Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 332: Doubts Galore

Fuan Cruise was a man not short of money, as he directly raised the commission to $200,000.

However, the money was not so easy to get. One had to not only find out who wrote the threatening letters but also ensure the security of the engagement ceremony, and at the same time, investigate Chanel Karl's situation.

It could be simply understood that $50,000 was the fee for services, and each completed task would earn an additional $50,000.

Luke had to complete three tasks to earn a commission of $200,000, from which the Pinkerton Detective Agency would take a thirty percent cut, leaving Luke with the remaining seventy percent, or $140,000 (before taxes).

This commission was far more than what Luke had earned from his lottery system fund.

However, it was Luke's first time accepting a commission as a detective, which caused him a bit of stress.

He wasn't investigating as a police officer now, and this was not a criminal case, so the approach to investigation had also changed.

Firstly, he couldn't just make records with involved individuals as a police officer would; he needed a new identity to communicate with others in a reasonable manner.

After pondering, Luke decided to stay at the manor as a security consultant before the start of the engagement ceremony, which would make it easier to communicate with others and conduct investigations secretly.

Inside a guest room on the first floor of the Cruise Manor.

Luke opened the window on the south side and smiled at Orty, who was sitting on the couch, "This room is nice, are you sure you don't want to stay?"

Orty replied, "As a beauty like me suddenly appearing in the manor is too conspicuous, it's better for you to stay by yourself.

I can be more useful outside, running errands for you, like checking up on Chanel Karl's information."

"That works." Luke was here to make money, and flirting was just a bonus, he asked, "When are you planning to leave?"

"I'll go once you're settled in."

"I'll see you out."

Luke left the room and walked Orty to the parking lot.

Orty jiggled the keys to the Mercedes, "Then your big baby here, I'll take it."

"Don't forget to pick me up."

Orty got into the driver's seat, resting her left hand on the window, and curiously asked, "What if I speed in it, would the police pull me over?"

"You can try it.

But, it's best I don't hear about it; otherwise, I can't promise I won't spank you."

Orty pouted, "I won't give you that perverse opportunity."

Luke patted the Mercedes, "Then take good care of it."

"I plan to carry it back to Los Angeles, what do you think?"

"Maybe it prefers a hug."

"Thanks for the tip." Orty hit the accelerator, and the car slowly started.

"You're welcome." Luke waved at the car, ready to stroll around the nearby farm and ponder over this commission.

The threatening letters, the security of the engagement ceremony, the uncertainties surrounding Chanel Karl.

There was definitely a connection among the three; Luke now needed to find an entry point.

"Clip-clop..." The sound of hooves approached.

Luke turned his head to see Cowboy Tom riding over. "Mr. Lee, I heard from Mr. Cruise that you wanted to learn to ride horses?"

During the meal earlier, Luke indeed mentioned horse riding to Fuan Cruise, but it was just a casual comment. However, since the opportunity was here, why not try it?

If he had gone to a special equestrian center, it would have cost a considerable amount, and Luke might not have had the time.

Under Tom's guidance, Luke came to the area next to the horse stable, which was very clean inside with several individual stalls. Outside the stable, a wooden fence enclosed an area where a few horses leisurely strolled about.

Tom pointed towards the south side of the area, "Mr. Lee, how about that horse?"

Following Tom's direction, Luke saw a tall black horse with smooth fur and strong limbs, shining like black satin under the sunlight.

"I like it. What's its name?"

"Grace."

Luke pointed at the robust black horse, "It's a mare?"

Tom laughed, "Mr. Lee, come a bit closer." Tom pointed at another brown pony nearby, "I was talking about this one."

"Haha… that black fellow completely blocked it." Luke laughed awkwardly.

"I understand you, but for your first time riding, Grace is more suitable for you."

"OK, I'll choose her then."

Tom hopped over into the arena, saddled the brown pony, and led it out from the area, patting its mane, "Come on aboard, Grace is very gentle, perfect for beginners."

"Is there anything I need to be careful about?" Luke, riding for the first time, didn't want to injure himself.

"Stand firm on the stirrups, hold tight to the reins, pull the inside rein to turn, and don't sit too hard."

"Sounds not too difficult." Luke took a deep breath, grabbed the saddle, stepped on the stirrup, and mounted the horse.

"I will guide you by holding the reins for a bit; it might feel bumpy at the start, just keep your back straight and go with the horse's rhythm." Tom walked while guiding Luke.

Luke felt quite good sitting on the saddle, enjoying a better view, and looking at the lush greenery, feeling quite the knightly vibe.

Tom accelerated gradually, eventually reaching a jogging pace, and Luke, riding the horse, felt increasingly bumpy, to the point where even his butt started hurting.
