Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 493: Prior Causes

Received consent from Kelly Lax.

Luke submitted an application to the police department to re-test and compare Sofia's DNA with that of Kelly Lax's husband's remains.

Because it involved exhumation, Reid was initially puzzled, not knowing why Luke wanted to do this.

When he learned that the FBI might have an insider who could access the case data database, Reid agreed.

To ensure the accuracy of the DNA test, Luke was present throughout the excavation process.

Kelly Lax also attended, enduring the pain, crying uncontrollably, which put a lot of pressure on the officers present.

If it wasn't absolutely necessary, the police wouldn't want to exhume a body, as this action carries responsibility and could easily lead to family complaints.

Fortunately, everything went smoothly, and the DNA extracted from the remains was sent to the detective bureau's technical team for expedited analysis.

After all this, Luke contacted Anthony.

Since the police had already exhumed the body, Anthony didn't wait any longer and informed the Internal Affairs Division about the possible FBI insider, allowing them to lead the investigation.

Before the new DNA test results came out, there wasn't much Luke could do. After simply assigning some tasks, he called Raymond to go to the shooting range at the police station for practice.

Luke practiced with the handgun first, and after a few rounds, he moved on to rifle practice.

His shooting skills were already excellent; he wasn't seeking to improve much but needed to maintain a good level.

As Raymond put it, if you don't know what to do, going to the shooting range to practice shooting is definitely the right decision.

The next morning, before the DNA test results were out, Luke had Xiao Hei keep an eye on the tech department, while the rest of the team proceeded with the morning meeting as usual.

Yesterday Luke went to practice shooting, but the others continued investigating the case.

The deputy said, "I investigated Kelly Lax and the nanny's financial situations and found no significant cash flows."

Luke nodded, noting that when communicating with Kelly Lax and the nanny, he hadn't noticed any obvious signs of lying.

"What about the situation on Hugo Joduri's side?"

Matthew said, "Hugo Joduri has several records: speeding, theft, robbery, intentional injury.

He had been living in San Francisco and came to Los Angeles about a year ago.

I contacted the San Francisco police to help investigate Hugo Joduri's situation.

But we haven't received any valuable feedback yet."

Luke said, "According to the kidnapper John's confession, Sofia was brought by Hugo Joduri, and they've been in contact longer.

Understanding Hugo Joduri's past will greatly help in understanding Sofia's identity.

I'll contact the FBI to have them investigate Hugo Joduri's situation."

Although the police force is larger, the police from different regions aren't closely connected, making the FBI more suitable for cross-regional investigations.

At around ten in the morning, Xiao Hei returned from staking out at the tech team.

He opened the office door, holding a document, "Guys, the exciting moment has arrived."

The deputy rolled his eyes, "Don't be so dramatic, we're investigating a case here. Just tell us the results."

Everyone else turned their attention to Xiao Hei.

Xiao Hei chuckled sheepishly, revealing a mouthful of big white teeth, "According to the DNA test results, Sofia and Kelly Lax's husband have no biological relationship.

They are not father and daughter."

Everyone's expressions varied.

Luke had anticipated this possibility before and didn't hesitate for too long, proceeding directly to the next step of arrangements.

"Deputy, contact Anthony and inform him of this situation."

"Marcus, interrogate Sofia."

"Yes, sir."

The investigation machinery started moving, and everyone went to work on their tasks.

Robbery and Murder Department interrogation room.

Sofia was brought into the interrogation room in handcuffs, her hands shackled to the interrogation chair.

Luke re-evaluated the young woman before him, "What's your name?"

"Sofia."

"I'm asking for your real name?"

"I told you, I lost my memory. Ever since I can remember, I've been called Sofia."

"Stop pretending. We know you're not Sofia, the victim of a kidnapping case from ten years ago. Who are you really?"

Sofia paused, "I never said I was Sofia. You guys were the ones who brought two people to identify with me, and now I can't even believe I suddenly have a stepmother in this world.

I can feel she doesn't like me, and I don't like her either."

"Sofia, we didn't suspect your identity because of Kelly Lax's doubts.

From our first meeting, I realized you were lying and hiding something.

At the time, I thought you were a victim of the kidnapping ten years ago, and under the kidnappers' coercion, you did some wrong things, and out of guilt or fear of the law, you didn't tell the truth.

But now it seems your real purpose in lying was to cover up the truth that you were impersonating Sofia."

Sofia shifted slightly, seemingly uneasy, but still stubborn, "I don't know what you're talking about."

Luke stood up, walked to her, and showed her the DNA test report, "We found Kelly Lax's husband's DNA, matched it with yours, and there is no blood relationship between you two.

It's certain that you are not 'Sofia.' Who are you? What's your name?"

Sofia gritted her teeth, feeling ashamed and angry, "I never claimed to be a victim of a kidnapping case from ten years ago; you were the ones who said that.
