Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 520: Benefits (Part 2)

"Do you have time tomorrow? Let's hit the shooting range."

"You busy bee, why the sudden urge to practice shooting with me?"

"I want to practice with a shotgun."

"I see, you want a free coach! Everyone at the detective bureau knows I'm the best with a shotgun."

Luke chuckled, "Why not include the entire LAPD?"

"The detective bureau is the best department in the entire LAPD, isn't that a given?"

"You're not wrong.

Do you have time tomorrow?"

"Of course, get ready for David's rigorous coaching. Be prepared, I won't go easy on you."

...

Noviba Gun Club.

Luke drove into the parking lot; it was his first time at this gun club.

David had picked the place, claiming their selection of shotguns was the most extensive in Los Angeles and the simulated range was perfect for shotgun training.

Shotguns, known as close-quarters combat weapons, can deliver devastating blows at close range, exceptionally powerful and intimidating.

They're also a staple for tough guys in movies and TV shows.

Luke had a shotgun learning card but hadn't found the time to practice.

Luckily, he had business with David and roped him into giving some shotgun lessons.

A few minutes later, David also arrived at the parking lot.

After meeting up, the two of them entered the gun club together.

David asked, "Why the sudden interest in shooting? Don't tell me you missed me.

"I've encountered quite a few terrorists lately, and it's made me realize that a handgun isn't powerful enough. I need to learn more to improve."

David patted Luke on the shoulder, "You made the right choice; a shotgun is what a real man should use."

Luke continued, "I wasn't finished. Besides practicing with the shotgun, I have another matter to discuss with you."

David smirked as if he already knew, "What's the matter?"

"Let's practice shooting first; it's not that urgent. We'll have plenty of time to talk over lunch." Luke was quite eager about the shotgun.

"Come on, I'll help you pick out a gun." David walked while explaining, "There are many different types of shotguns: police, military, hunting. Each one serves different purposes.

The police model can take various types of ammo, the most common being lead, rubber, and signal rounds—these are interchangeable."

"As a beginner, you should try a few different shotguns, but I'll introduce you to four commonly used ones.

Remington 870, Mossberg 500, Beretta 1301, Benelli M4.

The first two are pump-action, requiring manual operation between shots, which makes them very versatile and reliable.

The latter two are semi-automatic, allowing for faster shooting."

Luke thought for a moment, then said, "Then I'll try several shotguns this morning and pick one to focus on in the afternoon."

"Heh, don't think just because you're good with a handgun that you'll be good with a shotgun. A day isn't enough.

Learn well, rookie."

Luke shrugged, not arguing, and activated a shotgun learning card [allows rapid learning and mastery of shotgun skills within three hours].

With that, under David's guidance, Luke started his shotgun training.

Shotguns are popular in Hollywood blockbusters. Classics like "Terminator" and recent hits like "John Wick."

Luke was familiar with shotguns but hadn't used one in practice before. The reason was simple: the pros and cons of shotguns are clear.

The advantage is their power and wide attack range.

The disadvantage is the strong recoil, low ammo capacity, and reloading is a skill in itself.

Having mastered handguns and rifles, Luke had a solid foundation, so he quickly adapted to the shotgun's style.

He first tried a pump-action shotgun, manually loading rounds, which had a strong operative feel but was slower in shooting speed.

After that, Luke tried a semi-automatic shotgun, noticing a much faster firing speed, though at a higher cost.

Of course, cost wasn't an issue for Luke.

Thus, he didn't go for the higher prestige pump-action but opted for a semi-automatic.

Trying several semi-automatic shotguns, Luke finally found the Benelli M4 to be the most suitable.

This semi-automatic shotgun is designed and manufactured by Italy's Benelli, initially developed as a combat shotgun for the US military, firing 12-gauge shells, adopted by the military under the name M1014.

The Benelli M4 uses modern modular design; the stock is detachable, making it suitable for shooting in confined spaces, fast firing speed, holds seven rounds, and compared to other shotguns, has less recoil.

Luke, already a good shot, under the added benefit of the shotgun learning card, mastered the basics by the end of the morning. He gradually adapted to the shotgun's recoil and shooting method, albeit still needing to improve reloading speed.

At noon, Luke and David had lunch together at the gun club's cafeteria.

"Cheers!"

The weather was quite warm today, and each of them grabbed a glass of chilled beer.

David took a big swig, then burped, "You did well this morning."

Luke smiled, "David, you're a lucky guy, about to witness the birth of a real tough guy."

"Bullshit, you're far from it." David pointed to himself, "Now this is what you call a real tough guy."

Luke teased, "If the standard for tough guys is being bald, then I'm definitely way off."
