Wolves and Men

Book 7 chapter 22b

Yet even as he yelled over the gunfire he saw an unfamiliar Shape shifter crash through the door to the stairway, only to not go anywhere. It took William a few moments to fully realize what he was seeing. The Shape shifter pounded and kicked at the floor where just a few moments ago was a stairway leading down to safety. But now, there was clearly a solid floor, and the Shape shifter jumped and kicked at the solid floor underneath him before a hail of bullets ripped into him and stilled his movements.

William slumped to the floor. They were trapped. William heard nothing but the screams of his friends all around him. Ansuya had taken a few rounds as well, she was trailing a line of blood behind her legs, that weren't moving.

William moved forward to try to find some cover from the deadly gunfire that was not stopping. As he moved, he caught two rounds in his leg and arm. He howled in pain, but forced himself to keep moving, as low to the ground as he could, flooding his body with adrenaline and endorphins to fight the pain and keep him moving. If he couldn't figure out a way to stop this attack, they were all going to die.

As he was straining just to keep moving, he could have swore he heard a cry from far off in the distance. It must have been more of his friends dying, he forced himself to move faster, dragging his dead weight leg behind him.

The gunfire sounded less intense. He shook his head. He knew this was just his mind playing tricks on him. He was closer to death than he thought. His blood pounded in his ears louder than the gun fire and he pushed his body even more adrenaline to move faster. He was running out of time.

"William!"

It was Ansuya, she sounded impossibly loud over the gun fire. He looked behind him and saw her. She was pointing ahead of him. He turned his head and looked. A few moments ago, he could almost see the bullets flying towards them just from the shear amount of lead in the air. Now, there was noticeably less debris and fodder flying towards them and the illusion that he thought he was hearing less gunfire, it dawned on him that it wasn't an illusion, the guns had all but stopped firing. Why were the guns going silent? To lull them into a false sense of security so they would stand up? Revealing their position and making them easier targets?

William, continued to crawl forward until he saw a figure walking through the wall ahead of him. He pushed himself up and sprinted towards the figure. He was so blinded by rage, pain, and euphoria from the endorphins that were coursing through his body, he didn't see any distinguishing features from the figure in front of him. The fact that it wasn't holding a weapon of any kind was completely lost on him as he charged towards the figure.

The figure stepped into the light of the room and shook out a wave of red hair. William skidded to a stop as he could do nothing but stare open mouthed at the woman in front of him.

"It's good to see you too, Setford. I had no idea you missed me that much."

William lost himself and grabbed the woman in a hug and squeezed her tightly.

"Ok, ok, ok! Jesus, are you trying to kill me?" Keva laughed as William let her go and she caught her breath from the tight squeeze.

William couldn't believe what he was seeing. "Where did you come from? Where have you been?"

The red haired woman shook her head, "That's a long story…"

"But one absolutely worth the tellin'," said a long-haired blonde man who walked up beside Keva.

Ansuya, joined them, heavily supported by Dutch, "Aren't you going to introduce us to your friends, Keva?"

The blonde bowed deeply to the elder, "My name is Alrick, fair lady. And I speak for my people."

"And your people are?" William asked just a little confused. He was trying not to be rude to the people who just saved all their lives, but he was understandably curious.

Keva interjected, "Ok, since you want to do this now. Ansuya, I am sorry I left but I had to, and by the looks of things I was right." Ansuya didn't say anything, only nodded and waited for Keva to continue.

"I had to go back. There was something about Yrsa that just bugged me. The way she just dismissed us after everything we had seen and been through with them. I knew that I couldn't just leave it like that. So, I went back. I pleaded with her to help. That this was a fight for all of us. But she just looked at me like I was an enemy and that she would rather see me dead than help us. It made me feel so helpless."

Keva looked down as she gripped his hands into fists. The complete rejection of the new chief of the Bear clan weighed on her much more than even William could guess. Maybe it was because they were both women? Maybe it was because with Yrsa's rejection, it meant that she would have been the only pack that had failed in their mission to bring help? Maybe it was all those things, petty though they may be. It affected her deeply.

"Of course, I couldn't let a beautiful woman sit in despair," Alrick spoke up. "I was visiting our cousins of the Bear clan to discuss the spring harvest and tithing. It was by mere chance that I happened to be in the lodge when Yrsa was passing judgment. For if the Bear clan has grown weary, or maybe has lost the stomach, for fighting, we Brothers of Fenrir are always up for a fight. And so, I offered my services and Keva graciously accepted. I must tell you; the vampires may not be much of a threat without their fancy guns, but seeing that Whyte Plain place alone would have been worth the trip. I could do without visit from those Shadows though, haha."

Ansuya nodded slowly taking in the story. "That is an incredible story, Keva. But how did you get ahead of us in a position to help us when you did?"

"We used helicopters, we flew three of them up to the roof and was working our way down as fast as we could to meet up with you," Keva responded.

"Helicopters," Ansuya repeated the word as if it was a completely alien word and was rolling it over her tongue to try and have it make sense.
