She pulled her head out of the stairway and waved over William. William had no idea what Amanda was so incessant over, but they had agreed to keep their voices down to a minimum so he walked over to where she was.
"I think I found a way into the tower," Amanda said trying to be as quiet as possible.
"Yeah? Great job Amanda! Is it through there?" William asked looking at the door that Amanda had her foot in so it wouldn't close.
The young woman nodded, "Yeah, but… well, I don't like the look of it. See for yourself."
William looked troubled hearing that with as much trepidation as Amanda said it with. He moved forward and stuck his head in the door. Looking up, he knew exactly why Amanda had reservations about that path. That would make the perfect canalizing ambush site, and with gunfire from above they would all be dead or wounded within moments. Although the stairway was solid concreate and you could only see up if you looked up in between the various stairways. It was bad, but it could have been worse.
William called over Ansuya and Aceso. Other pack alphas from the City under the Rock joined them at the door.
William pointed up the stairway, "it's not the best option but it might be the only one."
Aceso in werewolf form tilted her head, "I for one would much rather be fighting than cautiously hunting and sneaking around in someone else's territory."
"Going up that stairway might well be the death of us all, and then so much for your revenge for the loss of one of our cities," said a Spanish Shape shifter Alpha.
Suddenly they all heard gunshots ring out on the far side of the garage. William flinched away from the stairway door.
Ansuya mentioned "it seems the battle has already started. Are we to wait down here till it's all over?"
William shook his head and shifted into his werewolf form, "I will take point. We stick to the plan, floor by floor. If we minimize our time in the scary stairwell, it will reduce the chances of vampires getting the drop on us and being able to use their ambush site, agreed?" William looked around at the group of leaders around him, slowly they all nodded, except his alpha.
"I'm Alpha, it's my place to lead and take point," she said.
Stolen story; please report.
William shook his head, "No, Aceso it isn't. It's your job to make sure we survive. I'm your enforcer, you saved my life more times than I care to count, and this is my job. Let me be your shield." Without waiting for a response William headed up the stairwell.
Aceso was right behind him and the rest of her pack then Ansuya and the packs from the City under the Rock made their way into and up the stairway, keeping a good distance between them. They would all get to the first floor eventually, bunching up just made them an easier target, and they were going to make this as hard on the vamps as possible.
Willaim ran up the stairs taking four steps at a time and kicked in the first door he came to. He rolled into the room and crouched behind the first thing he saw, which was a flimsy office style cubicle.
Aceso walked in behind William and surveyed the room. Nicolas, Charles, Katherine, and Amanda all followed behind their Alpha and looked around. William stood up from behind the cubicle wall and looked around the perfectly empty office room.
It was like something out of a movie, flimsy grey padded freestanding walls that wrapped around desks with computers on them. The cabinets were grey with stainless steel handles and the desks were made of cheap fabricated wood. It was everything you could possibly want from an office floor, except of course people to use the various working stations. And by the look of things, this place hadn't been used for anything for a very long time.
"Great," Amanda muttered, "at least we know where we can get some cheap office furniture if we ever wanted to open up a new headquarters here in the city."
William looked around and saw three doors along the various walls of the room. Aceso nodded and pointed to the north, "we'll take the north side, Ansuya, would you please take Dutch and Thom and a few Rock packs to that left hand side door, and the rest of you go the right."
She got acknowledgments from everyone before she moved, William was already halfway to the door by the time she and the rest of the pack moved. Nicolas moved to the rear-guard position as Amanda and Katherine took up places behind Aceso. They had all shifted into werewolf form before they scaled the stairs, and now their claws softly clicked on the hard tiles of the floor.
William moved to the door, and turned the knob, it almost surprised him that this door was locked. The first locked door of the day. He wrenched the door knob down, breaking it, and ripped it out of the door, before he shoved the door open, stepping back behind the wall as he did so.
There was no light beyond the open the door, he peeked around the door jam and saw a heavily shadowed hallway, that stretched on for about fifty yards before ending in what looked to be a solid wall. The walls of the hallway were smooth and off-white colored. The doors were dark brown wood pattern. He doubted that vampires would keep any kind of wood anywhere near them, so he assumed it was cosmetic only, and probably made with some kind of metal.
He moved into the dark hallway and crept silently down the hall, as the rest of his pack joined him. As he approached the first door to his left, he was aware of the eerie silence of the place. They had heard gunfire earlier, but since then there had been nothing. He tried the door handle and again it was locked.
