Tokyo: Rabbit Officer and Her Evil Partner

Chapter 382: Everyone Lies to Themselves

At first, Nishino Ruta was just purchasing some supplies, piling them up in the basement, occasionally muttering 'Prevention is better than cure', 'Things are getting dangerous lately', 'The world is not peaceful'...

Whenever he said this, the guest would concur, citing various examples like 'I have a friend who works in a secret laboratory', 'I've heard the media is blocking information', 'Hospital admissions have significantly increased'...

Nishino Fuyu couldn't understand what the adults were discussing, but as a child, she could more sensitively perceive the change in atmosphere—a peculiar and secretive emotion was spreading, making her and her brother edgy, and start feeling unfamiliar and afraid of everything around.

Initially, her brother kept hiding things from her, refusing to speak frankly; until a month later, the guest barged into the living room with several strangers covered in blood, and she realized the zombie virus had erupted outside, with all of Tokyo already fallen, and zombies biting people everywhere.

The guest and those strangers were survivors, who fled to their home, seeking refuge for a while.

Nishino Ruta, who had been talking every day about what to do if a zombie outbreak happened, seemed firmly convinced of the possibility, but when the day of the outbreak actually arrived, he found it hard to believe and felt the outside might still be safe.

Nishino Fuyu worried about her brother's safety, repeatedly advising him not to leave the house, and together with the strangers, closed the doors and windows, living long-term in the basement to avoid zombies.

In a closed, high-pressure environment, a new collective consciousness was born. The guest, with the strangers, established a new 'Survivor System', with the guest distributing daily supplies and becoming everyone's 'leader'.

The guest required everyone to wake up daily and recite thirty times, 'Thank heaven for letting me survive', while setting various zombie-response rules that everyone had to follow.

Nishino Ruta initially found it a bit absurd, because his workplace kept calling, asking why he hadn't come to work... But gradually, he was influenced by those around him, believing that a zombie outbreak might indeed have happened, only the media had blocked the news, leaving most people unknowingly.

Another two weeks passed, and the family began losing water and electricity, survival conditions worsened, food supplies started to run low, so they suggested going out for food… Maybe there was still food in the shops or convenience stores, they had to make as much reserve as possible before the zombie tide spread.

Despite saying so, nobody wanted to leave the basement, fearing being bitten by zombies upon exit. They gathered to discuss for a long time, finally deciding to draw lots—whoever gets picked is unlucky.

It was unclear whether the Nishino siblings' luck was good or bad, but they were fortunate enough not to draw the lot to go out, allowing them to remain in the basement to avoid zombies.

All the others went out to explore and search for food.

The next day, only two from the exploration team returned, one of whom was the guest.

They said the surface of Tokyo still seemed peaceful, many continued going to work, playing, living without realizing that the zombie virus had broken out, leading to a misjudgment of the situation, and they were surrounded by a group of zombies in an underground parking lot, with other companions dying on the spot, leaving the hard-earned supplies and food there.

"Remember, those zombies fear light! During the daytime, they don't come out, but at night, they appear in droves, hiding in places out of streetlight reach, attacking passersby..."

The guest repeatedly warned, Nishino Fuyu took careful note; despite being young, she understood the meaning of death.

After this incident, only four people were left in the basement.

In the middle of the night, terrifying howls often came from outside the basement's air vents, probably the zombies moving collectively, hunting everywhere under the night sky... Nishino Fuyu occasionally heard zombies banging on the door; one time, while helping dump the chamber pot, leaving the basement to go to the bedroom bathroom, she saw a horrifying zombie through the curtain gap, panicked and accidentally pulled the crossbow trigger, killing the zombie.

From then on, Nishino Fuyu became more afraid of leaving the basement.

Another two weeks passed, their food nearly gone, her brother had to go out looking for food. Despite her fear, Nishino Fuyu still wanted to follow along.

Her brother ordered her to stay home, going out with the guest, leaving her to be taken care of by another stranger.

No one expected that the two would never return.

While she slept, the stranger took her crossbow, forcing her out of the basement, trying to seize all the food.

With no way to resist an adult, Nishino Fuyu could only leave tremblingly, return to her bedroom, taking all the money from her piggy bank, walking to the nearest convenience store.

Outside was just as the survivors described, most people hadn't discovered the zombie virus had broken out, the convenience store was even operating normally.

Nishino Fuyu bought many compressed crackers, solving the food problem, but she had nowhere to go, if she slept on the street at night, she might be attacked by zombies.

Seeing the sunset and the sky darken, she got increasingly scared, returning home, planning to share the compressed crackers with the stranger as rent, so she wouldn't be kicked out.

However, when she returned to the basement, the stranger had already left, and the large house was left with only her.
