Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 529: Courting Trouble

Three shots.

Three people lay dead on the deck.

Everything happened too suddenly; Lilith and the girl with glasses didn't even have time to react.

It wasn't until Elsa Marin fell to the ground, her right hand landing on Lilith's foot, that Lilith stumbled back in panic, letting out a terrified scream, "Ah..."

The girl with glasses screamed even more fearfully, "Don't kill me, I don't want the treasure anymore, I don't want it.

I just want to go home, find my mom...

I'll never go treasure hunting again..."

Luke "..."

These two were clearly frightened by the murder scene.

Luke suddenly realized, although the three were treasure hunting partners, they'd only known each other for a few days. Moreover, with Elsa Marin just revealed as a traitor, their trust in each other was severely compromised.

Were they simply scared by the scene before them?

Or were they worried that I wanted to kill them to keep the treasure for myself?

Maybe...

Both.

Luke didn't comfort the two; he simply released their plastic handcuffs and asked, "Is there anyone else on the yacht?"

Lilith, rubbing her wrists, looked at Luke with her big blue eyes, somewhat complicated, "I don't know, I only saw Elsa Marin with the tattooed man."

Luke said, "Stay here, don't move around. There might be others on the yacht, I need to do a search."

Hearing there might be other criminals, Lilith grabbed Luke's shoulder, concerned, "Be careful."

The girl with glasses also picked up her handgun again, "We'll protect ourselves."

Luke smiled, saying nothing, and first proceeded to search the lower level of the yacht.

The girl with glasses looked at Lilith, "Lilith, what should we do now?"

Lilith, looking at the bodies on the ground, took a deep breath, "Luke saved us, we should thank him."

The girl with glasses nodded, "You're right, I was so scared just now, I forgot to thank him."

Lilith gazed toward the bridge, "Is the maritime satellite phone in the bridge?"

"Yes."

"Report to the police, explain the situation here and our location clearly."

"Okay." The girl with glasses' eyes lit up, and she hurried into the bridge, picking up the maritime satellite phone and pressing the switch, only to find no response. After a careful check, her face changed dramatically, "Lilith, the maritime satellite phone is broken."

Lilith also hurried into the bridge, "How could it be broken?"

"Could it have been Elsa Marin?" The girl with glasses clenched her teeth, "That wicked woman not only brought the tattooed man onto the yacht while we were moving the treasure, she also took the opportunity to sabotage."

Lilith asked, "Can you fix it?"

"I'm not sure."

Lilith suddenly felt an inexplicable fear and deep sense of powerlessness. This unnamed island was quite remote, sparsely populated, it would soon be dark, and there were no other ships around. With the maritime satellite phone broken, they were temporarily cut off from the outside world.

...

Luke entered the lower level of the yacht, searched each room, and found some equipment from Elsa Marin's room. He guessed it was likely brought aboard by the tattooed man.

However, he found no other criminals.

Luke ascended to the deck again, Lilith and the girl with glasses had calmed down from their earlier panic, though their expressions were still peculiar.

Luke asked, "Did you call the police?"

The girl with glasses sighed, "The maritime satellite phone is broken, we can't call the police."

Lilith suggested, "Should we head back to Saint Thomas Island to report this?"

"That's possible, but there are two problems to solve first." Luke pointed to the three bodies on the ground, "Saint Thomas Island is over a hundred nautical miles from here, are you planning to take these three bodies back with us?"

Lilith shook her head, "No, I don't want to be with these bodies. Not even for a minute."

The girl with glasses agreed, "Me neither.

If we encounter others on the way, it could lead to misunderstandings, which is not a good idea."

Luke continued, "We also have a box of gold bars and six boxes of silver bars left in the cave.

Cleaning up the bodies and then returning to Saint Thomas Island would take at least six or seven hours.

After reporting to the police, they might hold us, and when we'll be able to return to this island is uncertain. Who knows if the treasure in the cave will still be there."

Lilith asked, "Then what do you suggest?"

Luke said, "First, we move the bodies to the shore, rest for the night, and then transport the remaining treasure from the cave tomorrow; then return to Saint Thomas Island to report this to the police.

That's what I think."

Lilith said, "Elsa Marin must have contacted her accomplices via the maritime satellite phone, and their ship is likely hiding somewhere near the island.

There might be a maritime satellite phone on that ship; we could find their ship and use their phone to report to the police."

Luke said, "Even if we find that gang's ship, it will be dark, making it harder to move the treasure.

If the police arrive early, and the remaining treasure is still in the cave.

Do you think that treasure will still belong to us?"

The rainforest at night is pitch black, and even Luke was in awe, not wanting to traverse it at night.

Lilith shook her head slightly, "I don't know..."

"I think the precondition for calling the police should be securing the treasure first, that way everything else can be better handled." Although Luke was a policeman, he didn't trust the local police's integrity.
