't love exciting?', and then I answer you..."
"We let you in here to give us your opinions, not for you to recite," Jiutiao Meijie interrupted him bluntly.
"I've been waiting almost an hour," Dubian Che expressed his slight grievance.
"Too short?"
"Too— Short!" Not only Kiyono Lin and Jiutiao Meijie, but even little girls playing in park sandboxes, knew Dubian Che was lying.
Kiyono Lin gave him an amused glance and asked, "Since you couldn't wait, take a look at how we dressed up."
Dubian Che assessed them; both posed prettily, making it impossible for him to care about the actual clothes for a moment.
Kiyono Lin had traded her V-neck thin sweater and curve-accentuating jeans for a different outfit, while Jiutiao Meijie had switched into a long white dress, tights gone, suddenly sporting a pure look.
"It's not about whether it looks good or bad, I admit, my previous assessments of you were too low," Dubian Che said.
Both laughed at the same time, Jiutiao Meijie throwing him a disapproving look, laughing as she said, "Smooth talker."
"For me," Dubian Che stood up, returning "Complete Short Stories of Hemingway" to the bedside, "as long as there's nothing inappropriate showing, it's a pretty outfit."
"I wasn't wrong, was I?" Kiyono Lin said to Jiutiao Meijie.
"I figured as much," Jiutiao Meijie glanced at Dubian Che.
"Huh?" Dubian Che looked back and forth between the two of them, puzzled, "What's up?"
"You don't need to know," Kiyono Lin headed to a mirror, pinched her sleeve cuffs, and turned her body to check her outfit.
"Meijie," Dubian Che put on a look as if he couldn't bear being left out, pointing between her and himself, "the two of us, we're on the same side."
"Mm, we're on the same side," Jiutiao Meijie said with a smiling face, "It's nothing, just earlier while trying on clothes, we talked about you. Lin said you're just as selfish, possessive as me; as proud as her; as obsessive as Mayi Asuka; as gentle as Xiaoquan Aonai."
"Do I have multiple personalities?"
"And you like to talk nonsense, using it to hide your true self," Kiyono Lin added from in front of the mirror.
"At least deny the multiple personalities first," Dubian Che reminded.
"Let's go," Kiyono Lin twirled briskly in front of the mirror and moved toward Jiutiao Meijie.
"Is there anything fun at Liberty Hill?" Jiutiao Meijie asked.
"Liberty Hill is touted as the dessert paradise of Island Country, famous all over the world. Within a radius of five hundred meters, numerous dessert shops and cafes densely pack the area, and many renowned grandmasters have set up shop here, making it essentially a battlefield for desserts," Kiyono Lin said.
"Read that from which book?" Jiutiao Meijie was certain.
"Mobile app guides," Kiyono Lin said with a hint of satisfaction in her tone upon the other's mistaken guess.
The two of them chatted and left the bedroom straight away.
In front of the bedroom door, Jiutiao Meijie looked back with a kind smile at Dubian Che, who had been diagnosed with multiple personalities by Doctor Kiyono:
"Do you plan to stay alone in the bedroom, then lie on the bed, and vigorously sniff her lingering scent?"
"How could I possibly do something so seedy?!"
"Then come out already!" The transformation of Jiutiao Meijie's expression, from smiling to icy, took only half a second.
"Oh."
Kiyono Lin elegantly covered her mouth with her hand, silently giggling as she watched Dubian Che's scolded look.
'These two really are both sadists.' Watching their backs, Dubian Che grew more certain.
Dubian Che didn't consider himself a masochist, it was just that Jiutiao Meijie was a sadist, and although Kiyono Lin wasn't that obvious, she had such tendencies deep down.
It was just that his beloved was a sadist, and to match them, he had become the man he was today.
'What great love.' On the way to Liberty Hill, the two misses chatted, while Dubian Che idly entertained himself with wild thoughts.
Liberty Hill, located at the boundary between Setagaya District and Muehoku District, was by definition a place with many small rolling hills.
