Jackson frowned upon seeing the license plate, "It's John.
Captain, did he come here following your investigation direction?"
"Maybe." Luke chuckled, not really caring about it, as cases of this nature were no different from a diversion to him.
After all, it's all the same pay, so what's wrong with doing some light work occasionally?
No sooner had Luke and Jackson entered the yard than the front door opened, and John and his partner stepped out.
John seemed a bit awkward, "Hi, we meet again."
Jackson shook his head, "John, you really have a strong competitive spirit."
"I'll take that as a compliment. Guys, see you later.
By the way, I'm sure to win." John waved his hand and got into the car with his partner.
Jackson spread his hands, "Captain, this guy is serious."
Even Luke couldn't help but smile wryly, that old rookie John is really... adorable.
But, he does like to put adorable people in their place.
"Jackson, we have to get serious now."
"Yes, sir."
...
"Knock, knock..."
Jackson knocked on the door.
Soon, an annoyed male voice came from inside, "I've already told you everything I know, can you please not bother me anymore."
The door opened, and the curly-haired Jamie Robinson looked at Luke and Jackson, "New faces again, but I remember you, you were here yesterday.
Are you ever going to give it a rest?"
"Mr. Robinson, I'm Luke Lee, captain of the Robbery and Murder Department Squad One, and I'd like to have a word with you."
"Sigh... there's nothing left to talk about.
I've already agreed not to file a complaint against you guys, so stop bothering me, alright? Can I just play my games in peace?"
Jackson said, "We're here to investigate a false alarm."
"Well then go investigate! Why are you at my house?"
"We would like to ask you a few questions, I think you too want the person who made the false alarm caught as soon as possible."
"Of course I do, but I don't know anything.
Otherwise, I wouldn't have been stunned like an animal by you guys, I still remember that feeling.
If it weren't for that old officer John begging me, I would have filed that complaint."
Jackson was taken aback, "What did John tell you?"
"You should ask him." Jamie Robinson said, about to close the door.
Luke blocked the door, "Mr. Robinson, I know you have a misunderstanding about the police, and we are here to clear that up.
Avoiding us won't solve the problem.
If you keep us out, next time it might be the FBI knocking."
Jamie Robinson said discontentedly, "Are you trying to scare me?"
"No, to my knowledge, there have been at least five false alarm incidents just yesterday. Do you understand the seriousness of this matter?
If the case remains unsolved, it could potentially be linked to terrorism and the FBI will certainly step in.
Would you prefer to talk to the FBI?
They are not as friendly as the Los Angeles Police Department.
And they won't use stun guns."
"Are you comparing who's worse?
Come in then, you have ten minutes." Jamie Robinson said, heading inside.
Jackson whispered, "Captain, were there five false alarm incidents in Los Angeles yesterday? I wasn't aware."
Luke whispered back, "I never said they were limited to Los Angeles."
The two entered the house, and Luke once again surveyed the room's environment, which was much the same as yesterday's.
Jamie Robinson urged, "Ask whatever questions you have quickly, I've started timing you.
Once time's up, either you leave, or I call my lawyer."
Luke said, "Mr. Robinson, first off, I'd like to apologize for what happened yesterday.
I hope you can understand, under those circumstances, we had no better options."
Jamie Robinson complained, "According to you, getting stunned by a Taser was the best option?"
"Although you might not like the answer, it indeed was."
"Maybe you're right, but it just rubs me the wrong way, and I'm certainly not thankful to someone who Tasered me."
Luke said, "I can understand how you feel, but the one who really wants to harm you is the person who made the false alarm. If we had been using real guns then, you might have been killed by mistake.
That might even be the true intent of the person making false alarms.
That person might be trying to harm you, and every day they're not caught is another day you spend in danger.
Do you intend to keep living in fear?"
Jamie Robinson's face shifted slightly, "Maybe it's just a misunderstanding, they might not be targeting me."
"You said it yourself - maybe. Are you going to entrust your safety to someone else's goodwill? If they were really that benevolent, they wouldn't make a false alarm in the first place."
Jamie Robinson seemed convinced, "OK, ask whatever you want."
Luke asked, "Have you offended anyone recently?"
"No."
"Has anyone been making harassing phone calls to you?"
"No,"
"Harassing letters or other forms of harassment?"
"None at all."
"Have you invited anyone over to your house recently?"
"No."
"I'm going to play a recording. Listen carefully," Luke took out a voice recorder and played the emergency call.
["Hello, this is 911 emergency services."
"I want to report an emergency, I'm super scared right now..."]
Throughout the playback, Luke observed Jamie Robinson's expressions.
After listening, Jamie Robinson swallowed hard, "Is this... the false alarm call that framed me yesterday?"
"Yes."
"Need to listen to it again?"
"No need."
"Do you know the person who made the call?"
"I don't."
Luke faintly discerned signs of lying from the other man's face and tested again, "Since the person who made the false alarm knows your home address, it's very likely someone you know. Listen to it one more time."
Luke played the recording again,
"Do you recognize her?"
Jamie Robinson was silent for a moment, then shook his head, "I truly don't recognize her."
Lying.
"The caller identified herself as Suri Shamari. Does that name ring a bell?"
"No."
Lying.
Luke had mostly determined that Jamie Robinson was hiding something; he should have recognized the voice of the person making the false alarm.
If that person used his home address to harm him, why would he protect them?
"Have there been any false alarms in your area before?"
"No," Jamie Robinson answered, then glanced at his watch, "Captain Luke, it's been ten minutes. I've told you everything I know.
Please leave."
Jamie Robinson stood up to see his guests out.
Luke stood up and left the house with Jackson.
Once in the car, Jackson said, "I guess John didn't find any valuable clues either. Captain, where shall we go to investigate now?"
"First, let's switch cars."
"Why? Who do you want to follow?"
Luke said, "Jamie Robinson lied."
"How do you know?"
"After he listened to the recording, his entire demeanor changed. I suspect he recognized the identity of the caller."
"If he knows the caller, why not say so?"
...
Ten o'clock at night.
House number 105, Prandle community, the door slowly opened.
Jamie Robinson walked out of his house, looked around, then went into his garage and drove out in a white Honda.
The car started out slowly but gradually sped up after leaving the community.
Luke and Jackson followed behind the Honda.
Besides their car, there were two other cars taking turns tailing the target.
Jackson said, "Captain, you were right; this guy is up to something.
Where do you think he's headed?"
"I don't know, but it's possible he's going to the caller's place. After all, some things can't be communicated well over the phone; face-to-face is safer."
Jackson said, "Isn't he afraid of being followed by the police?"
Luke laughed, "This is just a false alarm case, not a homicide. It's not as complicated as you think. Relax a little."
Over the radio, Black's voice came through, "Captain, the target vehicle has entered the cell tower location area of the emergency call.
The target is very likely going to meet the person who made the false alarm."
"Received. Continue following."
Jackson laughed, "Captain, I can't wait to see John's face."
Luke said, "Didn't you forget something?"
"What?"
"The bet."
"You're right. Now that we're holding the winning cards, what do you think should be the stake?"
"The loser runs naked on the street. How about that?"
"Captain, you're evil.
I like it!"
"Heh heh..."
Both men let out a wicked laugh.
