Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 283: On the Scene_3

Luke and Jackson crossed the yard to the door and knocked, "Thud Thud."

"No one responded."

"Thud Thud." Continuing to knock.

Still no response.

"Mr. Sweeney, do you have the keys to the house?"

"No. Even if she would give keys to a stranger, she wouldn't give them to me."

"Your wife is not home, do you know where she went?"

"I don't know, she doesn't work, and if she doesn't want to be found by me, there's nothing I can do."

Unable to find Gelina Sweeney and not wanting to just wait foolishly, Luke asked, "Can we enter the house to check?"

"Are you asking me?"

"Of course, technically you are still married, and this is her house as well as yours."

"You're right, the bills are still paid by me, you can go in as long as you don't damage the lock.

Making her upset would be a small consolation.

But if there are any damages, then you'll need to compensate.

I don't want to deal with the landlord."

"We'll be careful." Luke had already observed that one of the windows of the house was open, so they could just enter through there and unlock the door from inside.

The police reconfirmed that there was no one inside, and Jackson jumped into the house to open the door.

Luke led the team to enter and search the house.

The house wasn't big, just one floor, three rooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchen. Luke walked around the house and noticed obvious issues.

Having inspected the interior, Luke walked out to the yard and saw Helson Sweeney standing in a corner of the yard smoking.

Luke cautioned, "Mr. Sweeney, perhaps it's best not to smoke here?"

"You just said this is also my house, why can't I smoke here?"

"We haven't found the suspect vehicle nor your wife, and if it turns out she is connected with the criminal case, everything here might become evidence, including your cigarette butts."

"Sorry, I'll put the cigarette butt in my car.

What exactly is my wife involved in? Is it serious?"

"Yes."

"Has someone died?"

Luke nodded.

"That's terrible, did you find anything in the house?"

Luke did not answer, looking instead at where Helson Sweeney was standing, "Mr. Sweeney, could you stand elsewhere?"

"I understand not smoking, but now even where I stand is controlled, aren't you being a bit... inhumane.

I have nothing to do with your investigation, just assisting you."

"You're right. I appreciate your cooperation.

I'm asking you to move because I've found something."

Helson Sweeney looked down at his feet, "What is it? I don't see anything."

Luke approached to observe the ground, "Look carefully, the color of the soil under your feet is different from the surrounding soil."

Helson Sweeney moved aside, whispering, "Is there a problem with that?"

"We'll know once we dig. Of course, this is your house, so we need your permission first. You won't refuse, right?"

"Uh… just as long as you return it to how it was."

"No problem." Luke agreed, then signaled, "Guys, go get the shovels from the car, it's time to dig."

Little Black and Jackson, acting as the muscle, started digging in the yard.

The police presence piqued the curiosity of the neighborhood residents. Patrol officers were responsible for keeping the area secure to prevent residents from crowding too close.

By this time, Helson Sweeney had lost his earlier composure, "Captain Li, what do you think is down there?"

"What do you think? Isn't this the house you rent?"

"To be precise, it's rented by my wife, I just paid the bills."

"You were just standing on top of it."

"Yes, what a coincidence. I really didn't notice the difference in the soil color, you have great observational skills."

"That's what I rely on for my living. You seem a bit nervous?"

"Yes, I seldom deal with the police." Helson Sweeney took a deep breath,

"I'll call Gelina again about this, she should know about it. It's trouble she's caused, I shouldn't have to bear it."

Helson Sweeney took out his cell phone, dialed again, then slightly shook his head in disappointment, "Still no answer.

Damn, she doesn't even have a job, where on earth could she be?"

Luke said nothing, just looked towards the digging site.

After a while, Little Black shouted, "Hey, I think I hit something."

Jackson stabbed with his shovel a few times, "Me too."

Luke cautioned, "Be careful, don't damage the evidence."

Under the digging of Little Black and Jackson, a black bag appeared in the pit, very sturdy, "Rookie, open it and see."

"Why don't you open it?"

"Because you're the rookie."

Jackson, somewhat helplessly, put on disposable gloves and carefully opened the black bag, a strong, putrid smell rushing out,

"Fuck! It's suffocating me." Little Black climbed out of the pit.

Jackson, holding his nose, said breathlessly, "Captain, there's a body in the bag."

"A head?"

"No, another headless female corpse."

"That's not good news."

Luke walked over to inspect. The body in the bag had been severed at the neck and, judging by the body's features, was likely female. The body had decayed, but due to the good seal of the bag, there wasn't much impact on the surrounding environment.

Luke felt somewhat despondent, they had originally been investigating the murder case of Novina Jones, thinking they would find Novina Jones' head, but instead, they found another headless female corpse.

Luke looked towards Helson Sweeney, "Mr. Sweeney, how long have you rented this house?"

"About two months."

"Why is there a body buried in the yard?"

"I don't know, this house was lived in by my wife, we've been separated, as you know.

This matter has nothing to do with me, you should ask her." Helson Sweeney stepped back two steps, showing a panicked expression.

"I understand what you mean, but you two aren't divorced yet, you're still husband and wife, and the rent is paid by you, technically you're still responsible for this house." Luke gestured,

"Come on, you should come take a look, it might be someone you know."
