It was still dark. The sun was set to rise soon but the sky was not touched by the sun's light yet. She saw them come out of the trees as wraiths and ghosts.
She raised her fists in a fighting stance, "Who's there? Identify yourself?"
"It's me Keva, Alrick? We met the other day. I was going to bring some of my friends to help you out with a parasite problem." Alrick stepped out of the trees and in the dim light Keva was able to see the older man and recognized him.
"You scared me half to death, Alrick. I was actually starting to think that you might not show up," Keva said with a smile.
"I did mention that I traveled one hundred miles in deep winter for a friend. And like I told you before, we need the exercise," Alrick said with a laugh. He was joined by the rest of the group he led with hearty laughter.
"You might be saying something a little different when I show you the road we'll be traveling," Keva said. "Are you ready, or do you need some time?"
Alrick smiled as the morning brightened around them before the sunrise. "Keva, we're as ready as we'll ever be. After you."
Keva nodded. "Stick close and hold on to your butts."
Keva felt for the membrane in between this plane and the Whyte Plain, and pushed. It felt slick and it took her a while to get any grip on that mental field. Feeling the weight of the people around her and the two planes fighting against her. She gritted her teeth and gave herself a boost of adrenaline to push against the membrane.
She stumbled forward, finding herself in the Whyte Plain. Not only that she had managed to bring the berserkers through as well. This was the first time she had tried anything like this. It had been hard, a lot harder than Michelle had ever alluded to, but she did it.
"Alrick, did all your people make it?"
Keva looked over to see the berserkers look all around them. Startled might be a word to describe how they were acting. Some were trying to see through the dim misty reaches of the plain, while others were picking there boots up out of the ground fog that permeated this place to check for water or something else, like they had stepped in something unpleasant.
"OK, everyone, we are going to move fast, and as quiet as we can. It's going to be a bit of a run to get where we're going. This place will mess with your vision, your hearing, even the feel of your own skin. If anyone starts to hear a buzzing in your ears or if your skin starts to crawl or become itchy, I need to know immediately."
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Alrick smiled at her but nodded, and the rest of the berserkers nodded as well.
"I wish I could explain to you just how deadly this place is. Hopefully you wont have to discover that. I will lead you through this, stay close and stay focused. If you let your mind start to wonder, this place will find a way to kill you. Does anyone have any questions?"
She was answered with head shakes. She wished she could believe them. She had seen veteran Shape shifters die and be corrupted and seduced by this place. She would get these people through this, she had to.
"Stick close, let's move"
With that Keva took off at a run, the rest of the berserkers swarmed behind her. The speed at which they moved made it feel like there was a soft wind blowing past them. Her hair started to wave gently behind her and Alrick sped up to match her speed running side by side with her. He smiled at her but said nothing. Keva felt better making this trek with others. This place was a long dark and dim place that could sap all will from you, if you were alone, it only made it worse. But with companions
She seemed to be lighter and let herself run with a little more speed. She had her bond to sense where the rest of her pack was and it served as a beacon for her to follow. It was a ways off yet, but it was nice to have that goal in mind.
They ran for a few hours. It felt every bit as long as those hours, but the presence of her pack ever growing gave her hope. And that's when her ears started buzzing.
Keva signaled to the rest of the group as she turned more to the south, trying to avoid the only thing that buzzing could be. The buzzing lessened. Keva slowed a little striding silently and trying to look in every direction at once.
Alrick signaled to his people. They took up a defensive position and set up an outward facing perimeter as they continued to move, though move slower than they were. Keva scanned all around her, the buzzing in her ears lessened but did not go away completely. She forced the group a little farther to the south.
The group moved silently and no one spoke. The berserkers communicated with hand signals as they moved. Keva felt the buzzing almost completely stop. She breathed a sigh and continued along the track she had chosen. They may have avoided a group of shadows and for that she was grateful. The last thing she needed was to contend with a group of shadows when all she wanted was to get back to California as soon as possible.
The buzzing in her ears stopped and she looked straight ahead of the group, stopping them. Out of the dim light moved a group of twelve shadows, floating above the mist shrouded floor.
Keva shifted into werewolf form and spoke, "The enemy is here. Don't chase them. Stay together, they can form around your punches. Don't use your energy trying to grab their forms, they'll just dissipate around you. If they grab a hold of you, attack their solid limbs."
The berserks formed up in three lines to either side of the werewolf and Alrick.
The shadows flowed forward without warning.
Keva met them in a full charge, Alrick was right next to her.
Her claws swept out and raked across the lead shadow. The other shadows moved around her like water around a stone and into the waiting berserkers. She could smell no fear from them. She heard silent punches and grunts. She couldn't put too much attention on how the berserkers were doing. She was fully focused on the single shadow in front of her.
