The forensics team arrived quicker than Jimmy expected. When Jimmy called Ruiz to send someone to check out the bloodstains in the alley, he dispatched two teams, and luckily one came to Jimmy's room.
Jimmy: "Thank you for your hard work. At least one person in this room went out through the bedroom window to the external fire escape. Check the window and bedroom to find out who that person is.
There was a fight in this room, and the neighbors reported a gunshot. Look for the shell casing and bullet traces.
Also, search for a weapon in this room, a Glock. If you find it, give me the serial number."
The forensics team looked a bit puzzled: "A Glock? What do you mean?"
Jimmy leaned closer to his ear, "Agent Mark was attacked from behind and knocked out, sustaining a severe head injury, and his service weapon was taken."
The forensics team member widened his eyes, and Jimmy placed his right index finger to his lips, "Shh, keep it confidential."
"I understand." The forensics team member immediately put on gloves and began inspecting the bedroom window, while another checked the living room. After a while, the people collecting bloodstains from the alley returned and joined the investigation.
Jimmy: "You guys continue the investigation here. I have other matters to attend to. There's a suspect in the hospital; once you're done here, send someone to collect fingerprints at the hospital and confirm his identity."
Walking out of the room, Jimmy dialed Ruiz's number: "Ruiz, have our people found my car?"
Ruiz: "We found it, the car's fine, and all the equipment inside is intact. They're driving it back to the bureau."
Jimmy: "Great, then I'll head to the hospital to check on Mark."
Ruiz: "Stay safe and try to figure out what's really going on."
Jimmy: "Yeah, also, ask David about which gangs control this area. Anyone selling drugs here must be one of theirs."
Ruiz: "Got it."
Jimmy arrived at the hospital. Both Mark and the unconscious guy were here, but Mark was still in surgery, expected to take a long time.
The other unconscious person had already been moved to a ward. According to the doctors, he had been in shock due to brain ischemia, but his heartbeat was normal now, just waiting for him to wake up.
Jimmy asked the police officer to return to his duties and called in two support agents to keep watch.
Mark's incident gave Jimmy a warning. Not everyone can handle missions alone like him. Future operations should consider this factor and assign at least two people to the same mission for mutual support.
Mark's injury and the loss of his service weapon carried some responsibility on his part, but the biggest responsibility lay with Jimmy, who was used to solo missions and subconsciously assigned different tasks to Mark and Julia.
Mark went to investigate the VA veterans buying drugs, while Julia checked Joseph's past records. It's more time-efficient, but when Mark encountered a problem outside, he was alone with no backup, which was too risky.
Jimmy didn't want to think about what might have happened if he had arrived later.
Soon, two support agents arrived, and Jimmy instructed them to guard the unconscious person, whose identity was still unclear. We'll wait until he wakes up.
Julia, having received the news, rushed over. Jimmy looked concerned, but they waited there and didn't venture out to search for clues.
Finally, the captured person regained consciousness. Jimmy walked directly into the ward, flashed his badge, "FBI Senior Agent Jimmy Yang, your name."
Seeing the suspect silent, Jimmy didn't give him much time to think, "Assaulting a federal agent is a federal felony. I hope you cooperate; otherwise, you'll rot in Federal Prison for the rest of your life."
The suspect widened his eyes, "You're trying to scare me. It's just a few years in jail at most."
Jimmy: "Seems like you don't know me. I've said you'll die in Federal Prison, and there's absolutely no way you'll ever leave alive."
The suspect: "You're threatening me. I want to complain. I want to see a lawyer, I want to speak to your superior."
Jimmy: "I've given you a chance. Seems you're not planning to take it."
After speaking, Jimmy turned and left the ward. Only he and the suspect heard his words, which was against protocol, but it wasn't necessary to fuss about now. The forensics team had already taken the fingerprints, and the identity should be confirmed soon.
Jimmy went out and found Julia, told her to go back to the office, ask Ruiz for gang information, and start investigating. Jimmy would wait here for Mark.
Finally, Mark in the ward woke up, groaned, and realized he was in a hospital room, then reached out to press the call button.
After the doctor checked him, Jimmy pulled up a folding chair and sat next to Mark: "Mark, how are you feeling?"
Mark: "I'm okay now. Sorry, I messed up."
Jimmy shook his head, "It's not your fault; I should have arranged Julia to be with you. Being alone is too dangerous. Now, tell me, what happened?"
Mark: "I found the dealer, nicknamed Black Wolf, a Latin American. Someone directed me to his location, I found him, got out of the car and followed him for a bit, then there was trouble. At the mouth of an alley, I got attacked, someone pointed a gun at me."
