Teresa Of All Trades (Book 1 Complete)

Book 1 Recap

Book 1 Recap

Teresa was going to kill herself.

Thankfully, some multiverse shenanigans got in the way of that. She jumped off the edge of a cliff after making some calls to her loved ones, just as the Earth got integrated into the multiverse by the System. From there, she entered a Tutorial where she chose the healer class. Alongside her were Jake the tank, Preston the light warrior, Sarah the ranger, and Madeline the mage.

The five were trapped on Liberty Island, where the Statue of Liberty resides. However, it was in the middle of a flat, endless desert full of monsters. They had three stages of the Tutorial to go through, but they could voluntarily leave at any time. They could choose to stay together, or split up upon exiting the Tutorial, and their location would be randomized. Additionally, everyone would arrive outside of the Tutorial at the same time, regardless of when they actually left.

They decide to fuck around and find out, and find out they did. For the first stage of the Tutorial, they had to fight through five waves of monsters all trying to kill them, with only 15 minutes between each wave. In between the first and second wave, they came up with the plan to leave one monster alive but injured at the end of a wave, so that way they would have time to actually prepare.

Things go pretty alright for the party until catastrophe strikes. Sarah is struck by a Yectin Clubber, a large monster that fatally injured her and nearly finished her off. Teresa, being the healer, realized she was far too weak at her current level to be able to save Sarah's life, so she told her to leave the Tutorial. This way, Teresa could grow stronger until she was actually able to save Sarah's life due to the strange mechanics of how time functioned in the Tutorial.

The party continued on through the first stage, taking a week long break to train for the upcoming wave. They originally planned for longer, however the monster they had left alive started to reject Teresa's Restoration Mana, refusing to be healed and dying on its own. During the fifth wave, a particularly tough miniboss forced everyone out of the Tutorial except for Teresa, who lacked enough self preservation to prioritize her own wellbeing. She defeated the miniboss in a violent skirmish, then continued on to stage two.

As a reward for beating stage one, she got the skill <Identify>, which allowed her to view the level and race of any monster she came across. This proved incredibly useful, as stage two involved adventuring out into the desert to find and defeat monster strongholds. Out in the desert, there were multiple monsters from previous waves at various levels. Some of them were far too strong for Teresa to take on, especially considering she was just a healer.

She also discovered the nights were far too cold for her, and even if she found a way around that issue she still needed sleep. Deeming it far too risky to sleep in an open desert with a bunch of monsters, she came up with an alternative plan. Teresa was going to kill monsters and grind experience until she was able to make the trip out to a monster stronghold and back in a single day.

During this stage, she got a class change going from "healer," to "Jack Of All Trades." Eventually she accomplished her goal, taking out multiple monster strongholds while acquiring new skills. She used <Healing Touch>, <Facilitated Restoration>, and <Totem Of Life> to heal herself, <Magic Wellspring> to buff her magic and even the magic of her opponents for more experience, <Embers> to burn her opponents to death, <Dash> for better movement, and <Intuitive Aim> for, well, better aim. Being alone forced her to become a generalist using tools and skills from multiple classes just to keep up, making her good at a lot of stuff but not great at anything in particular. Except healing magic, probably. She was pretty solid in that regard.

After a total of one month, the second stage of the Tutorial ended and she got <Inventory>, a skill allowing her to store items in her Soul. Within seconds of the second stage ending, Lady Liberty came to life. Teresa then had to fight the final boss of the Tutorial using various tools and items found in the monster strongholds she had defeated, such as magical C4, a boomerang, some armor upgrades, and a wand that summoned lightning.

It only took a few near death experiences and the destruction of yet another monster stronghold, but Teresa came out victorious. At the end of the Tutorial, she received the <Appraise> ability, allowing her to get information on items. Additionally, her class was upgraded to legendary rarity, she was given royalty status, and then sent back to the real world.

From there she healed Sarah back to full health, then proceeded to help Madeline with finding her daughter. Madeline possessed the skill <Familial Duty>, which would turn out to be an incredibly valuable skill. Eventually they found a settlement, where children and elderly were sent. Turns out, they didn't go through the Tutorial, but instead skipped it entirely. Here the party finds Mackenzie, Madeline's infant daughter.

From there, it's a mad dash to save as many people as possible. Believe it or not, most people are not willing to fight monsters with their life on the line. As a result, there are a lot of low leveled people in the forest around the settlement in extreme danger. Teresa and her party split up, covering a lot of ground in two separate groups while saving people from monsters and guiding them to the settlement.

Along the way, she encounters two sapient species. The Albino Gorillas, a white haired race of gorillas with four arms that communicate using ASL, and the Scilians. The Scilians are a pomeranian squid centaur-like alien race that lives in a swamp of suspiciously blue water. After some time, they discover this water is totally drinkable, and compare it to platypus milk.

From here, Teresa plays a whole lot of roles in the settlement. She gains some diplomatic favor with the sapient races, helps with the construction of the water reservoir, and defeats a lot of monsters in the forest. All around, there are Monster Portals appearing out of thin air, spawning monsters of various levels. After some experimentation, it is revealed these Portals will only grow stronger if left unattended.

Eventually, Teresa gets jumped by strangely prepared bandits. They use a strong poison to drain her Mana and Stamina, then attempt to capture her alive despite the casualties they take in the process. Teresa gets defeated, but she was close enough to her allies for them to intervene and save her. Turns out, fighting humans is completely different from fighting monsters. She compares it to playing the campaign of a video game to competitive multiplayer, where even a bunch of lower leveled opponents can take her down if they are skilled enough.

They eventually discover these people were sent by a multiversal god invading their universe, and there are many more factions invading due to the natural laws of their universe. Teresa's universe has turned into the hotspot for a multiversal arms race on a scale never before seen. Multiple royalties around the world are being coerced into complying with these gods, giving them people and resources for goals not quite understood.

After some more apocalypse chicanery, Teresa decides to stay with her party in a group. She decides there is only so much she can think of on her own, and having multiple people together would be far safer. She pitches the idea to her party, who all agree. They spend their time training against monsters until eventually a tournament arises. Turns out, Teresa's royalty status is actually super duper important, and now she is one of two people qualified to lead the settlement in the eyes of the System.

She faces off against Mijo, a dog whose name is actually Maxwell but believes himself to be Mijo as that is what his owner, Javi, used to call him all the time. He is a failed police dog that never made the cut due to his friendly disposition, and managed to beat his own Tutorial alone. He discovers Javi is dead, but his son Charlie still lives on in the same settlement as Teresa.

Teresa is vehemently opposed to the concept of dictators, which is effectively what the ruler of the settlement would be. From the start of the Tutorial to now, she has already become far more violent and willing to hurt or even kill other human beings. All of this was without the added pressure of being a leader in a post apocalyptic world, given enough time in power she believes it would corrupt her. Ultimately she makes a template for a government that is far more democratic, and hands the ruler position off to Mijo who is far less likely to become corrupted.

Teresa had formed a council of qualified people to help govern the settlement. She decides she is completely and utterly unqualified to lead, and figures it would get in the way of her goals anyways. Even in the Tutorial Teresa had some panic attacks about what was going on with her family, including her own selfish decision to commit suicide. Now, she wants to find them and make sure they are all safe. Her party members all share the same goal for the most part, minus Madeline who has already found her daughter and absolutely should not be traveling through monster infested lands with an infant.

The settlement is in good hands anyhow, with multiple parties catching up in level as they hunt monsters together in large groups. Crazy to think it, but Teresa is not the only competent person around. They meet a man named Thomas who has the skill <Familial Duty>, and he is looking to find his other son. He has already found Mathew, his 14 year old son who was exempt from the Tutorial and placed in the settlement. However, Gabriel, his 16 year old, was old enough to be put through the Tutorial and was not in the same settlement as Teresa.

The party believes a high leveled <Familial Duty> is their best bet of finding their own families, so they agree to help. Thomas is going to head south, which was where the party was going to adventure anyway to take care of some issue that seemed to be causing the Albino Gorillas to migrate closer and closer to the human settlement. They also are going to make a quick stop at the Scilians to connect their settlement to the Portal Network, a mechanic that was introduced upon completion of the tournament allowing you to teleport from one settlement to another for a fee.

Surely everything will go well. Teresa's been doing great after all. She's only spent a month alone in a desert of monsters and been forced to kill multiple people in self defense after countless near death experiences, and then was thrust into multiple positions where she was responsible for the lives of others despite never asking for that. Her mental health is fine, she even said she felt fantastic. Obviously you can always believe that someone who's mentally unwell has a perfect grasp on their own mental state, right? Besides, what could possibly go wrong?
