While Hatsumi tried to organize some clothing for Kaito, I was called to the headmaster, unsurprisingly. I had visited his office so many times it started to feel like home. I chuckled at the thought, as I knocked.
"Enter."
"Sir." I greeted him and saluted. He was sitting behind his desk, studying some papers. I stood there patiently until he set them down and looked at me.
"I got a report from Captain Sarah about your command exercise. Of course, I had already gotten some information before, about the goblin attack. From what we know, the goblins made a deal with someone. Possibly the Brotherhood. Evidence found in their camp suggests they had been raiding a lot, yet we had no reports of a goblin warband in the area. Someone covered for them."
The headmaster looked at a piece of paper, then continued: "Lieutenant Karl Hickley was likely involved, sadly his death prevents us from questioning him. The mages who set a trap for you escaped as well, it is unclear if they had any help. That the army has been openly compromised is concerning and will lead to a lot of suspicion."
He looked at me again. "There are still a lot of unanswered questions and an investigation is ongoing. However, that you have killed Lieutenant Karl Hickely will cause trouble. You are a commoner and killed a noble. You have witnesses and the protection of the princess, so there is not too much they can do. But you should expect some more questioning. Your enemies will likely use this to make you look bad and cast doubt on your character."
What else was new? I would have been shocked if Archibald did not use this to accuse me of something.
"And I have one last point, your growing army. You can keep your undead here on the academy grounds but if it grows much larger I will charge you rent."
"Yes, sir!" I replied. Rent sounded bad, I did not have a lot of money. Hopefully it would not come to that. Or I could get a deal with Gronir. He was interested in working with Kaito.
"Dismissed."
I left, wondering why my newest creation had not come up. Maybe Gronir did not inform him yet. Or maybe he had nothing to add.
While I had been with the headmaster, Hatsumi had found some clothing for Kaito. It was not yet the butler uniform she wanted, it was simply a school uniform. But it certainly looked better than the loincloth.

By now it was getting late so we decided to visit the mess hall. Kaito got a lot of stares and people started whispering.
"Is his head floating?" I heard someone wonder. Kaito must have noticed as well, since he smiled at the student, then tipped his head. It certainly got him even more attention, and some gasps.
A lot of students went into town on a Solday so it was easy to find a table. I got some sausages and fresh bread, a simple but tasty meal. Hatsumi had one of her blood beverages from Cassie.
As we sat down I addressed Kaito: "Does anything here look appealing to you? If you want to try some food. I have no idea what a Dullahan eats. I also have some bone snacks for Nyx."
"Meow."
I threw Nyx a small bone and she started munching. The other cats got treats as well, of course. Interestingly they liked bones too, despite them not being skeletons.
"Nothing really speaks to me, but I thank you for the offer." Kaito replied. "I am also uncertain how I would consume things, since my head is separate from my body."
"Nyx does not even have a stomach. Hasn't stopped her." Helena pointed out.
"It is certainly fascinating watching those bones dissolve and be devoured." Kaito said.
"What is that?" I heard a loud voice ask, it was Florence.
I turned around and saw her marching towards our table. Archibald, Jack and Simon were with her.
"Greetings lady, I am Kaito." He introduced himself.
"It talks." Simon stated.
"An astute observation." Kaito commented.
"A freak, just like her." Jack added.
"I heard she got people killed and animated their corpses during the trip." Archibald sneered.
"Perhaps one day you will be lucky enough to join her ranks as well." Kaito suggested.
"First he would need to be strong enough to be deployed in the field." Hatsumi added.
Cassie giggled.
Florence smiled. "Deployed in the field? Sleeping in mud? That is for commoners like you."
Was she trying to pretend that it had not been their incompetence that stopped them from commanding a squad? I guess she was trying to sell it as a perk, that they had to stay behind and take extra lessons.
"A commoner with a maid, and now a butler." Hatsumi pointed out.
"Butler?" Simon asked.
"That would be me." Kaito added.
Archibald laughed.
Florence blinked. "A goblin? As a butler? They are a bunch of savages. That you made this one talk already shows that he is not a real tier three. You are just pretending, feeding him lines."
"His head is not even fully attached." Jack pointed out. Then he tried to grab the head. Kaito caught his hand. The small goblin had a surprisingly strong grip. Then Kaito's head floated higher until he was on eye level with Jack.
"That was rude. Please do not try to grab my head. I am quite attached to it." Kaito said, with a straight face.
I laughed at the pun.
"Oh shit, it's burning!" Simon shouted, pointing at the neck. Now that the head was floating the frostfire was clearly visible.
Kaito's head floated back down. "I can assure you this is quite normal and there is no need to be alarmed."
"What the hell is that?" Archibald asked.
"A butler. One would think that you have heard of the concept." Skadi said.
Cassie snickered.
"Freaks!" Florence said. "Let's leave, I have lost my appetite."
I watched the group retreat. That had gone surprisingly well.
"What a bunch of interesting people." Kaito mused.
