Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 142 Not Usually Like This_2

Luke gave a thumbs up, "Tastes great, but the filling falls out too easily and makes eating a messy business."

Xiao Hei asked, "When are you going to treat me to a meal?"

"When you catch me in the act." Luke took a sip of his Coke, thinking it was a mere $3.50 and here he was being asked for a return treat, what was he thinking?

"Ring, ring..." Xiao Hei's cellphone rang with a video call.

Xiao Hei wiped his hands and answered the phone, "Hey baby, have you eaten yet?

Yes, I'm at that Mexican restaurant we went to last time.

No no, I'm at work, eating with Detective Chief Luke, he really loves it here, his face is all cheesy."

"Hey, buddy, say hi to Julian."

Luke forced a smile, waved at the video, and kept his head down eating.

After a brief chat, Xiao Hei hung up, "She's great, but she's just too clingy."

Luke laughed, "She's started video-calling now?"

"Right, I have no idea who she picked it up from, isn't it creepy?" Xiao Hei sighed.

Luke suddenly had a feeling that he might actually win the thousand dollars he bet last time...

After their meal, they went to Theodore Cain's house for an investigation.

The two drove to the address listed in their files.

This was a typical Black community, and they parked their car in front of a dilapidated bungalow. Although Luke lived in a bungalow too, the community and house he stayed in were far better than this.

After getting out of the car, Luke surveyed the surroundings; there were quite a few loitering Black folks around.

Some Black folks were eyeing the car and Luke, and he stared back fiercely.

If anyone dared provoke him, Luke was ready to pull out his gun instantly—surviving in a Black community meant being tough.

Of course, Blacks weren't easily intimidated, unless you had the means to intimidate them.

Xiao Hei seemed much more relaxed; he was in his element here.

The two entered Theodore Cain's yard, where an old Toyota was parked in front of the garage, and there was a pile of rudimentary gym equipment by the wall, along with a broken inflatable doll.

Xiao Hei squinted his eyes, "Luke, have you ever used one of these?"

"It's too small for me." Luke walked to the door and knocked, "Knock knock."

"Who's out there?" A woman's voice came from inside.

"LAPD, neighbors have reported noise from your place."

"Fuck, which asshole got bored this time, don't they play poker at night?" a woman cursed loudly from inside.

The door was answered by a young Black woman, no more than twenty, wearing a tank top pajama, the two black halves were quite conspicuous.

Xiao Hei flashed a smile, taking the initiative, "Hi there, beautiful, is this Theodore Cain's house?"

"Yes, what's the matter?"

"We want to talk to him, and by the way, who are you to him?"

"I'm his girlfriend. Weren't you here about the noise? What do you want him for?"

Luke flashed his badge, "LAPD, we need to talk to him."

"He's not at home."

"Where is he?"

"I don't know. He lies as much as you cops, who knows where he hides?" The woman said, attempting to close the door.

Luke blocked the door, "What's your name?"

The Black chick smiled, "You trying to hit on me?"

"Stop the smiley face, what's your name?"

"You came looking for Theodore Cain, what's that got to do with me? Why should I tell you..."

Just then, a noise came from the back; Luke and Xiao Hei moved aside to check it out, discovering a man in a hoodie slipping out from the back.

Xiao Hei shouted, "LAPD, freeze!"

The mention made it worse; as soon as he said the word, the man in the hoodie took off running.

"Fuck!" Xiao Hei cursed, speeding after him.

Luke glanced at the Black chick and chased after him too.

The man in the hoodie knew the area well, not sticking to the main roads but twisting and turning ahead, even hopping into someone's yard, drawing a string of reproaches.

Luckily, Xiao Hei was familiar with the slum's setup and kept close behind.

The man just ran and posed no danger to himself, leaving Xiao Hei no reason to shoot and turning it into a chase.

After about half a street, Xiao Hei, being fitter, gradually caught up, grabbing the hoodie and pulling him down to the ground.

Xiao Hei, pulled back by inertia, instinctively pulled out his pistol from the holster, "LAPD, don't move!"

The man pulled down by his hoodie caught sight of the gun barrel and dared not resist, lying on the ground with his hands up, "Don't shoot, I haven't committed a crime, I'm not a bad guy!"

Xiao Hei examined him closely, "Aren't you Theodore Cain?"

"You've got the wrong guy, I'm not him."

"Then why were you at his house?" Xiao Hei blinked, seeming to understand and laughed, "You slept with his girlfriend?"

The man in the hoodie snapped, "Shut your mouth, that's my sister."

"Then why did you run?"

Xiao Hei suddenly realized, "Fuck, you were a diversion!"

Xiao Hei was frustrated, it was too late to go back now, but he decided to handcuff the man in the hoodie first.

"Why are you arresting me?" the man in the hoodie protested.

"Shut up, talk back again and I'll charge you with assaulting a police officer," Xiao Hei glowered at the man, feeling irked.

The man in the hoodie was quite young, only sixteen or seventeen, more boy than man.

The boy was intimidated by Xiao Hei and dared not resist.

Xiao Hei took out his phone to call Luke, but no one answered, making him anxious.
