Wolves and Men

Book 7 chapter 22f

Suddenly William was flying through the air, a concussive blast ripped through his abdomen as he flew and crashed into the hard metal doors of the elevator. William's Other shook his head as William had a hard time seeing through the black spots that swam up into his vision.

William felt his Other rush forward and clash with Kenneth, break away twirl, slashing and cutting with both fists and claws. The attacks were a blur to William. His body was moving at speeds that he wouldn't have believed possible.

The fight raged all over the office, with both being crashing into and destroying furniture as they grabbed and threw each other around. Then the air was gone from William's lungs and he was sent sprawling backwards, skidding along the floor.

"I always finish what I start, Merda. I'm going to kill you and then purge my tower." Kenneth stalked slowly around the office as William's Other tried to push his body back up to a standing position. "I'm going to kill every last one of you, no matter that it takes ten lifetimes…"

William wasn't paying attention to what the vampire was saying. He was focused on the wall of pelts, out of the corner of his eyes as his Other focused on the vampire. William felt all the shame of his failure crash down on him. How could he had been so blind? How could he have let this happen? And now, the man who displayed their remains as trophies was going to kill him and get away with it.

He silently screamed into his mind, a howl of pain and disgrace and helplessness.

His Other raced forward and clashed with Kenneth. William felt himself slowing down, he was too injured to be a match for Kenneth at his full speed and strength. Kenneth shoved William backwards into a desk. His Other stood up and raced forward.

William watched everything, it was like it was happening in slow motion. The wild unhinged look on Kenneth's face as he grappled with him and his Other. The wall of wolf pelts staring and accusing him with every glace that slid over them. Feeling his body fight with a wild abandon that he hadn't ever felt before.

This fight was not just him and Kenneth, werewolf versus vampire. This fight was about balance, justice, and harmony. Was he here just to kill a parasite, or bring justice to those who couldn't get it for themselves? Was he just a monster waiting for the gloves to come off, like the monster he was fighting, desperate and unhinged?

When was he going to come to terms with what he really was? Was he in balance? How could something off center every bring harmony to anything else?

William mentally grabbed at his Other, as the physical fight continued. William didn't know what he was doing, or what might happen. He fully opened himself to his Other. He had to accept who and what he was, both sides of who he was, civilization, and nature, law, and emotion, strength, and gentleness. William's claw seemed to melt with the mental image of his Other. William felt a strange vibration through his being. It was like hot electricity shooting through him but it wasn't painful.

The two sides of him, nature and civilization, he and his Other came together and for a split second William felt himself and his Other as two separate beings, two separate streams of thought. Then there was just him.

He looked down at his right claw, his body was his once again, his Other was not heard, and as William tried to search his mind for the knot of emotions that was his Other he felt nothing.

His jaw was slammed into with an uppercut and he found himself sailing through the air again. He crashed down onto the top of a desk with a sick dull thud. William was able to roll off the desk before it was bent in half with a hammer blow from the vampire.

William stood up and faced off against Kenneth. He flicked his eyes over to the other two vampires who hadn't moved. He felt strangely at peace for the time in a long time. He flexed his claws and shook his head. His leg didn't hurt, or at least he didn't mind that it hurt anymore, and he felt alert in ways that he hadn't experienced before.

He rushed forward and grabbed Kenneth's arms swinging him into a wall. The vampire bounced off the window and charged right back at him. William could see everything. He felt every piece of fur on his body and was matching Kenneth blow for blow, move for move. He was starting to land more punches than he took.

The fight went on for seconds, hours? William couldn't tell. His focus was on the vampire. William grabbed at both the vampire's wrists and slammed the half demon down onto the ground. He jumped onto him and pressed his forearm under Kenneth's chin closing his throat.

Kenneth grunted and gasped as he felt the weight of the creature on him. He was pinned; he couldn't move. Was this how he was going to go out? Felled by an animal? After all he had done, clawing his way up the ranks of his House, finding Swaan, killing Alessandro, Dominating wolves again. All of it would mean nothing. He would die like his master before him. It was the way of things. He smiled cruelly up at the monster's face, smiling at death. Choosing to die just as he had lived.

William felt something. He held Kenneth to the ground and kicked out behind him. He felt his hind legs connect with something. He didn't know how he knew that someone was coming up behind him, he just did. He jerked Kenneth into the air, gripping him with one claw. With a single jerk, he ripped the vampire's head off and threw both parts of the body to the floor.

William took a deep breath. His body still felt like a coiled spring but he was able to let go of some of that tension. He looked up at the wall at the wolf pelts. He nodded to all of them, taking the Old Grey's pelt down and holding it in his claws. You are avenged. I hope this brings you some peace. Forgive me for not being there. May I meet you for the great hunt in the next life.
