Wolves and Men

Book 7 chapter 21d

Ansuya's breath caught in her throat. She was too calm and self-possessed to show any outward sign of emotions, but the sincere look in William's eyes as he said that, she knew he was telling the truth. Her Tracker sense gave away nothing but honesty and sincerity from him. An emotion that she had never fully acknowledged before seemed to bloom in that moment and she made a decision.

"I guess we can no longer really call ourselves friends, can we?"

William's brow furrowed in confusion, "I don't understand, what do you mean? You are an Elder of our City Under the Mountain. I would never presume to call us friends."

Ansuya smiled, "I know. But that's not what I meant. If we survive this, you and I will need to have a very long talk, about a lot of things."

William watched as Ansuya stood up and walked out of the destroyed boardroom. William waited a few more moments before he felt he was able to stand up. Looking at the hole in the wall where Ansuya had disappeared into, he looked at Aceso and Physis, both of which were standing and giving each other knowing glances.

William turned towards his alpha, "Aceso, may someone please tell me what the heck is going on?"

Aceso looked a bit shocked and muttered something about humans and dulled senses.

"What was that?" William asked, genuinely curios.

Aceso shook her head, "William, you'll figure it out. It's not for us to say. Let's just get done what we came here to do."

The two females walked out of the boardroom and William was forced to follow completely confused and lost. "May someone please at least tell me where I can get something to eat? I do need to eat after being healed you know."

Ares gave chase to the vampires through the halls and stairwells of the building. He didn't care if he had to chase them through the whole of the city, these two were not going to get away from him, not now, not ever again.

Brian dove through an emergency fire exit door and skidded around the corner of a cubicle and ran at vampire speeds across to the other side. The werewolf was following close behind but Brian still had the edge as far as flat speed went, he was putting distance between him and the wolf.

He knew he could only keep this up for a limited time, he was going to run out of real estate, stairs, and building to run through. Sooner or later, he was going to have face down this werewolf and kill him. He knew just the place for a proper showdown.

Up a short maintenance stairwell, and through a partially renovated office space, through a secondary kitchen area and landed in a bare server room. The new mainframes were supposed to be installed next week, now the place was just a cold dark hole in the building, perfect for all your werewolf killing needs.

Ares had lost sight of the two vampires a while ago, pushing his body to its limit and flooding his body with adrenaline, he coursed through the building after them. He followed their scent as clearly as if he was following a blood trail. He crashed through a door and stopped. Standing in the center of the dark room stood the vampire and the woman he had been with.

"Well, I must say, this has been a merry chase, and one I would have enjoyed on any other day, but you've grown tiresome and I want this ended," Brian said coldly.

Ares sniffed the air deeply, "You want this ended, like how you ended Mr. Davis?"

"Mr. Davis? Who…?" Brian stopped and thought a moment, "Oh yes, that big guy I killed in your mountain. I do believe he said his name was Mr. Davis. Unless you have other Mr. Davis's in your home town? And who might you be, my dear fellow?"

Ares stayed tense, his body coursing with adrenaline, ready for anything, watching for any minute twitch in the body of the vampire in front of him. "I am Ares, Defender of the Mountain, and I've come for vengeance sake, nothing more."

Brian continued, "Oh dear me, what an auspicious and grandiose title. Well, defender of the mountain, what are you going to do about it? Surely, if I killed Mr. Davis, I could most certainly kill you. Why don't you just leave and save your sorry ass to live for another day."

Ares barred his teeth and charged.

Brian started to smile. Until he realized that Ares was charging straight for Rachel. Rachel wasn't at all prepared for the bull rush from the massive werewolf. Ares tore into her with no regard for her at all. He ripped the weapon out of her hands and slashed her body in a dozen places before she even got out a strangled cry for help. Ares ripped off one of her limbs and threw it aside.

Brian eyes were locked wide open as he watched the carnage and shear brutality of the werewolf attack. He found himself unable to move forward but instead moved backwards, first a step, then another, then another. With every step backwards his speed increased till he was running full speed out of the vacant server room and charging head long back to the heart of the tower and safety away from this animal.

Nova and Kenneth were sitting in the central command and control hub in his office directing the rapidly breaking down defenses of his tower. Nova was outwardly calm as she turned to her mate, "Kenneth this is not going well. Too many of our people are dying."

Kenneth nodded grimly, "Yes, my mate, not well at all."

There was a crackling and a radio console sounded, "Dukart Tower, this is flight 228 come in please? Dukart Tower, this is flight 228 please respond?"

Nova raised a questioning eyebrow at the female voice on the radio and Kenneth met the expression with a smile. "Perhaps, our fortunes are changing," Kenneth keyed the radio to transmit, "Flight 228 this is Dukart Tower, go ahead."

"Request permission to land on your helipad? We have a special express delivery for you. If you could have someone meet us, we'd be very appreciative."

Kenneth smiled, "Permission granted. I'll send someone up to meet you when you touch down."

"Copy that, see you in five, Flight 228, out."

Kenneth turned back to the monitors and nodded, "This may very well be that which allows to make the most out of an opportunity."

"What opportunity?" Nova asked genuinely curious.

"The opportunity of starting over, almost completely from scratch. All these vampires in this tower are weak, even Brian and his team, stronger, faster, and more agile than any other of my vampires, are still mentally weak and were too easily killed in a stand-up fight. When we purge the wolves from my tower we will just start over. Making a stronger and purer breed of House Dukart vampires, making our house stronger and purer than any other house on this continent."

Nova seemed intrigued, though her reaction was flat, "If the wolves kill everyone, there won't be a House Dukart to rebuild."

"Oh, my mate, my offspring, my blood flows through your veins. Do you not know me better than this? That I would not have a plan to wipe out this wolf infestation from our home? The wolves are slowed and stopped in some places. We have the weapons and now the reinforcements to exterminate them once and for all."

Kenneth leaned over his board and spoke into his radio mic, "It's time. Prepare to raise the Wall, and close them in, on my mark."

Nova arched an eyebrow and looked over at her mate, "colorful title. What exactly is the 'Wall'?"

"Patience, you'll see my mate. You'll see, and the werewolves will not survive, not this time."
