Jimmy wasn't in a hurry to investigate further; he rested for a while, took out a bottle of mineral water from his bag, drank half of it, and then got up to check on the two beside him.
Looking at their equipment now, Jimmy truly felt that the injured agent from earlier wasn't wronged.
The main weapon is the HK416, developed by the German Heckler & Koch company, based on the M4 with the pneumatic system of the G36 rifle. Although it has only been on sale for three years, it has received high praise for its reliability and safety in harsh environments. Jimmy and Nia had previously considered this for home defense weaponry but ultimately deemed it unnecessary, opting not to capture it. However, these mercenaries using such weaponry surely have a lot of money.
The secondary weapon is the SIG P226, also highly praised for its reliability and ease of use.
Dark jungle camouflage; the bullet-proof vest also has a camouflage pattern. One person even has a few streaks of dark green ink smeared across his face, which fully indicates that they were prepared to move through these woods in New York State in advance. With this set of equipment, it's tough to spot them from a distance without thermal imaging.
Inside the backpack are two more bottles of water, compressed biscuits, chocolate energy bars, and several individually packaged tablets, likely either for revitalization or special uses—a vitamin pill wouldn't be the case.
Both individuals have a GPS with map display, which obviously was used for positioning and moving earlier. Additionally, as Jimmy guessed, they both carry throat mics and earpieces, connected to their walkie-talkies, explaining their smooth communication, which surpasses the standard equipment of the FBI.
It seems their preparation was quite thorough, but the only issue is that they don't have a satellite phone or cellphone on them. It's unclear whether they didn't plan to contact others or just rely solely on walkie-talkie communication between them. In these woods, the communication distance of walkie-talkies is severely impacted, likely no more than three kilometers.
Jimmy thought for a moment, took the walkie-talkie and throat mic earpiece from their bodies, wore them without adjusting the walkie-talkie frequency, and left the two bodies at the spot. This is a forest, a helicopter can't land, and he can't handle this; all he can do is leave it as is. However, Mahong had already recorded the coordinates, and Detective Raymond and others will naturally come to handle it later.
It's not that Jimmy didn't want to switch their HK416; it's just that given his status, it's not suitable to swap for their gun when he is already fully equipped himself. Otherwise, if a gunfight occurs later, many issues would be unclear. They had previously shot DHS agents and innocent civilians, and if someone causes trouble at that time, Jimmy would be required to go through many procedures to prove it—a hassle.
Jimmy reloaded his own gun, started again, and pursued in the direction the second person came from. The helicopter was also tracking their location, but using thermal imaging in such dense woods to locate someone is not an easy task, as treetops would block many signals.
The helicopter wasn't far from Jimmy, and after walking some distance, he picked up his walkie-talkie to call Mahong, confirming whether they had discovered the tracks of the other side, and reported that he obtained their walkie-talkie from the bodies. However, he didn't know their talk frequency, now only relying on the current frequency to expect any gains.
Jimmy didn't have to wait long; news came from Mahong's side that they discovered two heat signals about two kilometers from Jimmy's previous position, but they couldn't confirm them, only sending coordinates to Jimmy.
Jimmy opened the backpack, took out a compass, verified the direction, and ran towards the coordinates reported by Mahong. Now, having a definite target, and also not worrying about ambush within dozens of meters, he naturally moved much faster.
The walkie-talkie rang again; Mahong said: "Jimmy, the helicopter is short on fuel, and we need to go back, estimated to need about half an hour round trip, don't get close to them, wait near there for our support. I'll ask Detective Raymond to bring a few more people over."
Jimmy: "OK, I just need to detect their track, go and return quickly."
With a helicopter scanning the area, it's much easier than investigating alone; of course, Jimmy hoped everything could be straightforward. He continued heading towards the coordinates given by the helicopter, but upon arriving nearby, he found out that the opponents had already left. The area was silent, and didn't even show many traces like they rested here—earlier, the helicopter must have detected the heat source from afar, not directly overhead.
The rest needs Jimmy to pursue further by himself, only able to keep watching the ground to move forward.
The walkie-talkie Jimmy obtained didn't call out, nor had any other conversations. If Jimmy hadn't checked it earlier, he might have thought he hadn't turned it on... It seems the opponent already identified their failure and adjusted their walkie-talkie frequency; with the distance likely not too far, theoretically well within effective communication range of walkie-talkie.
Jimmy detached the earpiece and throat mic, connected them to his walkie-talkie, powered off the opponent's device, and tossed it into his backpack. Learning from past lessons, he exposed himself due to walkie-talkie issues before. Now, given the conditions, making changes also brings peace of mind—and carrying a walkie-talkie isn't as convenient as an earpiece.
