North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 665: Part-Time Hunter 2

Jimmy turned the steering wheel and drove off the road, heading into the roadside grass, charging towards the group of people, while grabbing the walkie-talkie: "Mahong, I'm going after them, check if any of our people are injured." Mahong's car didn't follow down but instead continued forward along the road; just now he also heard the gunshots, and he could determine the location from the sound of the shots.

There were four people running away, all dressed in camouflage uniforms, carrying large-capacity backpacks. Upon getting closer, Jimmy could even see that two of them had painted their faces with camouflage paint, preparing to thoroughly blend into the forest and grassland.

However, it was strange that they weren't wearing bullet-proof vests, and their rifles were slung over their shoulders with gun straps instead of being held in their hands. Did they not use the rifles in the gunfight earlier? Or did they pack away the rifles after the gunfight for easier escape? Because of the distance, Jimmy couldn't distinguish what kind of guns they were using from the gunfire he heard.

Seeing Jimmy's car rushing over, the four of them changed direction, running towards the sparse grove of trees, disappearing from normal sight in just a few seconds. The distance now exceeded a hundred meters, and Jimmy couldn't see their position, but he absolutely didn't dare to bet on the opponent's shooting accuracy. If they were ambushing there, driving straight over would just be serving himself to them.

Jimmy swiftly turned the steering wheel while stepping on the brake, parking the side of the vehicle facing them. He also grabbed the rifle from the passenger seat, opened the car door, got out, and crouched by the front wheel, with his head slightly peeking above the hood to look toward the opposite side, but he saw nothing.

Jimmy moved a bit, took the walkie-talkie from the center console in the car, "Mahong, the enemy seems to be hiding in the grove, I don't have visibility here and can't confirm their position."

Mahong: "Wait for support, don't be rash. I'm getting out to search for the three agents' location."

Jimmy: "Copy that."

After speaking, Jimmy put the walkie-talkie into his pocket and aimed his gun at the grove again.

Mahong also parked his car by the roadside, taking the rifle and walkie-talkie as he got out and started searching. The location of the gunfight was only a few hundred meters from the place they were originally supposed to meet the three agents. In the worst-case scenario, they likely left their stationed post for some reason, got into a gunfight with the enemy, and were then taken down. Otherwise, it's hard to explain why they didn't show up and let those guys escape.

Soon, Jimmy noticed movement in a bush; a few branches were swaying, but other parts were mostly still. Thinking it over, Jimmy had no scruples and directly fired two shots at the bush, quickly taking cover behind the car's front, leaving just a little space to continue observing.

After waiting for a while, there was still no feedback, no one returned fire, and he didn't see them standing up. Jimmy considered for a moment, got back into the car, and this time stayed down, keeping as little of himself exposed as possible, and started the car to chase after them.

As he approached the bush, Heart Eye had already determined they weren't here. Fxxk, a few minutes wasted, they had run further away.

Jimmy picked up the walkie-talkie: "Mahong, have you found them?"

After a few seconds, Mahong replied: "Found them, I'm administering first aid, all three are shot, and one of them is seriously injured. They've already notified Raymond, and support is on the way."

Jimmy: "I've found traces of their escape, I'll go after them first."

Mahong: "Stop, don't chase, it's too dangerous."

Jimmy: "No, I'll be careful."

After speaking, Jimmy parked the car next to the bush, grabbed a backpack from the backseat, and got out with the rifle. The backpack contained mineral water, chocolates, and compressed biscuits to ensure his basic energy supply, specifically prepared for this mission because they would mostly be staying outdoors, so these necessities had to be prepared.

With the backpack on, he hung the walkie-talkie on his bullet-proof vest for easy access, adjusted his pistol and spare magazines, then walked towards the bush with the rifle. There were some drag marks on the ground at the bush where he fired just now, indicating they indeed left from here, maybe crouched or crawled away from the bush.

In a few minutes, they couldn't have gone far, and the only direction in front of him where they could leave silently was through the sparse grove ahead.

Jimmy advanced through the bush to investigate, without running, but rather advancing slightly hunched over, observing the ground, noticing some broken traces on the grass and leaves, likely pressed down when they left.

Having never pursued suspects in this environment before, Jimmy didn't feel nervous, but rather a bit excited, imagining himself as a hunter, tracking prey along the escape traces of the quarry.

The opposite side had four people, but Heart Eye assured him that within a few dozen meters around him, no one was ambushing him. In this wooded and bushy area, attempting to shoot him from a distance was almost impossible, as the trees would block bullets; this wasn't a neatly arranged forest; the trees intermingled, and their shooting range definitely wouldn't exceed fifty meters.

Such an environment was most suited for Jimmy. He continued to pursue slowly hunched over, occasionally adjusting his direction slightly while carefully observing from one spot, though after he exited the grove, he saw nothing in the clearing ahead, indicating they had likely crossed the clearing already.

Hiding behind a tree, Jimmy observed carefully to the left, right, and ahead, then hunched over again to resume pursuit. This time because he was in the clearing, he didn't run in a straight line, but rather in an S-shaped route forward. He reached the dense forest ahead without being attacked; the other side was likely focused on escape, never expecting someone to be tracking them based on the traces.

Under normal circumstances, a single car with at most two or three people wouldn't dare pursue them like this. From past encounters these days, they were quite familiar with what kind of people they encountered along their getaway route.

In this dense forest, Jimmy could relax a little more. In such an environment, he absolutely wouldn't be ambushed by the other side, so he could stand upright and continue investigating.

Checking both sides, he confirmed a trace of someone passing through, which cost Jimmy quite a bit of time, but finally, he determined the enemy's route.

Jimmy took out the walkie-talkie to call Mahong, luckily his walkie-talkie was linked to the vehicle's radio, allowing communication to still function at this distance. Reporting the GPS coordinates displayed on his phone to Mahong, this marked the start of his pursuit, and support could begin investigation from here once it arrived.

Mahong advised Jimmy with a few words and didn't say anything further. He also needed to wait for assistance to rescue the three agents and couldn't abandon them to follow Jimmy.

Jimmy secured the walkie-talkie and continued following the traces.

Northern New York State had vast uninhabited forests; though interspersed with clearings, the fewer cities and towns actually made it easier for them to escape. As long as they weren't noticed along their escape route, locating them in such an environment was extremely challenging, which was part of their pre-planned escape plan.

Jimmy's current pursuit was within a state forest park, abundant with natural forests and scarce roads, typically devoid of tourists. In this environment, both those fleeing ahead and those pursuing behind had relative ease, though Jimmy had to pause now and then to track the traces, taking up more time.

Testing the walkie-talkie just now, it was already out of signal, indicating he had distanced himself from his car. Without a relay station, his walkie-talkie was temporarily useless, and his phone had no signal either. In rural areas and the wilderness in the United States, having no signal was normal. After all, communication companies aim to profit, and setting up base stations in the wild was a losing venture for them, making satellite phones the most suitable communication tool in such environments.

After a distance of pursuit, his excitement dimmed slightly, but having come this far, naturally, he wouldn't give up halfway; continuing the chase was the best way forward.

Finally, at the location of a fallen trunk, Jimmy discovered traces, with moss cleaned away from a section of the trunk, and a plastic bottle along with packaging paper on the ground, indicating they had rested here. Judging from the initial distance and time, they should not be too far ahead of Jimmy now.

The exhaustion from the chase gradually faded as Jimmy revitalized himself to continue the pursuit forward, now acting with extra caution, with the distance between them gradually closing.
