The door to the bar burst open as Scar stormed through the doorway without breaking his stride. His eyes darted around the room, rapidly scanning the faces within, before narrowing when they landed on a familiar one.
"About fucking time..."
He muttered to himself, storming over to the familiar drunkard as he was lifting the drink to his lips. But the sweet nectar never got a change to touch his tongue, as Scar slapped the beer glass from his hands and sent it shooting across the room like a cannon ball.
A chorus of gasps sounded as it pelted through the wall and all eyes turned to the pair, as Scar grabbed the man by the scruff of his shift collar and dragged him from his seat.
"Hey, I was drinking that you a- Oof! Geez, what's gotten you so worked up."
The drunkard let out a grunt as he was slammed against the wall, the wood creaking and cracking slightly behind his back. His feet dangled helplessly in the air as he was suspended off of the ground, help up by Scar with only one hand.
"Where the hell have you been?! I have been looking everywhere for you to explain yourself! So get to it, now!"
"What can I say, I was a little hurt after you killed me. I had to take some time to reflect and get over that trauma. Something that happened in my favourite bar too... honestly just this alone might need some time away on its own and- Oof!"
The smug, arrogant attitude was knocked out of him as he was slammed against the wall again. Scar's irritation was pouring off of him in waves, flooding the entire bar with a malevolent aura that caused more than one to relieve their drinks into their pants. The drunk let out a condescending laugh, pointing over Scar's shoulder.
"Maybe you should work on your negotiation tactics a little more, or at least gain a little class when it comes to respecting establishments like this."
Scar frowned, glancing over his shoulder to find himself staring down the barrel of a rifle. The Winchester trembled in the bar-owners hands as he did his best to keep it steady and pointed at Scar's head. He was a portly old man, with a hunch that made it look as if he had no neck. Sausage fingers curled around the trigger, whilst his glasses fogged up and sweat trickled from his thinning, wispy white hair.
When the gun cocked, Scar simply narrowed his eyes into an irritated scowl.
"It's a fake, or it doesn't work. Now go back behind the bar, and leave us to our business. Besides, even if it was real... you wouldn't dare. "
Bang!
***
Beer glasses banged and clattered against the table as the bar-owner set them down with a kind smile on his face. He pushed his wire-frame glasses up his nose before wiping his hands on his apron.
"Anything else I can get for you lads?"
"No thanks John, we're fine for now."
The drunkard lifted his glass in salute to the bartender before lifting it to his lips, finally getting the drink that had been interrupted yesterday. Scar meanwhile drummed his fingers in annoyance as they sat in the booth across from each other.
He completely ignored the pint of beer sitting in front of him and only half glared at the Bartender, who was talking with another customer while the Winchester he had wielded hung on display above the bar.
"I still can't believe he actually shot me...", Scar mumbled under his breath before turning his attention towards the drunkard across from him, who was just gulping down the last dregs of beer in his pint glass.
"Ah! That's good stuff~", The drunkard slammed down the empty glass, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand and gave Scar a cocky smile as he continued, "What do you care though? I mean it bounced clean off your dome, plus he doesn't even remember doing it. Neat trick by the way, how did you pull it off?"
"I can do more than just that."
Scar extended two fingers before curling them slightly. The glass in front of him followed his fingers movements, gliding across the table by itself, avoiding the grasping hand of the drunkard. He watched in confusion and awe as the drink moved on its own, not even spilling a drop, and wondered if he was already plastered after just one drink.
"You can get it after you explain things to me, which you should have done yesterday. If we include that, you have already made me wait a week for a simple explanation. So start talking, or I'll show you a few more of my tricks. One's you really won't like."
"Ooh, Scary~ I'm truly terrified. Honestly... When you've died over three hundred times, the threat of death very quickly starts to lose its power. I know, I know. Next you're going to say 'I can make your life a living hell, so you'd wish for death', Blah blah blah. Again, I've heard it before and I really don't care.
There's nothing you can do to me that I haven't already tried myself. Well, maybe you could... but it wouldn't really solve anything.
So how about we start with names instead of threats. For instance, I'm Phil."
He gave a half hearted smile, simply trying to act polite and easy-going while having nothing but misery within his eyes, and gestured with his hands towards the masked man in front of him.
"Scar..." He muttered, clenching his fists as he did so. For some reason, this man had a special ability for getting on his nerves, but surely that wasn't his ability.
"Scar huh? What a... unique name. And by unique, I obviously mean weird as shit. I mean what kind of name is that, huh?
If you're going to call yourself that, I might as well choose a better name. Let's see... How about Mayfly? Yeah, that sounds good... Then again, even if its terrible you're the only one that's going to remember it..."
Scar narrowed his eyes, supressing the urge to sigh as the drunkard prattled on.
"Why is that?"
"Why? Well Mayfly's only live for a day... I think. That's what I've heard at least, although it must be a pretty quick life if that's the case. Surely it can't be birth to death, right? That's far too fa-"
"Why am I the only one who will remember?! Why do they not, while I do? Why do you remember? Explain the loop you idiot, not your name!"
"Oh right, duh doy!" The drunkard, Mayfly, rolled his eyes and slapped his forehead like he was an idiot before slouching in his chair. His finger idly traced around the rim of his glass, his eyes locked on Scar's still frothy drink while he spoke,
"It's real simple. You remember because you are an outsider. I'm assuming that's why you are dressed up so strangely. I have no idea what is going on out there, but it must be pretty freaky depending on some of the things I've heard."
Content with his explanation, he reached towards Scar's drink, only for it to glide to the other side of the table once more, far from his grasping fingers. Mayfly clicked his tongue and slumped in his chair like a sulking teenager.
"Outsider. You mean from outside the town, or the loop?"
Mayfly sighed softly before nodding, "A bit of both really. Basically, you weren't here when the loop was initially established. Which means certain things don't apply to you, mainly in terms of memory. As I'm sure you noticed, you also don't appear at the start of the day, but when and where you entered the loop.
There's also something strange about Outsiders. You're... powerful. That's mainly the reason for another rule break. "
Scar narrowed his eyes, thinking over it all as some puzzle pieces started to click into place. He drummed his fingers on the table for a few seconds, drumming out his familiar tune, before clenching his fists tight.
"Let me guess... We don't come back when we die."
Mayfly nodded softly, "Yeah, pretty much. That's what happened to the last outsiders that arrived. They fought against the invasion of the ghosts, tried their best to help the people and sacrificed themselves to do so. Only for it to reset and their sacrifice to mean absolutely nothing..."
He let out a deep sigh, reaching out for the drink again, however this time Scar didn't pull it away from him. He eagerly took it into his grasp, downing half of it in just a few gulps before placing the glass down.
"That's why I was trying to tell you to leave before nightfall, so you wouldn't do the same. If you had left before the loop resets, you would have been fine. But now you are stuck here forever, and I'm sorry about that.
That's not what I wanted when I started this loop in the first place."
